Day 31 - Shark Halloween

All this is to say that the fact that this octopus appears to be dreaming means one of two things. Either

a) dreaming is a very, very old thing indeed, going directly back to the Urbilaterian. This would mean that almost every animal, from insects to starfish to sea slugs to newts, is likely to have the ability to dream in some capacity or another (unless they have specifically lost it by evolutionary simplification).

or

b) dreaming evolved entirely independently in cephalopods when they developed greater intelligence. This would suggest, at least, that there’s something very fundamental about dreaming related to intelligence itself, which causes it to emerge independently when sufficient intelligence arises.

Thresher shark (fox shark)

This weirdly proportioned shark lives across all different kinds of oceans, but prefers tropical waters.

(Yes this weirdo actually exists)

As you can see, about half of their whole body length is literally just the the elongated part of their upper fin. The biggest of em can be up to 6m long, so that 3 m of pure fin.

They use this strange adaptation to hunt herrings and anchovies. How you ask ? By swing it forward in a whip-like fashion and incapacitating their prey, obviously :D

They're also one of the few sharks, that have been seen breaching the water and jumping high up in the air, using of course their tail to propel them forward (though I don't know why exactly they do that)

They are seen as a challenge to fishermen and hunted for their fins, meat and liver. Due to their long gestation period (they are slow to reproduce) their population can't handle heavy fishing pressure for long. As of right now, they are classified by the World Conservation Union as vulnerable for extinction.

their tail doesn't even need to directly come into contact with their prey to do damage — even just the force of the current made from the slap is enough to stun or kill
