I think a lot about the architecture ideas drawn by Étienne-Louis Boullée
They're sketches from the 1780s and they look like the end of the fucking universe
They’re quite lovely. I’d like to live in the third one.

I miss my friends—the ones that I loved but lost touch with because of distance, busyness, and life.
I hope they know I think about them from time to time. That I want them to find happiness. And that above all—I’m always wishing for their best.

I'm just saying, if you're going to worldbuild magic being a "raw, primal force, akin to and interweaving with nature itself" you gotta explain to me why animals don't use it
I kind of like the idea, in this worldbuilding question, of it having more of an effect on a macro scale. Exaggerating geographical features, intensifying local weather conditions, that sort of thing.
I like the idea of an excess of magic exposure affecting living things like early attempts at genetic engineering. Y’know, back when they’d just blast something with a bunch of radiation, and see if it developed any useful mutations? Animal experiments with that tech were rarely, if ever, successful. Growing an extra leg out of your back doesn’t actually help you be a better goat.
Plants were much better off. Growing an extra branch may not be especially useful, but it’s much less harmful than the extra leg is for the goat. Maybe the tree gets lucky and it lets it access more sunlight. I envision magic hotspots in the setting above would have exaggerated, twisted versions of plants from the surrounding environment. Maybe some unique animals around as well, but fewer near the epicenter as the stacking mutations result in poorer and poorer outcomes.
Is it possible to be pro-women's right to toplessness and still be sexually attracted to boobs?
Okay, short answer: yes.
Long answer, you’re asking me if two totally unrelated things can coexist just because they involve the same body part.
Yes, my friend, you can respect the autonomy of half the human population to exist in public spaces with the same body parts exposed as the other half. That respect shouldn’t be based on the presence or absence of sexual attraction to the body part in question. That’s a whole separate thing from respecting others’ rights to dress freely in public.
For example, some people are attracted to feet. That does not mean we legislate sandals out of existence. It means we expect those who are attracted to feet not to sexually harass others in public.
The same applies to chests with breasts, as it applies to chests without breasts.
It is not the responsibility of others to control your sexual impulses.
When someone blames sexual impulses on others, it’s almost always an excuse to legislate those others to an excessive standard not applied universally. That shifts the blame of sexual harassment away from the harasser and onto the victim. And that’s the exact mechanic that leads to excusing rape on the basis of clothes.
That’s the part that’s the problem.
Frankly, if you are sexually attracted to breasts, you need to get more in support of breast toplessness ASAP, because right now your sexuality is being used to justify victim blaming.
The same applies to
chests with breasts, as it applies
to chests without breasts.
Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
Is this not, genuinely, what the oft-cited Bible verse is kind of about? Someone came up to Jesus and said, “What can we do about women causing men to have sexual urges with their state of dress?”. And he replied, “If your right eye causes you to sin, you should PLUCK OUT YOUR EYE.”.
The lesson being, each of us is responsible for the actions we take. We are more than mere animals. If you see a topless woman and it causes you to desire some variety of sexual contact with the breasts in question…you can just…not do that. Or at least put a few other steps in between.
For the record, I don’t really consider myself a Christian nowadays. Still a fan of my man JC, but I never really got the impression that any of the adults in the churches I grew up in were reading the same book. That led to some disillusionment.
I’m also probably ace. I haven’t, like, tested it? But I also haven’t really wanted to. Breasts are nice to look at, but they haven’t ever made me want to…take action. So my thoughts on the matter may not be useful. An alcoholic and a teetotaler would have different levels of difficulty in abstention from drink.
Just took a real banger in New Pokemon Snap
Psyduck: UOOOOOOOOH?! I can feel the power overflowing! Ursaring! What is this?
Ursaring:
Japanese is an incredibly fun and rewarding language (if you’ve ever wanted to learn it for ANY reason, most importantly including the “silly” reasons) but the fearmongering and capitalist intervention involved in the language learning process have given it a reputation as an “impossible task” for English speakers, leading to confusion and dkn learners and weird pessimist attitudes about the whole thing. In this thread I will explain how to effectively learn and retain Japanese. This is a tried, tested and true method; probably 99% of all people who try to learn Japanese give up, but everyone I’ve met who has tried and stuck with this has been at or above N3-N4 after 6 months or less including me
You can teach yourself Japanese for free if you have a little free time every day and a computer
1. Drill yourself on hiragana and katakana. These are the phonetic building blocks of Japanese, think of them as equivalent to english letters. This site is a good resource in general. Once you have a solid grasp on this, DO NOT LINGER HERE; move to step 2. You will master kana later.
2. Download Anki. This is a flashcard service. They have a paid app if you’re willing to invest for it, but if not, they have a mobile website (create an account and sync it with your computer).
This is the deck you’re going to download. Import it to Anki and do this every day. I have learned the hard way (twice) that skipping this is bad. If you become overwhelmed, you can change the number of new cards and reviews by clicking the cog next to the name of the deck!
3. Cure Dolly (Youtube, grammar) + transcript. She has kind of a posh accent, you might want to turn subtitles on. Watch a few videos when you feel like it but most importantly set up 4 and 5 as soon as possible
4. Yomitan (must have) is a browser extension that functions as a pop-up dictionary. you need to install dictionaries for it to work. here are some dictionaries you can use with yomitan and explanations of what they do
5. READ. DO NOT LET YOURSELF GET STUCK BEFORE THIS STEP. JUST READ!!!! Most people who fail to learn Japanese do so because they are afraid of not being ready to move on, which is counterproductive. Just read. When you were a child did you spend years on vocab and grammar before reading? No I bet you did not. Pick something to read and learn what you don’t already know by reading in Japanese.
Jiten.moe has a list of novels and visual novels that you can read on your computer sorted by difficulty. So does jpdb. There’s also this document. There’s also this document. Hey look this website is cool too
For visual novels: download LunaHook. It “hooks” to your VN and allows you to use Yomitan on words you don’t know. Turn off the translation feature, it does nothing to help you learn
For literary texts: ttsu e-reader supports epub and htmlz files.
You can also learn Japanese by watching anime, but it’s a little more convoluted and requires a lot more patience.
For manga, utilize Mangatan, but I don’t recommend this right out the gate because when you’re first learning sentence structure you’ll want something with complete sentences.
Set your computer up for mining vocab before you start reading. Once you finish your kaishi deck, you can drill your mining cards (I didn’t do mine until after finishing kaishi because it was too much).
Most importantly: reading is going to be hard at first. It is going to piss you off. You need to muscle through with this because this is where the bulk of your learning will happen. After a while you will just feel like reading because you love reading! Try not to pick something too hard for your first read, but if you’re interested in the story you might be able to muscle through something a little tougher.
Remember to consult yomitan and cure dolly where needed, that’s what it’s there for. As you can see I am quite normal about the Japanese language, so if you have any other questions or need help with anything else feel free to shoot me an ask and I will get back to you promptly. Japanese is not your enemy and it is not impossible. It is your friend
I’ll have to give this a try.
Protestants are so fucking lame what do you mean the Pope threw a rave?
The Pope's surprise virtual sermon brought new meaning to having a "religious experience" at the rave.

i think the near-extinction of people making fun, deep and/or unique interactive text-based browser games, projects and stories is catastrophic to the internet. i'm talking pre-itch.io era, nothing against it.
there are a lot of fun ones listed here and here but for the most part, they were made years ago and are now a dying breed. i get why. there's no money in it. factoring in the cost of web hosting and servers, it probably costs money. it's just sad that it's a dying art form.
anyway, here's some of my favorite browser-based interactive projects and games, if you're into that kind of thing. 90% of them are on the lists that i linked above.
A Better World - create an alternate history timeline
Alter Ego - abandonware birth-to-death life simulator game

Murder Games - fight to the death simulator by Orteil
Cookie Clicker - different but felt weird not including it. by Orteil.
if you're ever thinking about making a niche project that only a select number of individuals will be nerdy enough to enjoy, keep in mind i've been playing some of these games off and on for 20~ years (Alter Ego, for example). quite literally a lifetime of replayability.
since this post blew up, i've been wanting to do an addition with all of the recommendations from the comments and tags. but there's a lot of them. some people might be crazy enough to sit down and seriously put them all in one post with descriptions. those people are honestly sick in the head.
anyway, here's all of the recommendations from the reblogs. not all of them are text-based, but it's a great mixture of styles. also don't forget the links in the second paragraph of the OP which will take you to FMHY where there are a bunch more games listed.

thank you to everyone who contributed and the creators. please be sure to show them some love where possible.
people replying to my "you can just say you have food poisoning americans always have food poisoning" comment on my thanksgiving excuses post with delighted agreement that they too have noticed americans constantly have food poisoning, but you have forgotten or have missed that we did an actual survey just a scant few months ago and the americans on this site reported in GREAT NUMBERS that we would continue eating at a restaurant that gave us diarrhea/vomiting something like 4-5 times (or forever), while almost everyone else in the world kept it to a solid once, or twice if they really weren;t sure. food poisoning is *genuinely* out of control in the usa, we have awful food safety at every level of the food production chain down to the actual people cooking food at home not understanding temperatures or washing their hands. it was a whole thing, it went on for weeks, and it branched off in multiple directions like "please use your dishwasher if you have one" and "what do you mean you cant tell what gave you food poisoning? oh it's because you're always getting food poisoning? wait what do you mean 'everything your mom/grandma cooks gives ou food poisoning so it doesnt matter'?" anyway yes there is a food safety crisis going on in this country and its getting worse lmao
one single incident of food poisoning can permanently disable you btw. its one of the primary ways people end up with narcolepsy, POTS, MCAS, ME-CFS, gastroparesis and/or fibromyalgia. "americans are constantly getting sick" is an actual thing, and most americans appear to think that having food poisoning multiple times a year is just a normal part of eating food
i think mortalityplays and i did the math on ths and determined that americans get food poisoning at a rate of something like 6-20x more often than the average brit
Where are these numbers coming from??? Are people confusing a loose bowel movement with food poisoning?
I’ve had food poisoning twice in 35 years, and both of those were from potluck dinners, not restaurants. Without some hard data, I have a hard time believing that food poisoning is actually this widespread.
Tokuhiro Kawai, Ode to Sleep
Nice piece. I wonder if there’s some deep meaning behind the cats all having halos and the human not having one.
