they were suspecting some kind of infection, and decided to take a sample using an increment borer, which is like a tool you twist into the trunk so you can remove a thin sample big enough to look at all the rings and stuff inside without cutting it down/hurting it too much:

anyway. they put this in…..and removed two inches of wood. the entire tree was hollow. 

what had happened, as they figured out, was that at some point along the line of this tree being cared for by university landscaping, somebody accidentally trimmed a large branch at the top of the tree wrong. the tree couldn’t heal the branch up correctly, leaving it open to rainwater and snow to start eating away the middle of the branch, which then left it open to infection to further eat away down the branch into the main tree when spring came, which then attracted insects and termites that started eating the heartwood of the trunk…..and the result was a huge tree in this very highly trafficked public area, directly next to a building on campus, appearing relatively fine on the outside while supporting literal tons of wood on an outer cambium layer two inches thick.

So my theory, what if every shirt in Homestuck is actually a simplified stand-in for a more complex design?

Dandelions

Yellow and happy. Super strong and resilient. Everyone hates them and they don’t care. Makes a good “kick” in garden salads. 

White Clover

Small and gentle. Always has 50 friends around them. Little dots of white and pink. Looks like a Faerie would turn it into a dress

BIG BOI. When I was little I used to think they looked like pot. So green and strong and taller than me.

Creeping Charlies

Bees love them! Blue! Happy! Gets absolutely everywhere! I’ve never loved something so annoying! Just look at them

SCARY BOI. Her mom thinks she’s going through a phase. But it’s NOT a phase.

St John’s Wart

So pretty! And yellow! It reminds me of Daffodils! Old doctors would use it as a medicine because it was the old times!

Tsunami! Or, wait, is it?

Technically, yes! This partial collapse of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier in Iceland is an excellent example of how tsunamis form. Notice the lack of a crescent break, and how the rapid displacement of water causes a surging flood that at first seems to suck the water away from the shore. Apply this to a much larger scale, and voila, you have a tsunami.
