It really does frustrate me that the majority of worldbuilding in star trek is around the military complexes and the people who join said military complexes.
I know why it is that way. That was the starting premise! Of course that is what the shows would continue to be about! I am not claiming this is a reasonable problem to have! But boy do I have it!
I do think this is where the coding comes in at full force. There's a lot of things that work like the military in fiction but aren't. Like a school for super heroes that train super heroes and then they fight crime, it does many things a military might, but there's no aesthetics of military. With star trek, you get all the military aesthetics, and military coding across decades of star trek media. So even when they do very unmilitary-like thing, the coding is still there. It reads less like "starfleet does many things, including military" and more "yes in this world, the military is responsible for the moss scientists." It plagues me. It plagues meee.

Not to be a bitch but sometimes people engage with fiction in the most boring way possible, and nowhere is this clearer than in videogames. Like what you mean you hate a character just because they were kind of abrasive when speaking to the player character? "They were mean to me" and it didn't occur to you to wonder why? Like, what might their attitude toward you reveal about the world? About the social dynamics within it? About their own perspectives and backgrounds and personalities? Does it even occur you to ask?
