the way how the d1 manual is written makes it less like "you were ordered to blow up a hospital before you found out people were there" and more "your boss told you and your buddies to fire at civiliations" with the phrase "fire upon" implying guys with guns shooting at something

the way how people imagined the situation, maybe even id themselves at the time, probably differs with what we got officially

in a way, the 2005 movie depicted something similar where a part has sarge telling his crew to shoot people lying around before soldiers notice they were alive and not infected

something close to that scene would seem more fitting to people's expectations

they could even have it so the officier just tells a bunch of soldiers to shoot people, they hesitate and doomguy looks back at him and simply body slams the guy, in a somewhat less dramatic, maybe even campy way

but specially because the way how the new lore is set up is "it's how a doom fan would imagine" when 1:

it's subjective because doom fans have their own different ideas of "what is doom anyway" for a series known for not taking story seriously

and 2: even if there's general or commonly accepted ideas, they would still differ from what we got

between doomguy having pure black hair and the dead family backstory, those are things i barely saw doom fans think of

of course, id doesn't have to do exactly how fans would do, specially given that the slayer games do deserve praise for their new ideas to doom and the issues around companies taking ideas from fans

but the whole stuff around the sentinels, maykrs, even the supposed new version of uac etc is seen as its own new universe

unlike the stuff we got that's supposed to be related to the classic games that people already had their ideas of "what else could be", specially with the amount of mods and assets that felt like an expanded universe at the time (as in, you know, not counting goofy mods or those based on other franchises and all)

again, d3 being its own continuity is for the better and something that could be a better standard to a series like doom

i also suspect we're getting further from the "doom is a series that never took story seriously" mentallity, because soon people might forget john carmack even had that quote

just with youtube videos posting cutscenes and showing moments of the games, people will forget how some fans perceived doom specially before certain games came out

it's part of why i keep bringing up specific things like the memes that might've inspired the doomslayer character: it includes specific points of views and mentallites from the past, that barely can show up to someone who starts their journey with the series with the new games

(even if, at the same time, the community did thought of "dumb canon" like "doom is sp only, quake is mp only")
