finding out vapes have been lead poisoning people for the past 20 years almost suddenly made a lot of things make sense

Thereâs a lot of excellent examples of the difference between a million and a billion, but hereâs my new personal favorite from a conversation I had today:
A million minutes ago was April 2021, the height of the COVID pandemic.
A billion minutes ago was November 121 CE, the height of the Roman Empire.
Immediate warning to yarn users!
Knitpicks has recently been sending out yarn infested with carpet beetles. Apparently one of their warehouses has an active infestation.
They have shut the warehouse down for now, but if you have recent yarn from them in your stash in may be infested!
Knitpicks is not currently informing their customer base of this issue (pretty standard for them, unfortunately), so word of mouth is necessary.
Here's some more info from Reddit.
On Reddit one person that recently received an infested order is reporting that it came from Columbus, Ohio. So that could be where the infested warehouse is.
Suggested actions are to freeze your yarn for two weeks at 0F, or 72 hours of you can get your freezer colder.
You can also cook your yarn in the oven at 200F.
And, as this summer, black bag your yarn and leave it in a hot car for two weeks to cook.
More information!
Sadly, not good news.
Given the life cycle of carpet beetles, and the fact that at least one person has confirmed the eggs hatched in their yarn only within the last few days, the eggs had to have been laid roughly two weeks ago. So the infestation is older than two weeks at least.
The knitpicks team is currently on Reddit claiming they know nothing about this and will look into it. But other people on Reddit have already said they contacted knitpicks at least a week ago and were told the warehouse was being shut down for inspection. So, at the moment, the private equity firm that owns knitpicks is trying to do damage control. It's unknown if anything will actually be done.
The justices gave Donald Trump the biggest victory he could have asked for on Friday.
But Sotomayor is concerned not just about this particular right: âNo right,â she warns, âis safe in the new legal regime the court creates.â From this point on, courts will have to limit their relief to the parties, denying judges the ability to stop an unconstitutional policy dead in its tracks. The Trump administration will take immediate advantage of this decision: It currently faces more than two dozen nationwide injunctions, and it can now compel judges to severely cut back the scope of those orders. The president can resume implementing many elements of his agenda, including the illegal impoundment of appropriated funding, foreign-aid cuts, voter suppression, and immigration restrictions. Sotomayor decries this outcome, writing:
The rule of law is not a given in this Nation, nor any other. It is a precept of our democracy that will endure only if those brave enough in every branch fight for its survival. Today, the Court abdicates its vital role in that effort. With the stroke of a pen, the president has made a âsolemn mockeryâ of our Constitution. Rather than stand firm, the Court gives way.
âSuch complicity,â she concludes, âshould know no place in our system of law.â
. . .
Jackson also penned a separate dissent that used even harsher rhetoric to accuse the majority of, in essence, crowning Trump a king. The court, the justice writes, has created a âzone of lawlessness within which the executive has the prerogative to take or leave the law as it wishes.â As this âlawlessnessâ flourishes, âexecutive power will become completely uncontainable, and our beloved constitutional Republic will be no more.â
She condemns the decision as an âexistential threatâ to democracy and civil rights, one that âwill surely hasten the downfall of our governing institutions, enabling our collective demise.â And she expressed her âdeep disillusionmentâ with the court for giving Trump this immense gift.
. . .
In addition to blatantly going against the 14th amendment, my understanding is that from now on federal court rulings will only apply to that plaintiff. So in order to find relief from an illegal law, everyone in the country would have to go to court. It's INSANE. ETA: More on that here.
The high court has opened Pandoraâs box.
Sotamayor: âSuppose an executive order barred women from receiving unemployment benefits or black citizens from voting. Is the Government irreparably harmed, and entitled to emergency relief, by a district court order universally enjoining such policies? The majority, apparently, would say yes.â
. . .
Sotamayor: âThis Court endorses the radical proposition that the President is harmed, irreparably, whenever he cannot do something he wants to do, even if what he wants to do is break the law.â
---
If birthright citizenship isn't safe then nothing is. By the end of Trump's term, only white men may be allowed to vote. Hell, if the birthright citenship amendment isn't safe, then neither is the one abolishing slavery. The constitution is now meaningless. We are officially a post-law country. It's the worst ruling since Dredd Scott.
ETA: This is what history books will point to as the final straw in the downfall of US democracy. It's that bad.

Daily reminder that we do not actually live in a dystopian movie put the apocalypse down and back away slowly. You know when your cleaning a room and you pull everything out of it's draws to sort through it and you're like "what the fuck have I done I'm never going to be able to tidy all of this" I think that's the stage we're at in the world. Thanks to social media we've pulled out all the messed up shit from the cupboards of the world, it was always there but now we can see it and we're going to have to sort it all out we made this mess and we can fix it. Falling to the floor sobbing will not clean a crusty room. A group of people working systematically (preferably with music in the background) will.
hooray for blue charmander!
somehow I've done another Chartodile family moment
im so tired of being nice. if you aren't normal about disability in fiction and especially fantasy genre fiction im actually going to come to your house and kill you
"it wouldn't make sense for this modern accommodation to exist in a fantasy setting so-" it's fantasy just make something up
"any disabilities would be cured very easily with magic so there's no reason why-" first of all if that's true your magic system is dogshit and second of all it's fantasy just make something up
"i don't want to include disabled people in this universe because-" go fuck yourself???
the magic one is especially dogshit to me because it shows a fundamental lack of forethought and care about what you're creating. everything has to have some amount of rules dipshit it came free with your fictional universe. if a broken spine or missing arm can be easily healed by a low-level spell then literally nobody will ever be in danger in this setting because it's apparently not an issue to simply reattach their head if it falls off. this is even without tackling the eugenics implications of people in-universe being able to casually heal away what they consider defective. grow up make better bloody excuses write a character with zero limbs because they replaced all of them with sick spider prosthetics etc etc. be creative for once in your life im begging you
Have I reblogged this before? I'm reblogging it again anyway.
If you don't know how to put limits on magic, you're going to lose a lot of narrative tension, whether you're using it to excuse a lack of disabled characters or not. Showing your reader that undeniably fatal injuries can be healed with magic and then letting characters die of other injuries for drama reasons, only tells the audience you don't care about consistency.
Don't get me started on the number of books where pregnancy health complications are somehow unfixable but a character getting their throat slashed or their guts spilled can be easily healed if someone else just puts a little panic into their healing magic.
And then by the same poor logic, you either get tokenized amputees who probably could have had their limbs reattached with the same magic that put some dude's guts back in his body, or you get no disabled people at all because obviously the magic fixes everything. All of which is so deeply unsatisfying.
If you don't know how to fix this because you struggle to come up with magic rules, here's an easy one: just make the healing magic work within the limits of the body. Instead of instant magic fixes, it just enhances the body's healing ability and trying to make it do more than that causes problems. There, now you have a free easy way to limit your magic system and avoid erasing disabled people in your setting.
The thing is, while you may not be able to convince yourself that you're some uniquely special good person, that also means that you're probably not uniquely horrible and evil. In my experience a lot of useless self-rumination can be countered with "I'm probably not actually THAT special". You don't have to be An Exception in either direction and you're probably not, honestly speaking.

The nationâs ultrawealthy are starting to lay low, according to their therapists, financial advisers, and real-estate agents.
Gosh.
Must be rough for them.
Migraines are literally the stupidest thing in human evolution. "Oh no, we're experiencing too much Thing! Better send a rail spike through the skull and blind ourselves about it" like c'mon, man

I just felt these tags were too important not to add @blacksasuke
The particular segment of medical racism that says âBlack people are built tougherâ is a great example of why âpositiveâ stereotypes donât exist.Â
Adding your tags, prev, cause.. yeah.
at a tribal finance conference listening to a quileute tribal council member talk about how companies have bought every house in forks, wa because itâs a tourist destination so they canât hire people to work for the tribe
anyway fuck stephenie meyer for profiting so intensely off of racist stereotypes of quilteutes and all native people while never contributing a dime to help them solve the problems she caused!

European Jews on Ellis Island protest against their deportation to Germany, 1936
via reddit
Donât forget this part either. While the 1924 Immigration Act essentially cut off Jewish immigration to the U.S., further action by officials enforcing anti-immigrant law was a huge issue in the 1930s too. Being a refugee did not save you from deportation.
And the same thing is happening today with all the refugees from the west and south Asian, and Central and South American countries weâve either destablized or aided in the destabilization of. We canât let ICE and their minions deport these immigrants to be killed.
Reblogging with regard to âcurrentâ affairs in Germany: The right to seek asylum was established in reaction to the situation of refugees from Nazi Germany. No one wanted to accept these refugees. Jews who lost citizenship in Germany had âa hard timeâ to find a new home anywhere else.
Europeâs fight against âoverwhelmingâ numbers of refugees today is turning back the wheel of history.
