book!grace and movie!rocky had to be separated because their freak levels are so ungodly high that being in a spaceship together for four years would cause the universe to collapse upon itself. like, movie!grace and book!rocky are freaks within their own rights but unfortunately it’s pretty hard to top (ha) a nerd who’s suspiciously into medplay and a nudist that eats in front of people
this is such a halfbaked thot bc my last full mash rewatch was a solid seven years ago but. the narrative vs reality. mash lasts 11 years. the korean war lasts 3. So we compress the two together and we get a hawkeye pierce who leaves a sprightly 30ish-year-old and returns to his father three years later, with graying hair, hunched over shoulders, and a weathered face and battered body that has seen a decade of war.
I’m paying to force seven thousand strangers to see a photo of my late husband having fun with his dog. Tumblr Blaze is totally worth it. XD
“To the blood that drips into our boots.” “And stains our socks with gay magenta polka dots.” “To butchery. Mayhem.”

mash + moonlighting fourth wall breaks
M*A*S*H // Swamp - Talking Heads
Once I find the time energy and braincells to elaborate on why mash is haunted it's over for yall
I still don't have the braincells because I'm saving those for grad school so I can write actual real essays but I'm going to. Elaborate. Finally.
Mash is haunted. During your first watch, seeing those 3 years of war stretch into 11 seasons, you might think "oh yeah they're haunted by the war" and yes they totally are. But there is something beyond that, a show that is haunted by itself.
Of course we have a literal ghost:
And then the frequent mentions of those who are dead or otherwise gone invoke entirely different ghosts.
Even when Radar is no longer on the show he actually is: During Goodbye Farewell and Amen they had to borrow scenes from Bug Out, turning an already haunting episode into a haunted episode. Not all ghosts are necessarily dead they just "cannot be fully present" and "[mark] a relation to what is no longer or not yet"
That is how the show haunts itself, referencing its own future, whether that be the future of its own characters or the war they are stuck in. Some of these are intentional, some of these aren't, but an unintentional ghost is a ghost all the same.
Even the discussions if the show is actually about Vietnam instead of Korea is a symptom of this haunting. The war is a tragedy condemned to repeat itself, and the future war haunts mash, a show produced with foresight of these events, right from the beginning, right from the moment the title card situates the war a hundred years ago.
In conclusion: Mash is haunted
(Richard Siken // Carson McCullers // Martin Hägglund // Guillermo del Toro // W.H. Auden // Jo Labanyi)
the hundred years war...
will i ever stop collecting timeloop mash screenshots? no, no i wont

something so hauntological about watching mash season 3 knowing how it ends...none of the characters know henry's never going to make it home, the actors all found out in real time. but the narrative knows how this ends, and the narrative is waiting with an open mouth. so the narrative has henry prefigure his own death throughout the season. in o.r. when hawkeye reassures him one day you're gonna have to go back and die in your bed in bloomington, henry says that he's done that several times. he complains in private charles lamb that everything in this country disappears except me (untrue) followed by boy, would i like to wake up some morning, look down and find myself gone (true). when he gets trapped in the wreckage of the latrine in bombed he knocks twice for "dead" rather than three times for "alive." then there's the scene in the consultant where he soaks in the pool, calling it heaven but says the water could be just a titch warmer (burning burning burning), avoiding conversation with frank by submerging himself underwater. henry spends the whole season unknowingly rehearsing his impending death. he goes around camp trying on other people's deaths for size, unaware that he's dead himself.
in conclusion:
Buffy fighting so hard to decide her own future and go to college instead of "only" being a slayer just to have an absolutely horrible time at college so far is going to make me insane
Buffy Summers, the living weapon, the child soldier, who was destined to die young as part of a chain of magically destined expendable teenage girls, who defied prophecy by coming back to life, who saw her friends get harmed and killed, who had to make a million impossibly difficult choices, now taking Intro to Psych....
I need her prof to hurry up with the Freud bullshit and start giving her the tools to understand trauma and do something about it
