✧ Broken ribs suck. You don’t just “walk it off.” Breathing hurts. Laughing hurts. Existing hurts. Characters with rib injuries won’t be doing heroic sprints.

✧ Concussions aren’t instant naps. Dazed vision, nausea, dizziness, maybe even personality changes, but they’re not going to collapse neatly like in the movies.

✧ Blood loss is sneaky. It’s not just about dramatic pools of blood. It’s dizziness, confusion, and the body getting cold as circulation tanks.

✧ Adrenaline lies. Someone can take a serious injury and not feel it until the fight’s over. That “I didn’t realize I was bleeding until later” trope? Very real.

✧ Twisted ankles are brutal. One bad step and suddenly running is off the table. Even walking hurts like hell. Perfect way to ground a chase scene.

✧ Burns linger. Even small burns hurt more than most people expect. Blisters, infection risk, constant pain, it’s not just a cool scar later.

✧ Dislocated shoulders = useless arm. Characters can’t keep swinging a sword or firing a gun. They’re basically fighting one-armed until it’s fixed.

✧ Shock is a thing. Pale skin, trembling, rapid heartbeat, and eventually disorientation. A character might not even realize how bad their wound is.

✧ Stitches aren’t magic. Getting sewn up is painful and recovery takes time. They’re not instantly battle-ready after a needle and thread.

And then suddenly, all at once, Caretaker notices Whumpee somehow feels heavier. Caretaker looks down at Whumpee just as Whumpee’s arms fall limp and their head flops backwards. And Caretaker has to drop to the ground both out of shock and panic as well as to check that their precious cargo is still breathing and to recollect Whumpees deadweight limbs to their chest before they stand back up

Jack is a musician who returns home where he needs to spin magic in his music. The downside is that anyone who uses magic on the island suffers from side effects. Jack suffers headaches, pain in his hands, nosebleeds, and passes out all over the place. People are constantly worried about his health & the dude likes to push himself.

Jacob is pretty much a (competent) damsel in distress throughout at least 3 books detailing his adventures. He is stabbed through the shoulder, stung by scorpions and cursed, enduring painful episodes, he's shipwrecked, bitten by wolves, poisoned etc.

The Curse of Chalion (Lois McMaster Bujold) - Adult Historical setting Fantasy

Traumatized Cazaril (Caz) is an ex soldier and ex slave who bears whipping scars that still bother him when he returns to his hometown. All he wants is to rest, but instead, he falls off a horse, tries to sacrifice himself, ends up cursed, haunted and in chronic pain, is ambushed, run through with a sword and everyone is concerned about his health.

A Deadly Vow (J.D. Ronan) - Dark Fantasy Romance

Kiehi is used by his father as a source of magic, being bled often. Recently the wounds have stopped healing, and he's suffering throughout the book from the most recent one. He gets nauseous, bleeds through bandages, and his close friends and family are worried about him. He also drinks to hide the pain.

Phoenix Unbound (Grace Draven) - Adult Fantasy Romance

Azarion is a gladiator slave, also used as an unwilling sex toy. He escapes with injuries that bother him almost the entire journey home. He gets wounded in a fight later in the book and we get the aftermath of that.

A Wilderness of Glass (Grace Draven) - Adult Fantasy Romance Novella

Brida finds injured Ahtin, a merman clinging to life on the rocks one morning after a storm, together with a mermaid child. She works tirelessly to save them both in the first half of this short and sweet novella.

A Sellsword's Compassion ( The 7 Virtues series by Jacob Peppers) - Epic Fantasy

Aaron has a love/hate relationship with crossbows and knives. He's throttled, shot in the leg, stabbed, collapses and passes out in someone's arms multiple times, we get aftercare during which one time he wakes up thinking he's being attacked but really it's just an old lady helping him drink tea, fights with the injuries, is stabbed and poisoned, and that's just the first book.

The Last Eternal (series by Jacob Peppers) - Epic Fantasy

"Youngest" has been running from evil for 100 years. He's constantly on the run, and gets injured in the beginning of the 1st book. Meets a family who helps him and he basically adopts them and ends up protecting them with his life. Throughout the 3 short books they also watch out for him after he gets shot with a crossbow and after he cracks his head open on a mountain. Our dude also regularly gets possessed by ghosts & it never feels good which gets him some worried looks from the family.

The Snows of Windroven ( novella by Jeffe Kennedy) - Romantic adult fantasy

We first meet Ash in "The Tears of The Rose". He is an ex-convict, former priest and current unofficial consort of Ami, the queen. He's also heavily scarred as a result of 10 years in prison, and feels unworthy of his love interest. He's very vulnerable in this novella, mentally as well as physically after he's injured in an attack and (because he is a healer but can't heal himself) spends good chapters in bed, in and out of consciousness with a fever.

A Momentary Marriage (Candace Camp) - Historical Romance with a Mystery
