These people went from lifting chips to pulling off some action movie shit
This is the most Chaotic Neutral thing I’ve ever seen.
Gustave Courbet, Le Sommeil,1866.
Le Sommeil [The Sleepers], which depicts two women entwined in a post-coital embrace, caused a stir when it was first shown in the 1870s. The police were called in, and the painting was not shown again until the 1980s. But its brief showing had an influence on a number of contemporary artists, and helped challenge the taboos associated with lesbian relationships. For modern audiences it’s a good reminder that people in the 19th century were not ignorant of lesbian relationships, as we tend to believe. And it’s pretty damn sexy, don’t you think?
They called the police on this lesbian painting.
The best part is, the lesbian embrace isn’t even the biggest thing that made the painting so controversial, it was the art style. People in the artistic community at the time were wholly familiar with sapphic relationships being portrayed in art, but were used to these scenes being portrayed in the ‘academic art’ style, which consisted of smooth, simplistic, idealised versions of the nude female form. This often went hand in hand with the depiction of Roman & Greek allegories to illustrate certain ideals (think Cabanel’s Birth of Venus). Courbet’s journey into realism was met by heavy critique from the academic movement, as the women he painted were, well, more realistic. Leaving in details such as the rolls of fat around the ribs acted as a blunt reminder to the audience that these were not euphoric goddesses caressing in ecstasy, but ordinary women having a nap together after making love. Other realist paintings suffered the same controversy, Manet’s Olympia is a perfect example, where the problem was not that the painting depicted a nude woman in an erotic pose, but the fact that she was just an ordinary courtesan, given an identity & portrayed in a place of power & control. Realism humanized the female form in art, & removed it from its previous role as a representation of the ideal.
So what disgusted people about the painting wasn’t so much that Le Sommeil depicted two women, but rather that it depicted two ‘real’ women.
Artist: So I painted a couple of lesbians in bed.
Men: Niiiiiiiiiice
Artist: They have cellulite
Men: I AM CALLING THE POLICE

Seeing people on social media who are all “idk I don’t know if I’d vote for this Democrat if they get the nomination” when the other guy is literally running concentration camps:
I just can’t do this again. I can’t do another 4 years of Tr*mp because y'all think a centrist is a bad as a dude that literally supports ethnic cleansing.

Throwback to my first Pride. 🌈
when your young padawan makes a good call
Went to the Aboriginal artifact exhibit in Chicago. And it’s interesting. How many blankets and masks and totem poles say ‘unknown source’, because every five seconds my mom would stop and point to something and say. “Pauline’s grandmother made that,” or, “That belongs to Mike’s family, I should call him” because. It’s all stolen
“These artifacts were excavated by archaeologists from a burial site in the 1970’s. The remains were returned for reinterment” Okay cool, cool cool. So you just, like. Dug up the grave of a respected family member, stripped them naked, mailed their body back to their family and kept everything they were lovingly put to rest in. Like a graverobbing bastard
Reminds me of the time when of the elders from my hometown started touching a totem pole in the Museum of Anthropology out at UBC and got yelled at by the staff, only to tell him that the pole had been stolen off of the front of her bighouse when she was ten years old.
Museum collectors did the equivalent of kidnapping a family member when they were away fishing.
Hey if it was the Field Museum, then just contact their repatriation staff and provide them with some proof and they’ll help to make sure they items are returned. A lot if the time, the reason it says unknown source is because it was stolen, but they never wrote down who it was stolen from. In recent years, they have been pushing to return as many stolen items as they can, but they need help in finding out who it belongs to. If there is anything you can do to help, then please contact them and help them
Yes, the graverobbing was horrible. It was blatant thievery. A lot of their artifacts are likely stolen. So help make sure that the museum can help return them. Here is the contact information for the repatriation staff members

Dude, I was having dinner with two lawyer friends (one is a public defender) the other night and they were pretty adamant about this. “Don’t ever talk to the police. Ever.” I was honestly really shocked because I was raised to be polite and helpful and obviously if I had nothing to hide I’d like to extend that courtesy to the police, but apparently they are very good at manipulating people of this exact disposition into very damaging situations even if they are innocent.
