That last infographic I reblogged about India's heat wave turned out to be miscontextualized by the OP, so the information was wrong. I will try to make up for it by spreading a recent news article instead, dated Jun 10th 2026.
Experts warn that official heatwave death figures are grossly underestimated.
A recent study underlines the dangers of these worsening highs. It estimates that a single day of extreme heat causes approximately 3,400 excess deaths nationally in India. A five-day heatwave is linked to nearly 30,000 extra deaths, according to the paper published in the Frontiers in Environmental Health journal last month. These heatwaves are becoming more frequent, longer and more intense as climate change – driven by the burning of fossil fuels – pushes global temperatures higher. The past 11 years, from 2015 to 2025, were the hottest on record, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). [...]
The research also reveals deep inequalities. The five states bearing the highest heatwave mortality burden account for 66 per cent of national excess deaths while contributing only 29 per cent of India’s GDP – meaning the places least able to fund adaptation are also those facing the greatest risk. The authors argue this should reshape how federal investment in heat resilience is directed. [...]
this might sound insane but I love how almost tactile the phm soundtrack is. there's so many "hard" sounds, like claps, clicks, hits, etc, which on its own already stands out as unique but, even more than that, when combined with the choir singing it literally sounds like a perfect blend of erid and earth. are we joking
#interviews with daniel pemberton are fascinating for this reason#the way he talks about music scratches my brain and i honestly think it’s improved my playing#he got a group of high school percussionists to record some body percussion#he tried a ton of new instruments#he did everything he could to steer away from western music#one of the sounds during the build/bridge of time go fishing was taken from a leaky facet#time go fishing in general is a masterpiece#you want it to finally end so badly but you want to sit down and listen to everything and pick a part every little piece#but jesus oh my god it needs to end i’m gonna have a panic attack#and the key change? chef’s kiss#‘’no time for caution vs time go fishing’’ no time for caution is nowhere near time go fishing let’s be real with outselves here#my drum teacher said that the sound track is ‘’the voice of many’’#the hail mary may have one person on it but it’s a collaboration of the entire world#there’s influences from countless people and cultures#the population of two entire PLANETS are cheering the hail mary on. even if one doesn’t know it#back to the actual topic of ‘hard sounds’#very few synths or drum machines are used#AMAZE AMAZE AMAZE THATS SO COOL#he had a lot of ametrure choirs and percussionists work in the track with him#and#omg that’s so cool#so it creates small imperfections you could never get from a computer#it creates such a human and earthy feel#ugh#daniel pemberton the man that you are#don’t even get me started on Learning To Communicate and Cetrifuge
@lixel-5 literally fantastic tags. "time go fishing" might be my favorite off the entire soundtrack it blows my mind every time (I made a separate post about what it does with the dies irae here, which makes me geek out every time I hear it)

On this day, 30 June 1960, Congo achieved independence from Belgium following decades of brutal colonial rule which killed 8-10 million people – half its population. Belgian authorities used men for forced labour in the rubber industry, having the wives and children of workers who didn't meet their daily quotas dismembered, killed and even eaten. Following independence, Belgium and other Western powers continued to maintain power and rob the country's rich natural resources. The first democratically elected Prime Minister, socialist Patrice Lumumba was arrested, tortured and murdered on the instructions of Belgium and the CIA, who then installed a brutal dictator. Pictured is a Congolese man named Nsala, photographed in 1904 by Alice Harris. Cropped from this photo to the left is a hand and foot of his 5-year-old daughter. She was killed and eaten, as was his wife and son, by rubber industry guards as a punishment for Nsala not harvesting enough rubber. This book gives a detailed history of colonialism in Congo: https://shop.workingclasshistory.com/collections/books/products/lord-leverhulme-s-ghosts-colonial-exploitation-in-the-congo-jules-marchal
here is the full photo. in my opinion it very much misses the point to crop it. we don't need to sanitise the horrors of Colonialism.
More background on the photograph, published in 1904 in "King Leopold's rule in Africa": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nsala_of_Wala_in_the_Nsongo_District
I love it when media fucks up the wording of the Rasputin disclaimer and ends up with shit like "any resemblance to people or locations living or dead is coincidental". I'd love to know what committing libel against a dead location would entail.
Fuck the Fiesta Mall in Mesa, AZ. I heard it ate someone once.
this sea sucks shit. it doesnt even have any scrolls im sure
#Sorry what do you mean “rasputin disclaimer” (via @big-condiments-official)
For once I'm not actually doing a bit; those "any resemblance to real persons living or dead" disclaimers genuinely exist because of Rasputin.
(Im brief, the 1932 MGM Studios film Rasputin and the Empress is a dramatisation of the life and times of Grigori Rasputin which is partially adapted from the personal memoirs of Felix Yusupov, one of the principal conspirators responsible for Rasputin's assassination. The film, which was heavily marketed as being based on real events, falsely claims that Rasputin fucked Yusupov's wife, Princess Irina Alexandrovna. As both Yusupov and Princess Irina were still alive at the time, they jointly sued MGM for libel – and won. This is actually, literally the reason the practice of including those disclaimers was taken up.)

the solution to the Mathematician's Lament is to teach calculus in early grade school if not kindergarten & i am being 100% unironic
Why playing with algebraic and calculus concepts—rather than doing arithmetic drills—may be a better way to introduce children t
The familiar, hierarchical sequence of math instruction starts with counting, followed by addition and subtraction, then multiplication and division. The computational set expands to include bigger and bigger numbers, and at some point, fractions enter the picture, too. Then in early adolescence, students are introduced to patterns of numbers and letters, in the entirely new subject of algebra. A minority of students then wend their way through geometry, trigonometry and, finally, calculus, which is considered the pinnacle of high-school-level math.
But this progression actually “has nothing to do with how people think, how children grow and learn, or how mathematics is built,” says pioneering math educator and curriculum designer Maria Droujkova. She echoes a number of voices from around the world that want to revolutionize the way math is taught, bringing it more in line with these principles.
The current sequence is merely an entrenched historical accident that strips much of the fun out of what she describes as the “playful universe” of mathematics, with its more than 60 top-level disciplines, and its manifestations in everything from weaving to building, nature, music and art. Worse, the standard curriculum starts with arithmetic, which Droujkova says is much harder for young children than playful activities based on supposedly more advanced fields of mathematics.
“Calculations kids are forced to do are often so developmentally inappropriate, the experience amounts to torture,” she says. They also miss the essential point—that mathematics is fundamentally about patterns and structures, rather than “little manipulations of numbers,” as she puts it. It’s akin to budding filmmakers learning first about costumes, lighting and other technical aspects, rather than about crafting meaningful stories.

Residents search through earthquake rubble in La Guaira, Venezuela, after the June 24 twin quakes. Years of U.S. blockade left hospitals, pu
By Gary Wilson
Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Kevin J. Jarrard, who previously commanded the 4th Marine Division, landed in Caracas the night of June 25 to direct Department of War operations on Venezuelan soil. A Marine general is not sent to run rescue work. He is trained to command troops — for war, invasion and occupation.
There is no honest way to read a Marine general’s arrival in Caracas without starting from that fact: Venezuela is a country under U.S. occupation.
