My biggest struggle with autism was always the reality that no matter what you do, people will misunderstand you. This can be true for everyone, but for us it's often amplified due to reasons outside of our control. For too long I blamed it on myself and was convinced that I needed to just shut up and maybe if I did, people would finally stop judging me based on false perceptions of what they THINK my words (or the fleeting expressions on my face) meant.

But eventually you realize that even when you've decided to be quiet, people can and will still form negative opinions about who they think you are. Too loud and joyful… accidentally rude. Too quiet? Well, turns out that's rude too.

Maybe it's in the way you don't make perfect eye contact all the time, or perhaps you worded yourself in a manner that was born of excitement but were told it sounded mean in a way you never felt nor intended it to. It never stops, and no matter who you are or how you behave, there will be people out there who aren't going to like you.
