like this really specific brand of unexamined cultural Christianity + anti-religion science fiction nerd personality + particular flavors of neurodivergence = apocalyptic tech cults dedicated to, somehow, both the establishment AND prevention of A(G)I. at least that's what it's been looking like to me, lmfao

it's weird because i first became aware of rationalists due to reading Unsong by Scott Siskind (Jewish!) in the 2010s. and the guy most people seem to agree is the "father" of modern rationalism is also Jewish (Yudkowsky). i don't know what Yudkowsky's deal is, but for me Siskind's book - despite all the kabbalistic connections - felt really disconnected from what i would usually describe as a Jewish philosophy or worldview, in a way i found actively off-putting (despite enjoying parts of it). i think there's something to be said for being steeped in US cultural Christianity even when you come from a Jewish family?

in any case if it isn't already clear, i think the absolute belief in a near-future malevolent machine intelligence that will either wipe out or "punish" humanity is the funniest possible flagship for a bunch of people who've named their movement after their ability to be "rational"

The Code Noir is a set of texts and decrees from the 17th-18th centuries, defining the conditions of slavery and the status of Black people in France. It is still technically in effect today, although technically void due to amendments and laws against slavery.
