Vinetangle itched to be out in the forest. The fog hanging in the trees promised a challenge of muffled sounds and limited sight. It would be like exploring DarkClan’s territory for the first time again! This would be Droppaw’s first time seeing the territory, and so she bade her paws to stay. Dakoda backed up a hasty step, looking about quickly. Lord Vash—the title shoved its way into his thoughts, required even within the privacy of his own mind—stood alone in the hall. Scarce was he without a tagalong, but there he was: staring at the rain hitting the glass. His gaze shifted, spotting something Dakoda hadn’t. He placed a sharp nail to the wall and a house spider crawled on. “You’re not killing it?” Dakoda asked without meaning to as Lord Vash lifted it nearer to the ceiling. Lord Vash didn’t appear surprised by Dakoda’s presence. “You’re not scared of something so small?” If he’d been with anyone—mostly anyone—else, Dakoda would have scoffed. What was he being taken for? “They’re disgusting.”

“Beats me.” Jakariel sat atop her bedding, one leg bouncing lightly.

She was in a bed. Noise had woken her. Someone moving nearby. Objects being picked up and set down at random. A voice without meaning, noise to fill the silence. Familiar. If she could focus. “Jakariel?” Fanari rasped, and coughed at how dry her throat was.

Terron gave him his full attention. Caedan never willingly brought up his life before Ferelden. Satisfied he had his audience, Caedan went on, “There were windows on the top three floors. Unguarded, of course. You’d be minding your business and someone would fall in front of you. If you were near enough you’d hear the splat.”

Ember’s hair was on fire. It was the midwife’s first thought when she caught, then almost dropped, the infant that fell into her hands. She’d been midwifing over fifty years, however, and her gnarled, wrinkled hands safely scooped the babe from the between the birthing mother’s legs and into her arms. The midwife gave the parents no-nonsense reminders of newborn care and said a prayer to Magran congratulating her for the safe delivery. She then left for the other side of town where by nightfall a non-divine human would be born.
