āThere are two MLKs. There once was a man named Martin Luther King Jr. who actually lived and breathed. He was a radical who believed in the redistribution of wealth, argued for slave reparations and that wrote that moderate whites who didnāt speak out on racism were just as bad as the Ku Klux Klan. Seventy-five percent of Americans disapproved of that man when he was killed by a white supremacist in 1968. Then, there is the Martin Luther King Jr. that exists in the collective white memory. Through a complex combination of whitewashing, self-guilt and the intentional rewriting of history that absolves them of their hatred, they have painted a sanitized, impressionist portrait of a civil rights icon whose dreams were fulfilled by Americaās unwavering commitment to justice and equality. Out of whole cloth, they managed to fabricate a fantastic hologram of King that is ahistorical, but still ābased on a true story.ā Their Martin was a lover, not a fighter. They remember a socially conservative, respectable reconciler; not an anti-establishment revolutionary. And, for their sake, his doctrine of nonviolent resistance was eventually reduced to simple ānonviolence.ā This is the King they will remember this weekend.ā

u know that thing where an animals grow in a far off place and some idiot introduces him to a new habitat and it turns out its characteristics that help them in their own sometimes are too helpful in the new one and they become like an invasive species yeah thats the word i was missing anyway back to my point i think i saw a human version of that just now i was driving in tonights snow storm and i saw a man wearing a big ass cowboy hat to keep the snow off him and a bandit red bandana to keep it off his face and a big ass pancho to keep him warm and nice ass cowboy boots to keep his calves dry and he was prancing along while everyone on the road looked miserable and frozen solid and idk i guess the point im trying to make here is i feel like cowboys would have taken over russia if given the chance or something
As an Evolutionary Biologist, this is a roller-coaster from start to finish.
hot take but i think pain should be discrete and purposeful (āstop touching a hot stoveā and āstop bumping into furnitureā) and then it should stop when it is no longer communicating useful and actionable information. you may disagree but i think chronic pain is bad.
#chronic pain communicates information like āstop having shouldersā or āget rid of these kneesā#none of which is achievable really unfortunately (via @calamitys-child)

Any funky little bat facts, anything is good
mexican long-nosed bats are key pollinators for several species of cactus!
"how do they get the nectar out of the flower, though?" you ask. "maybe with a long tongue, like a butterfly?" well, that's plausible, but INCORRECT.
see, the cactus flowers are actually larger than the bat itself!
so it just kinda. crawls in there.
and in the process gets just SO covered with pollen. absolutely lost in the sauce.
which of course, they smear all over the flowers of the next cactus over when they repeat the process. isn't biology beautiful?
Powdered like a DONUT

I like how the collie has no issues escaping its leash like itās clear the only think keeping it in check is it iron will and strong moral compass.

okay iāll reblog that.
Watched a great talk today about web/technology accessibility, and the speaker pointed out that yes, accessibility is important for people with permanent disabilities, and we should definitely care about that. But also accessibility helps EVERYBODY, because everybody will, at some point in their lives, find themselves in situations that accessible technology can help with. Here are permanent, temporary, and situational disabilities that accessible technology can help with:
Remember that whether something is disabling or not depends on the situation, the environment, the technology, etc. Weāre ALL disabled at some point. It is important to support permanently disabled people, but it is also important to remember that accessibility helps us all!
Iāll just mention the irony quickly and do this:
[ID: A table of types of disability. Columns are labeled Permanent, Temporary, and Situational, in that order. Each example has an abstract human figure to represent the disability.
Touch: One Arm, Arm Injury, New Parent (holding a child in their arm)
See: Blind, Cataracts, Distracted Driver
Hear: Deaf, Ear Infection, Bartender (surrounded by noise)
Speak: Non-verbal, Laryngitis, Heavy Accent (wielding a sword, shield, and viking helmet)
End ID]
As someone who has personally had to take those calls, they do matter. It just doesnāt matter what you say in the call: the only way your calls actually reach the politician is a tally sheet of each call received on different topics. End of the day/week, the politician gets told āyou had X many calls about people wanting you to do this, Y many calls about people wanting you to do this, etc.ā
Individual calls matter little, but if they get tons of calls on one topic then they take it seriously. The example above was probably during a time where the office was flooded with so many calls at once that they took the phones off the hook, which actually means that calls are working especially well. When the phones are blowing up, everyone in the office notices.
The best call to your representative does not involve you making an impassioned and well-argued case, because youāre probably talking to an intern. The most effective call you can make takes 15 seconds: āI am from [place in your district] and I am very pissed about [topic].ā
OI. PEOPLE IN THE THREAD. CAN WE REBLOG THIS VERSION PLEASE. DON'T STOP MAKING CALLS.
But also as another person further up says, don't let your activism start and stop with phone calls either.
some parents are mad at turning red because they now had to explain periods to their sons, well, if more parents had explained periods to their sons when I was a child/young teen I might not have had to answer questions like ācanāt you hold it inā ādonāt you have an orgasm when you use a tamponā āisnāt [insert anything period related] unhygienicā
more parents should talk to their children about periods, not just their daughters, itās completely natural and not shameful
