I know this is my own post, but every single time this comes across my dash I am delighted. Every single time, I re-watch the video and laugh, and then scroll down and laugh more. What a truly excellent reblog chain.

People act like I'm just being an asshole but man the whole reason I'm so anal about hating gambling mechanics is because I've been down that road and lost a ton of money on games I just stopped playing eventually anyway and it SUCKS and the more you learn about dark pattern design the more you realize that this entire corner of the game industry is just fully focused on screwing vulnerable people out of their money and it's just evil, plain and simple. What do you want from me?? To promote this shit like every other streamer after knowing all that??? I will NOT be complicit in this shit. I'm gonna talk about how bad it is!!! You think that makes me an asshole?????

I studied game design and nothing disillusioned me like this one time I did an internship at a mobile game company because it was so obvious that the team only cared about how to screw as many people out of their money as possible. The only feedback I ever got for my system designs was "okay but how can we make it more addictive?" or "how can we get them to spend?" and shit like that. Nobody there cared about the game being fun. In their minds, a "good" game was a profitable and addictive one. I haven't been able to see these games the same way ever since. It was one of the big reasons I quit being a game designer. Dark pattern design doesn't happen by accident. They know what they're doing. They want to fuck you over.

Knowingly hijacking someone's reward pathways to weaponize them for profit is unambiguously bad. They are manipulating people on purpose with the sole intent of triggering maladaptive & addictive behaviors. They want you to financially harm yourself to enrich them instead. Being a Hater™ is the obvious moral position here.

A underrated moral panic is the UK government's deep and enduring hatred of ninjitsu. From the days of video nastys banning nunchucks and shuriken from the media but not touching depictions of any type of weapon people actually have or use to Keir Starmer promising to ban ninja swords to solve knife crime, famously committed primarily with replica Japanese swords, forever. There are still presumably people with ASBOs for pretending to be Naruto in 2004, when Tony Blair executed a raid on the servers hosting Real Ultimate Power and declared once and for all that Britain will not stand for dishonorable stealth combat no matter how many shadow warriors are sent by Brussels

Remembering the British film censor who despised nunchucks to such a degree he would shred scenes to pieces to cover up a image of them on a poster in the background. It literally wasn't even prompted by anything. He wasn't even worried about kids hurting themselves trying them out, like he did, he just thought Britain was due for a massive wave of ninja crime and he heroically stopped it

controversial stance but i do wish i could live forever. i certainly live like i'm going to live forever. i take my time. realistically however my lifespan is dreadfully limited and there are things i've "been meaning to do" that i will never get around to. the Emoji Movie came out almost 10 years ago. in all that time on any random day i could've decided to sit down and watch it, and i did not. how many more decades will slip by like this? conceivably, it could be all the decades i have left. watching the Emoji Movie would not be, after all, a crucial use of my time. much better things to do. i could easily postpone it over and over and over until my final breath where it may not even register to me that i never did watch the Emoji Movie. no great loss, certainly; and yet i find myself intrigued by Patrick Stewart's involvement
