I didn't think much of it till i was editing clips but this has got to be such a confusing scene for teddy. he literally just poured his heart out to matthew and sent the guy to france, only to realize that this random bumbling and mostly harmless investor did not leave, knows he was going to kill the prosecutor, speaks spanish and therefore has overheard a Lot about the plan teddy has been working on for years

also now i am thinking about all the water symbolism in TNM there's a LOT there especially if you consider the show as a whole. S2's iconic swimming pool and the boat scene as well as the oceanside confrontation in s5 come to mind (near death experiences, baptism, rebirth) but there's also the less considered ones - the pool in the dance scene, the ocean side walks, of course all the hullaballoo around shipping and containers, the s2ep 2 reunion on a beach, Teddy's ep 6 shower scene etc. In season one there's water everywhere because so much takes place on an island but I would be curious to look at the more specific uses - the waterfall like we just talked about, but also the key scene where Roper explains his worldview to Andrew while they are standing on the beach ; Danny's interest in marine creatures as well as the memory of his father making him stand in salt water with his cuts to "toughen him up" ; Jonathan killing Freddie Hamid in a swimming pool and Jed being tortured in a bathtub.

If i had to see an overachieving theme here, I would say water = change, chaos, chance, uncertainty, the fluid margins of society. In general this is a pretty good stand in for the world of spies in general where everything is fluid and troubling, relies a lot on emotion and unconscious dynamics too (which water is often associated with). On one side the awful stuff - crimes and lies and deceit ; Roper as a sort of abyssal monstrous creature, profiting off the chaos of war, preying on the vulnerable who fall outside dominant social systems, a survival of the fittest environment, "sink or swim" mindset regarding childrearing, an amoral approach to life. Also Corky pissing off the terasse lmao (a disdain for social norms of politeness and a desire to degrade things out of frustration). Perhaps also the lawyer's daugther hanging herself at her pool party in the shower - a general sense of sinking despair, amorality, everything goes cynicism where nothing really matters, etc.

On the other side there's Jonathan and Teddy's bond, who find vulnerability and understanding in changing conditions, whose unstable identities allow them to connect in a unique way, there's tenderness and truth and rebirth out of boxes and oppressive categories ; and sexual fluidity, too, as well as a more fluid approach to gendered behavior. I will also add Danny to that, his interest in marine creatures indicating a mind more turned towards curiosity and the diversity of life than warfare and profit (ok he's a kid but ! symbolism ! Roper would hate it if Danny wanted to become a marine biologist i think) ; and Jed resisting torture - in troubled conditions some people find the ability to stand for what they believe in while others will betray anyone and anything and believes the circumstances make them justified.
