I’m looking for a long Johnlock fic I read around 2022. It was still updating at the time (I had to wait months for new chapters), and I think it had around 50+ chapters(?) . It’s a US high school au, set in a small Southern/rural town.

What I remember:

Sherlock moves from another state and is the new kid.

John plays American football and starts out dating a cheerleader.

There’s a bonfire after a football game where Sherlock wears short shorts, and everyone notices.

John and Sherlock spend time driving a tractor together (John’s family’s farm? ).

Sherlock already knows he’s gay; John takes much longer to figure himself out.

John’s mother is homophobic and disapproves of their relationship.

John’s father is supportive; at some point he uses a wheelchair, and I think John’s parents later divorce.

John has a younger sister.

After high school, John joins the military and later returns injured.

There’s a couple of 18+ scenes… Parents leave and they are alone at home (after John returns injured from the millitary…) 

Sherlock and John keep their canon names (Sherlock Holmes and John Watson).

The title may have been short (1–3 words), but I’m not confident about that.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I’d be incredibly grateful if someone recognizes it!

Chapter 6: An Invitation

After that strange encounter, life at Baker Street became a calm routine passing without much conversation, the occasional cup of tea shared, though he never seemed to drink much of it. He offered and accepted them as if it was a peace offering, a nicety, a way of communicating. A ritual. We would sit in silence, looking at our tea. Somehow, it never felt awkward though. There was a comfortable familiarity in it, as if we had known each other for many years and had reached this point of quiet companionship naturally over time. Sometimes, I would ask questions, and he would answer with very short responses. 
Not much was gleaned from our conversations. Occasionally, I would read the paper and tell him the highlights of what I had read. I did eventually remember to tell him the tale of my mysterious night visitor. On that occasion, he had been delighted, demanding every word be recounted in detail. He seemed to find my behaviour on the occasion outstanding. I, in turn, was horrified to learn the intruder was not his lawyer at all, but his older brother, Mycroft. Holmes, on the other hand, seemed to find the entire encounter very much to his liking. Apparently kicking his brother out raised me even further in his esteem somehow.

But there was still mystery despite our new comfortable routines. He wouldn't speak of his secret outings and I didn't want to pry. Mostly, he would go out as I was on my way to bed. 
I would be awake in the day sometimes with no sign of him just as he had predicted. 

Until one wintry, particularly gloomy day; when it had rained for a couple of days with no reprieve. The skies were dark, the rain had set in, and 
I was heavily ensconced in the prose of Oscar Wilde. A gentle throat clearing caught my attention and I raised my eyes to find him, leaning against the door frame, watching me. He was fully dressed – quite out of character for him during the day. Usually, if he ever surfaced, he would be in his satin robe and comfortable pyjamas. So, it was quite a surprise to find him in his dashing three piece suit, a top hat in his hand, a smirk on his lips as he watched me read. 

“Sorry. 
Have you been waiting for me?” I asked. 

“Have you anything important in your calendar today, 
Doctor Watson?” he asked. 

“I... No, I... was... 
planning a quiet day inside with the weather as it is”. 

“Well, come on, then, I have... a better idea.” 

“You're going outside? In the daytime?” I asked, shocked.


He smiled. He smiled at me. 

“I think I just might. 
I have an errand to run, and the weather seems quite perfect for it.”

 I frowned, looking out the window. “This? This is the perfect weather to go outside?” 

“For me it is, yes.” He grinned with delight. “Are you coming?” 

“You want me to come?!” 

“Yes.” He nodded. Enthusiastically in fact.

Well, I have to admit, I embarrassed myself by leaping up a little too eagerly and almost knocking over my tea cup. 
The thought of finally being invited to join him on his outing was far too enticing. I grabbed my coat, hat, and cane – which had been returned by the Inspector – and quickly followed. 

“You don’t need that,” he said, gesturing at my cane as he stepped out onto the street.

Without argument, I left the cane in the coat racks by the door and followed him out.

OKAY. So, below the cut I will be going into heavy spoilers. Above the cut I'm going to vague-post.

The TL;DR of this is: I didn't HATE it, I didn't LOVE it, and am unhappy with how the end was inevitably handled EVEN THOUGH I DO love the Epilogue and its implications, and I understand WHY they did it. My feelings are very VERY mixed (though on second rewatch I do like it a little more) and I'm now understanding that it's COMPLETELY because of how Aziracrow was inevitably handled. It's a PERSONAL feeling, and I don't fault ANYONE for liking the episode, at all.

I'm going to break this up above AND below the cut. Please note ALL of these are my PERSONAL preferences, and as the days post-finale move on, my feelings have changed a lot and I suspect they will continue to do so (like, when it first ended, I was VERY MAD and hated the Epilogue. Now I'm not, and I actually love the Epilogue now as I sit more and more on the implications of what happened):

NON-SPOILER POSITIVES

First and foremost: I am happy that we got an ending, especially in this day and age where everything gets cancelled before a finale. And we almost DIDN'T get it, thanks to You-Know-Who, but got it because of the Cast and Pratchetts wanting to finish it for the fans.

The episode was visually beautiful. I suspected it would be because Rachel's episode in Sherlock S4, T6T, was the best looking one too.

I loved the implication of "in every universe". That was actually really beautiful.

The first 30 minutes were really good and solid. I enjoyed it, minus a few things (which are spoilers).

Hands are held, I did want hand holding and I got it.

Seeing them together again did make me happy. I was worried they wouldn't be on screen together until the end.

The more I sit on it, the epilogue is actually really beautiful.

A second rewatch was needed to sway my feelings a bit more positively.

Canon relationship, arguably for infinity, which I do love.

NON-SPOILER NEGATIVES

I am sad, so VERY sad, that we will never see Michael and David in these roles ever again. I love their Aziracrow so SO much.

The episode suffered a LOT from the condensed runtime. You can tell it was patch-worked together the best that they could with a limited timeframe, like a first-draft story.

That said, think the script needed another few rewrites to make the story flow better. And possibly more time, like another year. I'm not sure if they were forced to film sooner than they were ready to, but it feels like a situation where they were.

Characters were introduced that inevitably don't serve the main plot other than to get Aziraphale back to Earth and to shit on him.

Some scenes were a waste of the runtime.

The Book of Life plot clearly had a bigger role in the 6 episodes, possibly as a mirror season to Season one, as this one is really REALLY chaotic.

There's a lot of plotholes, and a lot of things unaddressed.

Again, probably due to time constraints, Crowley and Azzie feel REALLY out of character, TO ME. But that's a personal feeling, not a fault of the actors.

The S3 Final Fifteen kind of makes all the previous 12 episodes feel moot and pointless.

OKAY, now for the spoilers:

My best hope is that it was a three card monte trick and God, being ineffable, decided to not destroy it all and say she did (as in that rather suspicious convo with Satan), but the timeline was far future….which could still work if they are continually reborn as a sequence of mortals? But tbh I am just not sure. And I don’t know what to think. I have no spoons left for a rewatch.

Yeah that contradiction bothers me so much. Adam thought the world was worth saving. I get that it got remade because a heaven and hell would never stop fighting, fine, but just it goes against the entire message of S1.

YEAAAHHHHH I clocked that RIGHT AWAY on the first watch and I just stared at the screen in disbelief before I even knew what was about to happen. I was SO MAD. It made all of Aziraphale's stress and anxiety pointless! She had opportune moments to talk to Azzie, I dunno. Days later I am still really upset about that fact, but am happy God ships it I guess?? LOL.

#we watched it as a group #and the consensus was more or less that it could have been better if it was 3-4 eps with proper reconciliation #and using Jesus for something more because as he was he was a bit of a macguffin #i'd be happier if they had the second universe created with full no-angels etc setup but OUR original A&C remained in the bookshop-garden#or indeed if they used the Book to rewrite whatever they could from memory similar to how Adam recreated the bookshop in S1#mirror or brackets situation but also a sign that they learned something from the kid#and could have made some remark about learning from the little Antichrist as a reference to the original text#but it was still rather good and I'm very happy they managed to make it#just very sorry for all of us fans for the Situation and Circumstances

There's a lot of other things that they could have done with the finale's Final 15.

Nearly a week later, I love the end after the big bang, with Asa and Anthony. It's really sweet and it does make me happy and I am okay with that Epilogue (especially with the implications of it). But I still cry and get frustrated at the Bookshop scene before it, and have a hard time seeing OUR Aziracrow because the decision feels so out of left field for Crowley, because it's clear to me that there was a way to have Asa and Anthony there AND Aziracrow still alive as they ARE.

BUT. I do see Crowley in Anthony, especially when he says "I have my universe, and I have you, I have everything I've ever wanted".

But yeah, my biggest qualm with it now IS the fact that S1 said "it's worth saving" and now in S3 it's worth destroying?
