This was my most fervent message to my son when he turned to me for sartorial advice.

Wow, I can't believe it's been almost ten years since I've posted here.

Like many people, I became extremely disillusioned with Sherlock after the train wreck that was "The Final Problem." Writing meta, which had been my niche in this fandom, just seemed like a complete waste of time. How can I take this show and the characters seriously anymore when the writers themselves don't seem to, when they seem to be going out of their way not just to destroy their own story but to mock the fandom's love for it in the process. (This excellent meta here expresses pretty well how futile it seemed at the time.)

That's how it felt at the time, and it hurt too much to engage with the show anymore. Not to mention, I felt like the fandom itself changed once TJLC became the dominant discourse, whether you were for it or against it (and I actually supported). Most of the meta I saw was now all about subtext and convoluted plot points, which although I found interesting and even persuasive, was not the kind of thing I enjoyed writing. The show became more like a puzzle rather than the character-driven story it had seemed to be in S1 and S2, which in my present opinion led to its ultimate downfall. Since my metas are focused character analysis, I felt like I didn't have much to contribute even in S3, let alone after S4.

But...somehow I've been called back here, and I realize that I still have things to say: about what I still love about this show (which has never changed) and where I felt like it went wrong; the wonderful experience I had in this fandom in the post-Reichenbach era (between S2 and S3), and how that changed; maybe even about the characters themselves, especially John Watson, and why I think his characterization in S3 was a mistake (which then led to the mess in S4, which I've literally deleted from my mind so probably won't actually comment on). More than that though, I feel like I have something deeper to say, about how my love for this show and my participation in this fandom transformed me; about how Sherlock is a tragedy that taught me something crucial about love, life, and art; about how the connection between Sherlock and John in S1/S2, which drew so many of us to the show in the first place, is still something beautiful, no matter what happened later.

I don't know if anyone is still reading this. I don't know if anyone is still left who remembers those wonderful early days. I don't know even know if this is the right place to post these things anymore, or when I'm going to actually write these.

But I do know that I need to, so that I can work through my own still unresolved feelings about this show, because the love I still have for this show, for the version of Sherlock and John that inspired me to live more heroically, for the fandom of that era and all of our vulnerable discussions about love and friendship, for all the thoughtful meta and heartfelt fanfiction we crafted - that was all real, and it deserves to be remembered. It deserves a resolution beyond disillusioned abandonment, a recognition beyond nostalgic disappointment.

If there's anyone still here who also feels what I'm saying, please do let me know. I will write these things no matter what, but it's always encouraging to know that someone else relates.

Would love to see what you have to share! @sherlockcharacteranalysis and to have someone who loves the original (s1-2) source material as much as those of us who came back, came in, stuck around (i know there are many of each group)! S3-4 are heartbreaking to me, and like you i can hardly interact with or view s4 again without pain >.<. S3 convinced me that what I saw in s1-2 was so damn real it hurts to breathe, and I found fandom (albeit a bit late to the party) as a result. Which i will be forever grateful for, this group is awesome!

The wisdom of hindsight on direct experience...

As proposed by @fluffbruary, I have made a Valentine's rec list. Now that I've read through it, It seems to have become more of a love letter...

First of all, I want to thank someone special in the Sherlock fandom - the remarkably talented podficcer extraordinaire @podfixx There isn't a day that goes by without that comforting voice weaving its way to my heart and core. Picking a favourite is almost impossible, because every single one is a gem. But, there is one I will promote a little extra on this romantic day.

Summary: This is the story of a young consulting detective who wants nothing to do with marriage and an army doctor who wants to find true love. It's 2020 post-Brexit England and the British government is encouraging arranged marriages. Candidates meet through state-run agencies and date in hopes of finding love (and tax benefits). Sherlock doesn't need or want a spouse, at least not until John Watson shows up. Hesitant to give in to his more carnal urges because of the way they derail his mind, how will Sherlock progress toward the more intimate aspects of a relationship? The answer lies in a very special wedding gift.

5 years ago today I started posting my first Sherlock fic on AO3. I’d spent years on it, and it had got long and prickly, so my hopes for it were modest. 30 or 50 readers would be a great success, I thought, and I still think that. The first 30-50 readers and their comments poured out generous encouragement and rowdy-shouty interaction. And they buttonholed their friends and made them do the same. 

So I kept writing. If you watered the flowerbeds of Drawn to Stars, early or late–thank you. You midwifed every story that followed, whether in the DtS series or not.

Next in the series: Inferno, co-written with 7PercentSolution. Sherlock and John are lured into a case in Italy involving Roberto Zanardi, the Mafia, and stolen art. A lot will get resolved that needed to be resolved. The case fic, the brainchild of @7-percent, is riveting, and you can definitely read it without knowing the series.

Hey all! Today’s a different kind of Fic Rec Sunday! I was recently asked to send some love to the amazing @podfixx, and of course I said yes! And I’ve decided to do it in one of my fave ways for content creators: promoting their work!! While I’ve never listened to podfics (it’s not really my thing) I know that Podfixx is a staple of the Sherlock podfic community and deserves all the love for their hard work, professionalism, and dedication.

I want to share my own happy experience with Podfixx: they are the reason I have chapter counts on my fic recs now, if you guys didn’t know. They asked me a few years ago if I could add Chapter counts to fics, because [and this isn’t verbatim, but it’s how I interpreted what they told me… can’t find the message now, it was so long ago] adding chapters actually helps podficcers in deciding which fics to pick next to read, or how to break up a LONG 1 Chapter fic, and helps them plan out their podfic schedule. First of all, I was FLOORED that someone as amazing as Podfixx even read my fic lists (I’m always shocked when anyone takes vested interest in anything I do), but that, at the time, they used them to help pick fics. And since then, I’ve always put chapter counts on all my fics.

So you guys should go and give them a listen!:) This list is OBVIOUSLY not comprehensive, and not everything they’ve done, but PLEASE check out their “Podfixx” tag for everything they’ve read (including Good Omens and Jeeves and Wooster!), and give them some love!!

Y'all, a repost is when you copy/download the work and create a new post using the work making it seem as if it's yours. A reblog is you using a site provided feature to share the creator's post directly from the creator so that it's still credited to them and they still get all of the traction/notes from the work.

And I feel like that, right there, explains so much about how the site has changed in the last few months.

People now think reblogging is an unusual behaviour, rather than a default.

Tumblr newbies, please, for the love of baby Jesus, reblog the posts you like. That is the whole reason the site exists - for you to collect all your shiny fandom objects in a single space. Which you can organize to your heart's content. Or not organize at all, if that's your jam.

Liking does absolutely nothing. There is no algorithm like on IG that will use likes to throw content at people. If you don’t reblog, then no one who doesn’t follow that person (or happen to find it in the tags) will see that post.
