someone on here posted about how Benoit seemed more radicalized after the events of Glass Onion (if i can find the post again I'll link it) and i haven't stopped thinking about it
here's what we know about benoit blanc
he's a famous detective who has worked on a variety of high-profile cases
his father was a cop
his mother was religious and they stopped speaking to each other
he listens to musicals
he is very observant
he is not religious
he lives with a man (confirmed off-screen to be his partner, ambiguous onscreen)
he is bad at mystery games
we know glass onion took place in May 2020. as part of this case, he watched a powerful white man try (and eventually fail) to steal the work of one Black woman and try to silence/intimidate another. and right after that he likely observed the way cops treated people (especially people of color) during the protests of summer 2020
In knives out, Benoit Blanc works closely with the cops, but also willfully invites a suspect he knows is involved in the death of Harlan. While he does not do anything to obscure her potential guiltiness, he does let her protect herself.
in glass onion, Blanc agrees to help Helen with the case outside of law enforcement. the cops don't even show up until AFTER the glass onion building bursts into flames.
In wake up dead man, Jud is already assumed guilty despite circumstantial evidence, but Blanc's reading of him shows him to be kind-hearted and incapable of murder. While he does work with the cops, he intentionally gets in the way of the law and helps protect Jud because he knows him to be a scapegoat.
i think it makes a lot of sense over the entire timeline's narrative that Blanc would become more aware of the systemic issues in the justice system after the first two cases we've seen as movies, and that he would be more willing to go outside the law to make sure justice is served
has anyone figured out how to turn off the thing where you love your pet so much it slides inexorably into grief-borrowing
rewatched wake up dead man with a friend a few days ago and they said “do you think the reason why jud gets so upset at people calling him the “killer priest” is because he can’t say he’s not, because he DID kill a man?”. anyway i’m sending rian johnson a cheque for my therapy bills
Insane of Jud to hit Benoit with such bangers as “The darkness of that story was the bedrock of this place" or "Testing tolerances, tapping deep poisoned wells, hardening, binding with complicity" or "Because in the part of my soul that cannot lie to Christ, or myself, or you” immediately after the KO that was “young, dumb, and full of Christ” what a guy

there’s something very beautiful about being able to try again tomorrow
I have been trying tomorrow for the past 3 years
and you still have tomorrow to try again
Once again so impressed with Rian Johnson’s attention to detail! You can see the stitched-on devils head from the very start of the film, but of course no one is looking out for that so no one would pickup on it! Samson disappears into the back rooms when Martha asks for a minute ‘alone’ with Wicks, and we don’t see him throughout the entire funeral - something you can be forgiven for missing due to the generic nature of ensemble scenes!
Event the (non-)diegetic passage of time is correct! Jud says that it took him an hour to write down everything that happened in the recap for Blanc at exactly an hour into the film starting! It’s exactly ten minutes from Martha walking into the church to her going for her final prayer (the timeline set out by dr. Nat), and then another 19 mins between her first feeling the effects and her final death. You can even see the moment Blanc realises what she did as she touches her lips just before he stops talking!
There’s so many more and honestly kudos to all the editors and props and set teams and actors who made this all work so perfectly!

What I legit thought the punchline was gonna be.
but what if
fucking spot the difference game
(getting a taste of my own medicine) actually this is okay. Is this what you guys have bene whining about? Jesus christ

Things I noticed about Wake Up Dead Man from rewatching it again:
-When Wicks was “Burning the flock” he went for personal attacks against the women and career attacks against the men. This could have to do with his sexism believing the women’s careers aren’t important enough to attack or him feeling deeper hatred for the women in the group. It’s a noticeable difference between “I’ll make sure nobody will ever trust you as a doctor again” vs “You don’t deserve healing and you’ll die in pain”
-Wicks doesn’t insult Martha when he was burning the flock, maybe because he thinks higher of her slightly or maybe because she told him where eves apple was.
- Jud renamed the church after Grace, “Our lady of Perpetual Grace”
- Eves apple, which in media is often used to point out women’s sins and wrongdoings was used to reveal the sins of almost every man in the church.
-Nats last name is Sharp. Which is really funny to me
i dont see anyone talk about this and i think its a shame. the opening sequence where we learn about the flock is so nicely done and so so fucking important to me. in knives out, the cast is introduced in the interviews. a fairly simple, classic way of introducing the suspects. in glass onion, we're introduced to them through the puzzle miles sends them aka they're introduced through miles. their story begins and ends with miles. (the only exception is andi, who we get to know through helen, the only person in the world who loves her. im fine) but in wake up dead man we've come to know the flock through jud's conversations with them. jud's first thought upon arrival is to sit down with them and get to know their life story. yeah obviously he's a priest, he should know about the people he's supposed to guide spiritually but the WAY he does it is so unique. and its because he cares. he cares so fucking much he wants to build a new cross on his probably second day there. when he hears about the harlot whore his first thought is to ask martha about it. even after hearing the name "harlot whore" he doesn't go in with any judgement. martha reasons she was a whore bc she dressed in an outgoing way and knew 'her brands'. the way jud reacts to this is extremely telling. plainly, he finds it ridiculous. you can see the disbelief on his face. and even after hearing grace's story there's no actual judgement from him. he's shocked, absolutely, but he never ever participates in the name calling and shaming the other's do. and then we learn about the flock. he's so gentle throughout these conversations, you can tell he cares so fucking much, that he wants to make this work, that he wants to be good priest for them. what he doesn't realize, is that he already is, simply by hearing their story, by trying to form that prayer group. i also can't help but think of the places these conversations take in. they're in the refectory with martha, the only place martha ever called home, the place she can't escape from. he's in sam's place, drinking coke exactly like he is. that simple detail catches my eye every time i watch that scene. jud is just so inherently thoughtful. he's in vera's home, the house she's been trapped in since cy showed up, accepting tea but ultimately focusing on vera and how she feels about all of it. when she says she hopes her father is looking down at her and is pleased, he doesn't believe her, or well, i would say he's able to emphatize with people so much he knows it's not the whole truth. with cy, they're outside, showing how cy never saw vera's house the home she tried to make it for him. jud's still emphatic, still not turning away from cy even after seeing how unchristian he's being. he tries to help him and cy misunderstands him completely. he's in the bar with nat, with a water in front of him bc he doesn't drink, but he's still THERE bc he WANTS to connect with nat. he's in lee's house, his fortress, bc that's where lee feels safe. he reads his BOOK. that's so important to me, why does no one talk about it, THAT'S how dedicated he is to these people, he's willing to sit through a book he finds hard to swallow just so he could understand lee more. he's in simon's house, the house which wicks trapped her in with his manipulation, surrounded by smoke, gentle and kind, not commenting about the smoke in his face even once, there only to be a listener. they all trust him enough immediately to tell their story and they're met with absolute acceptance and kindness and they don't CARE. they never notice how much jud gives them bc they're so caught up in wicks's manipulation. and still, jud doesn't resent them for this, the only person he's angry with is wicks. that should tell you everything you need to know about him and i'm sure it told benoit absolutely everything HE needed to know.
the camerawork and composition of Wake Up Dead Man is incredibly instrumental to the storytelling in a way that I think most people miss if they aren't art students or insane film nerds. (i am said art student and film nerd, my niche is literally camera angles)
Wicks is almost ALWAYS shot in a low angle. (also known as a worm's eye view). This is an angle used to make the subject look larger than they really are (think, a person looking down at the ground). This is used in film to convey power or presence in a scene. This angle conveys authority, power, who's in control in the scene. Now, it can also be used in reverse, but this is not the case with how it's used to frame Wicks. And if he is not in a low angle (rare), he is shown to be in control in other ways, be through other framing devices, or the fact that he is yelling or physically moving towards someone. Even in the scene where Jud is UP ON A LADDER, Wicks is positioned in frame as bigger than him. Wicks is always bigger. (AND WICKS IS SMALLER THAN JUD. JUD IS 6'1".)
And by contrast, Jud is, for most of the film, while interacting with the flock, shot in an level angle. Even if the angle has a slight high or low tilt, he is almost always equal in height or positioning with the other characters in the scene. While yes, he has authority and power over them via his position in the church, he does not abuse that power over them like Wicks does. He is trying to stay on their level. He is equal to them, and sometimes, he's shot in a way that makes him SMALLER than them. Jud is not a short character, and his past would imply he should have power over other characters if he wanted to. But he is small. He does not take up space. (which is another great element to characterization but that's for another post).
The camera angles and shot blocking of this movie are just as instrumental to the emotional storytelling and impact as the lighting is, and I hope it's noticed by more people
rip king, truly nobody was doing it for weird sci-fi and fantasy obsessed nerds like you 💔
My prediction for the next Benoit Blanc film is that after Marta (accused of a murder, scared but works with Blanc), Helen (pretends to be a murdered person to work with Blanc), and Jud (accused of a murder, keeps trying to confess to it and has to be stopped by Blanc), the next in line is going to be someone who has not committed a murder, but really wants to do so and Blanc has to continuously talk them out of it while also trying to find a different murderer.

I feel like not enough people are talking about how the reveal that Monsignor Wicks also desired the diamond that he believed had driven his mother to sin - just like Adam took a bite of the Biblical apple after Eve. And, just like Adam blaming Eve, Monsignor Wicks has spent the rest of his life blaming his mother (and women like her) for the world's misfortunes.
Oh, and also, remember how Christ's sacrifice on the cross, in the Biblical canon, redeemed this original sin of Adam and Eve by taking it upon himself ? And remember how Jud (St. Jude, The Saint for the Hopeless and the Despaired, patron saint of hopeless causes, little prayed to because of his superficial similarity to deception and murder, commonly depicted carrying the image of Jesus in his hand or close to his chest) took the diamond that had symbolised this "original sin" of the Church and placed it literally into the image of Christ ?
Also, the fact that the person who "redeemed" the Church in this way is explicitly called out to be a CARPENTER - or at least someone good with wood ?? The fact that the image of Christ - which he makes himself - in which he hides the diamond was raised up to replace the empty space left by the cross destroyed by Grace ?? The fact that, in doing so, he removes the physical symbol of Wicks' grudge and hatred, and lets go of these emotions in favour of Christ ?
All this while Tom Waits' "Come Up To The House" is singing "Come down off the cross, we can use the wood" ? Metaphorically calling for Our Lady of Perpetual Fortitude to "come down off the cross" of it's hatred for it's founding sin ? To learn to show - as Jud changes it's name to, not the fortitude to bear it every single day, but the grace to let go of it ?
This movie makes me insane
I was thinking about Wake Up Dead Man today as i often do, and specifically about the names Martha and Samson. I love the allusions to Christianity in the movie and both Martha and Samson are biblical characters so i thought about it.
Samson was a man who famously had complete trust in the woman he loved and who eventually lost everything (including his life) because of it.
And Martha was a devout woman who was so caught up with performing her percieved duties that she forgot what her faith was really all about. (Luke 10:40-42)
This movie is so good everytime i think about it it gets better
