You must be asking because of my recent post about John and Harry possibly being twins. I really haven’t delved into this aspect about John’s character, namely because a lot of my theories and thoughts have already been covered by people more familiar with bisexuality than I ever will be. Please note I am no expert and I would GREATLY appreciate anyone who can chime in on this who have experience. Here are a few that I really like and it helped me understand sexuality in general:

There are SO many more I could link to, but these are right to the point and helps you understand the world John Watson grew up in.

So what are my views, then? Well, given that I don’t know how old you are (though your blog says you are a teenager, so I’m guessing you were born in the 00′s), as a child of the 80′s myself I can attest to the world being a VERY different place. It was not as open and progressive as it appears to be now towards the LGBT+ community, nor was bisexuality nor asexuality considered a “real thing”. I’m not sure about the UK military, but the military in US and Canada, up until recently, had a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, and I believe if they found out you were gay, you were either not accepted or discharged (don’t quote me, I’m not 100% certain).

It has only been recently that archaic sodomy laws have been abolished in the UK, and gay marriage just became legal there only in 2014. 

So, with what I know about the generation John grew up in, coming out would have been a terribly hard thing to do. I imagine John lived in a very catholic or christian family, given that he is reading the Bible at Christmas in ASiB, possibly a military family. I have a feeling that their parents were very homophobic, and possibly his father was a military man. 

I think he and Harry are twins, and as such were possibly best friends; she possibly came out to John first and confided in him, and John – who confused why he liked men and women equally – warned her to not come out to their parents. Cue Harry spilling the beans about herself to their parents when she met a woman she wanted to live with, them disowning her, and a tonne of pressure was put onto John to “be a man” and “thank god our son isn’t (insert derogatory slur here)”. Harry becomes a drinker, John joins the RAMC because he wanted to be a doctor but couldn’t afford it so joined the military to offset the costs, Harry doesn’t approve of John going off to get himself killed / hiding who he is, and their rift starts officially when he left. 

Because he saw what coming out did to his sister, he is insistent that, since he can “have a choice” (not really, but just for argument’s sake), he chooses women because he desires to fit into a world that made him different.

Possibly he also finds “comfort” in the military, meets a few men, gains a danger addiction.

I’m sure there’s way more to it than that, somewhere along the way John gets blamed for things and he gets lied to a lot, which makes him untrusting of others and closed off from the world. Dislikes interacting with his sister because he sees himself in her far too much.

Anyway, like I said, I’m not an expert at all, and I please ask people my age or older to chime in with their thoughts about John’s family life and their experiences. 

Just know that given who John is at the beginning of the series, that he only is still in contact with Harry occasionally (plus there’s a deleted scene in TSo3′s script that states John’s mother is dead as well), I really don’t think he had a peaches and cream immediate family life at all. I think it was wrought with a lot of bigotry, forced misogyny, and forced heteronormativity. It’s fine if you headcanon his childhood as a happy one, but given how depressed and alone John feels in ASiP, I don’t think it was. 

Which still bothers me because if this is the case and Mary is supposedly an orphan, WHO THE HELL ARE ALL THOSE PEOPLE AT THEIR WEDDING??

I’m 40, and I identify as bisexual, although I spent my first 35 years identifying as straight. 

“Bisexual” can be a scary label, because both straight AND gay people can be extremely biphobic. 

What if the reason John and Harry “don’t get on” is that she is biphobic? 

Perhaps he came out to her first, figuring that it’d be a safe first step, and she mocked / denied that he could be anything but gay. That might explain a lot, about how (a) he is still closeted and (b) he’s so vociferous about “NOT [being] GAY.” 

(Also occurred to me (and the source of a wisp of the first 2,442 words of a fic that I don’t know if I’ll EVER actually finish), what if CLARA is a John-mirror, and she’s bisexual, too, and THAT’S what happened to Harry & Clara’s marriage?)

You would think because my family doesn’t have a problem with it…. But I was in denial about my own sexuality for so long, I’m afraid my sister would think I wasn’t really accepting of hers either. My sister has had girlfriends; she was in love with her best friend in high school. I didn’t admit my feelings for women until was already in a relationship with the man who would be my husband. So I spent a lot of time thinking that I wasn’t bi “enough”, that I didn’t “deserve” to call myself queer. I feel better about this now but it’s still an issue with coming out to people, gay or straight, I’m never sure they’re going to believe me.

That description of John’s family life is on point with everything we know about John’s complex character so far. I always thought that was the reason for him being closeted, but @inevitably-johnlocked just explained it beautifully and in-depth. Also, @justlookfrightened‘s testimonial reminded me that ‘Thatcher’ is one of the clue words for S4!

For those unaware, a Lavender Marriage is "a male–female mixed-orientation marriage undertaken as a marriage of convenience to conceal the socially stigmatized sexual orientation of one or both partners. [SOURCE]

That said, I honestly would like to think that it is, for John anyway. I'm not SUPER familiar with the original canon (one of these days I'm going to read the canon hardcover books a Lovely sent me in the mail YEARS ago, LOL), but if I recall what people have mentioned in meta correctly, Watson BARELY mentions Mary at all in the stories, and she altogether gets forgotten about. And, again, if I recall correctly, those stories were written around the same time ACD's good friend Oscar Wilde was on trial and his books were used against him, so, like it's not hard to see a reason Watson was suddenly married.

I have a few! Purple, blue and teal are my faves. My hair is purple and blue, I love it so much :D

3. First fandom you were in?

Oooo this is a tough one... I've been in fandom spaces as long as I can remember, but the one I was first ACTIVE in was Sonic the Hedgehog SatAM. I was a prolific fic writer for the series WAY BEFORE even FFNet even existed. I don't think the stories even exist online anymore (the website that they were hosted on, without warning, wiped everyone who was hosted on it when they got bought out) though I do still have the original copies of the word docs. They're TERRIBLY written (I wrote them when I was around 12) but I love them for the fact that they were my first foray into fanfiction. After that, subsequently, I was in the Darkwing Duck fandom, which I rejoined again a few years after and quietly departed when TMNT 2012 came out, and then Sherlock took over my brain space and I quietly left TMNT. Sherlock is the longest fandom I've been active in and the only one I've ever been "a voice" for (for lack of a better word I can't think of at the moment, LOL). Right now I'm not AS deep into Sherlock as I once was, but I still enjoy the fandom itself which is why I keep running this blog LOL.

I just recall that I should’ve asked you about a fic ages ago. At one point I was convinced it was also podficced by the extraordinary Podfixx, but alas.

The gist of the fic is that John and Sherlock go undercover in a club (BDSM?) where the detective is tied up in intricate patterns by John. They’re not a couple beforehand but of course sparks fly eventually.

That’s all I have for you, I’m afraid. Can’t remember the author either.
