I've seen the idea around that if Aerion did in fact get killed in the tourney, Maekar wouldn't forgive Baelor for not siding with the family and kinda blame him for it, even if Baelor wasn't the one who struck the final blow. I vibe with it, it's a good one, and I love me some medieval family tragedy.
But the Spring Sickness is still coming, and we all know who it famously kills: both of Baelor's sons.
So, imagine for a moment:
A man sits alone, grieving silently for his lost children. He looks up, and he sees his brother standing before him.
They know the same pain. But it's the man's fault his brother feels it.
Maybe this is justice? That this man has to go through what he put his brother through twice over?
But there is none of the anger he once saw in his brother's eyes. Just sympathy.
And the man breaks completely.
