Young Hero Sent On A Quest meets other young heroes also sent on various quests—only to discover they're all being used as free child labor by the same flaky wizard as a scam to collect magical artifacts.
the Young Heroes' collective new "Quest" is now to Unionize.....
actually this is funnier if there are multiple wizards involved. the 12-year-olds combine their knowledge and realize the wizards are operating as a unified corporate entity...so then of course they have to go on a Quest To Meet The Monarch to ask the Crown to rule on this previously undeclared power bloc. which in a feudal fantasy world causes all sorts of political intrigue! none of it good
so then we've got corporate executive wizards facing off against royal anti-monopoly legal teams. meanwhile the aforementioned 12-year-olds are standing by pissed off and chewing popcorn (and hoarding undeclared magical artifacts they may or may not collectively vote to use as ammunition to fuel a revolutionary uprising). the!! possibilities!!!!!!

remembering how in 8th grade i went school with a pair of twins who would sometimes switch outfits during lunch period.
they didn't switch identities, just outfits. like they'd go to the bathroom and come back wearing each other's shirts. middle schoolers are fascinating creatures
It is a very good position to be in, to be a noble and to know an important secret. The base of the aristocracy’s power comes from secrets after all and knowing one that many others don’t means he holds a special power. A different power. An important power.
Baron Ramsey subtly pulls his collar away from his neck as he’s led down the long, ornate hall to the audience chamber. He can feel a bead of sweat just shy of his hairline and he hopes it doesn’t roll down his temple at the wrong moment. The knight leading him to the King and Queen has a hand on the silver hilt of his sword. He doesn’t look back at the Baron, but Baron Ramsey can feel his attention regardless. Like a flock of birds looking down from the trees as you pass underneath.
Knowing a secret is a very good thing, he reminds himself. He dabs away the bead of sweat a beat before the knight opens the doors the audience chamber. He most likely has only been called to discuss a new item the Queen wants. Something that he who spends so much time abroad could find for her. It is a common occurrence. That is why he takes pains to never let her find him at home.
“Baron David Ramsey,” the knight announces. He steps smartly to the side and bows without ever once looking at the occupants of the room. “Your majesties.”
Baron David Ramsey. His name curls inside of his chest and settles like a band around his lungs. When he was a boy, his father took him to meet the Queen and King. His father said it was only natural to feel anxious and frightened in their presence. Natural and right, even. But now he can feel the unnaturalness in it and he struggles to take the first step forward. He could be crushed by their attention alone.
gonna start keeping a suspiciously detailed hard-copy personal diary & drop numerous “offhand” hints providing valuable historical insight into mundane life in 21st century usa
dear diary, today i wanted to take the bus home (public transit is underfunded and unreliable) so i checked my phone (everyone carries a glowing rectangle with them at all times) but the transit schedules weren’t yet updated so i had to wait half an hour. when i arrived home i microwaved leftovers (we did not cook fresh food daily, despite year-round access to ingredients, heating, and refrigeration) and ate it while answering emails at midnight (work colonized free time)
@venus-ratt pointed out that Widow actually calls Hornet the child of Wyrm and Weaver, which is a line that I completely forgot about.
It doesn't change the core premise of the last comic (Lace not knowing that Wyrms were real, let alone one of Hornet's gene donors), and is likely me misunderstanding the situation altogether.
However, it also offered up a much funnier (and sadder) scenario.
I read Lace as one of those kids who was both neglected and raised in a high control environment. She's self-sufficient, but her knowledge of the world is inconsistent and once she's outside of her comfort zone she rapidly comes up against her incorrect assumptions. The tortured and potentially half-mad Widow is the only version Lace has ever known; she's likely never met any of the other First Children, was never told the details of their rebellion, and it never occurred to her to question Widow's physical condition.
(Also, Ghost beat Seth's records before Hornet did, and therefore claimed the Guardian Memento. They will wear it as a charm and somehow gain new magical abilities from it.)

Hornet: I assumed the truth of my heritage well known, at least among your silken allies. The Weaver ensnaring Bellhart acknowledged me as such.
Lace: What, Widow? She was unspooled. Nobody listened to her. She spouted all types of off-the-wall nonsense. One time, she told me I shouldn't complain about my... situation, because grubberflies reproduce by swallowing their own spawn. I had nightmares for weeks!
Lace: ...
Hornet: ....
Lace: NOPE. NO. SHUT UP.

Narration: Earlier...
Lace: Be on the lookout for the half-weaver.
Widow: What is the other half?
Lace: Pardon?
Widow: The half-spawn. What sired it?
Lace: Is that relevant?
Widow: I...
[SFX] Disjointed echoes of the Rune Harps: Flee, sisters. Flee until your stregth exhausts... We shall die, and wait, and pray, that one may come of silken strength enough to weave us free.
Widow: I cannot remember.

Pondering MLB actually trying to outlaw it and the only explanation would be if the players are catching the ball with their thicc cheeks, which makes me wonder more seriously if a baseball has to be caught specifically in a glove or just has to not touch the ground before it's under control. Like, if you dive and it ends up resting on your back, does that count as an out?
We genuinely as a society need to bring back awareness of 'Ms.' as a term of address because just this week I saw Ms. Piggy and an MS Paint tuna (it was a pun) both referred to as 'Miss'. 'Ms.' has kind of fallen off in recent years, I think partly because formality in speech has kind of fallen off in day-to-day life in general, and partly because of a whole bunch of things about the way feminism has developed since the 70s and how its priorities have shifted.
So! For those of you who haven't encountered this term of address before. Ms. is not short for 'Miss'. It's pronounced as Miz, and it was invented with the intention of giving women a respectful formal term (supposedly equivalent to Mr.) that says 'whether or not I'm married is none of your damn business'. And I think that's beautiful.

Someone consistently irked me the first bunch of times I heard them talk (because cubicles), and now hearing their voice pisses me off even when they say something that I wouldn't react to from someone else.
Bothers me when the distinction between Witch and Wizard is drawn according to gender. The Witch/Wizard distinction is one of class. Wizards live in towers and have cursed artifacts. Witches live in shacks and have crooked teeth.
Both witches and wizards can be evil, of course. But when a witch is evil they turn you into a frog. When a wizard is evil they try to tear a hole in reality or raise an undead army. You don't see witches doing that shit because they're working class.
The witch is looked down upon because they are competition to the hierarchical work of wizardry; they present an alternative to state monopoly on magic.
Absolutely. Witches perform folk magic--you'd never catch a wizard getting overly preoccupied with practical magic like soothing ulcers or curing the flu, but witches are always brewing up stuff for those kinds of reasons.
Magic is like programming. When it's seen as practical and tedious, it's "women's work." When it's seen as academic and intellectual, you get a huge salary and an audience with the king.
