"What did you make of it?" Skystripe asked as they returned across the prairie.
"Molestar seemed to think herself leader of every cat present," Pumastar observed.
"That's no surprise," Skystripe's whiskers twitched. "You did well, to inform her our numbers without letting her know how many are kits."
"Oh." Them agreeing on Pumastar's decisions as leader was rare, never mind Skystripe complimenting them.
"They were huge!" Havenpaw shivered. "Are all SoftClan cats that big?"
"Every cat's huge compared to you," Dashlake teased.
"I'm as big as you! I have been for moons!"
"Tempestpelt?" Skystripe asked, noticing his silence.
"Did you see?" he murmured. "Strikeclaw has a scratch on her nose, and Flashpaw was favoring a leg."
"So?" Skystripe batted a moth from her face. "Accidents happen in training. Or they ran off a fox."
"You don't find it odd Pouncepurr wasn't there?"
Skystripe flit a startled glance at Pumastar. "You think they had a battle?"
Tempestpelt weighed his response carefully. "I think they don't have a medicine cat." His Clanmates fell into a horrified silence. Matter-of-factly he went on, "Pouncepurr was always sickly. Being in the medicine den so often as a kit led her down the path of healers. If she didn't make it to safety in time, or breathed too much smoke...."
Skystripe gazed down at her moving paws as she thought aloud, "They may be in trouble. Molestar has always prided herself on her Clan's strength. Stonewhisker may not temper her the way Sedgefang did."
"Pouncepurr always claimed Molestar cares for her cats in her own way. She's been leader long enough to know injured cats catch no prey."
"Nor do they win fights," Pumastar put in. "We may have ourselves ample time of peace until she finds a new medicine cat."
"So long as you don't declare an assault," Tempestpelt reminded him.
"I wouldn't!" Pumastar glanced back at Dashlake and Havenpaw. "Three of us are kits."
Tempestpelt twitched his whiskers. He doubted Pumastar attacking unprovoked, and knew Skystripe to be skeptical of him attacking if provoked.
He turned his head at a flicker of movement. Beside him padded the flickering, intangible pelt of a StarClan cat. It turned its head to meet his gaze in approval, and as it vanished he recognized his apprentice, Shadepaw.
It's nuts how common it is to not allow children to be angry, even (especially) in households where adults are angry all the time. As a child I knew my own anger was unacceptable--not just expressing it outwardly but feeling it at all. So now as an adult my immediate reaction to my own anger is often to feel guilt instead of like. Noticing when someone is being rude or unfair or my boundaries are being violated or whatever. fucked up.
