Absolutely enamoured with this snail mug I got yesterday....
A snug of snoffee
Anybody else desperately miss summer reading programs from like. 20 years ago.
for everyone telling me to check my library of COURSE I have, those are what Iâm talking about! But the adult ones my library runs 1) are through an app 2) donât have any prizes, or the prizes are raffle tickets 3) arenât themed around Space or Castles or Dinosaurs or Pirates, the only themes I will accept
and 4) donât start until 3 weeks from now
I have checked all the libraries remotely close to me they are all run through apps. if you have paper printout fun reading programs at YOUR library for godâs sake send me a picture so I can dream of the beautiful analog summer reading I could be having
I feel like this a problem tumblr users will be happy to solve.
There are lots of reasons why fandom is "quieter" now than it used to be. Some theories are more compelling to me than others, and they all have a different scale of impact. We'll never know for sure, of course, but I like to think about it. Thus, this poll.
Of the list below, which reason do you find most compelling or do you think had the biggest impact?
New entrants to fandom don't know the old ways
fandom olds didn't teach the newcomers how to fandom
covid/surge in fandom due to quarantine and lockdowns
"antis" and other harassment campaigns against creators
creators posting complaints about comments (people worry about commenting wrong)
rise of discord popularity - fandom is walled off from each other
tumblr porn ban and other reasons people left the site
capitalism turning fandom into a passive "view and move on" commodity
rules from social media impacting fan culture (eg. don't comment on old posts)
general state of the world / burnout
social anxieties in an increasingly complex online culture
"surveillance state" worries and not wanting to be perceived
This is an incomplete list, so if your most compelling reason isn't listed, feel free to add it in the notes.
You are 60% water and every lake, river, pond, swamp, creek, and ocean you encounter wants to reclaim it desperately. Be careful out there.
Good, I hope it haunts everyone about to enter a body of water so bad that they wear a life jacket. đ
Every single person I knew (past tense) who has drowned was "a strong swimmer." Water in the wild does not care how good you are at swimming.
I mean this with all due respect:
You are not going to pass a skillcheck against a rip current once it has you.
Waves will not bow to your physical prowess no matter how impressive.
Shock does not care that you used to be on your school swim team.
If you hit your head, being good at swimming isn't going to turn you face-up while you're unconscious.
You may be unable to return to shore. Rescue may be unable to find you quickly.
Scheduling this for when weather starts warming up. Be careful swimming this summer

alright I've got to do some quick math to explain attitudes towards AI to my boss.
we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)
please rb for larger sample size!
Question 1/3
What is your age, and do you feel AI is a net positive or net negative in our lives today?
under 18, AI is a net positive
under 18, AI is a net negative
18-29, AI is a net positive
18-29, AI is a net negative
30-45, AI is a net positive
30-45, AI is a net negative
46-60, AI is a net positive
46-60, AI is a net negative
over 60, AI is a net postive
over 60, AI is a net negative
Question 2/3
How often do you visit or interact with museums/archives (whether in person or online)?
Frequently (multiple times per month)
Often (multiple times per year)
Occasionally (a couple times per year)
Rarely (once every couple of years)
Never :(
Question 3/3
If you saw a museum was using AI in exhibits, marketing, research, etc., would you be more or less inclined to visit that museum?
under 18, more inclined
under 18, less inclined
18-29, more inclined
18-29, less inclined
30-45, more inclined
30-45, less inclined
46-60, more inclined
46-60, less inclined
over 60, more inclined
over 60, less inclined
Thank you for helping with this data collection. Please rb for as big a sample as possible!

just another one of those memories that haunts me daily

Basically this is the same message as the previous video I shared by this creator. But itâs just an older TikTok. Like they have mentioned, it seems like this argument keeps cycling around every few months. Itâs not hard to understand. If you donât support and encourage writers, then theyâre going to give up and quit writing. Simple as that. The community side of fanfic and AO3 has died off. Writers are leaving. AI writing, puritans and the âfandom policeâ are taking over. Please, just support those of us that are left.
They don't even engage with our long ass fics when they are completed. Whenever I post my final chapter on one of my novel length fics, I never see an uptick in comments with new usernames. We don't even get additional engagement when we do cross that finish line. So, motivation to complete fics is basically at an all time low across the board.
Also - the one longfic I dropped as a whole 45k/20 chapters at once has *by far* some of the lowest engagement of any of my works, which I normally release as connected works in a series. I've always wondered if people look at the length and go "ugh, I'm not committing to that" so honestly you can't win either way 𤡠"Nobody" reads incomplete works, "nobody" reads complete works or at least they never tell you about it! Among other writers I know, bot comments make up the majority of their engagement.
Like, I don't care, I'm a stubborn rat bastard and I'll keep writing as long as I have something to write. But it *is* an ecosystem.
Not âOnly my reading of canon is correctâ or âInterpretations are subjective and all validâ but a secret third thing, âMore than one interpretation can be valid but thereâs a reason your English teacher had you cite quotes and examples in your papers, you have to have a strong argument that your interpretation is actually supported by the text or it is just wrong and Iâm fine with telling you itâs wrong, actually.â
If the text says the curtains are blue you can argue about what that means; but if youâre going to claim theyâre actually yellow youâd better have a really good argument.
i know the curtains better than the author. thank you for coming to my ted talk
Fandom has such unresolved mommy/daddy issues about authors. If you apply a little reading comprehension skills to my original post youâll see I didnât say anything at all about the author. You guys always make âinterpretationâ about your beef with the author. Youâre all obsessed with the author. This post is just about deciphering what is there in canon. Figuring out what is being communicated by the canon itself with all the words and images and basic formal elements that are there in canon. Thatâs all itâs about. It really doesnât matter if the author intentionally put all those things there in a pattern that might support the idea that this one characterâs queer. Thatâs not what this is about. What matters is if you can compellingly argue thereâs a pattern of evidence there. Or not. Everyone is conspiring together to make me go insane still adding shit about authorial intent on my post.
