Year of the Reaper by Makiia Lucier - YA
Cas is a former prisoner and plague survivor with an aversion to touch who has returned home to his brother. He has scars from being chained and can see and talk to ghosts. He is knocked out a couple of times, causing dizziness, as well as chained up, which triggers ptsd. At the end he is also stabbed while protecting someone. In general he's a very whumpy character.
In Deeper Waters by Ft Lukens - YA Adventure Fantasy a rec by the lovely 🦑 Anon
"Our main character, Tal, is a prince who has the ability of fire control, but has to hide it due to his corrupt grandfather who had the same power before he died. In the book, he has to go on a coming of age tour, only to be kidnapped and forced to be a prisoner for an enemy. He is forced to do backbreaking work, and weakens to the point of near death. However, he survives his time on the ship, only to end up feverish and sickly. Then, he is forced to travel on horseback with his bf for days in order to get back home. His boyfriend is also a merman but that’s a whole different can of worms."
The Traitor God (Cameron Johnston series Age of Tyranny) - Grimdark Fantasy
Edrin has been on the run for 10 years, with the gift of mind control. He gets seasickness and regular painful visions, making for some whumpy scenarios. He gets clawed up and has panic attacks from the claustrophobia, gets rock shrapnel in his leg and exhausts himself trying to save his friend. Is rescued and kept in chains and drugged up, magic blocked, weak and the book doesn't let up until he's tortured at the end which includes having a rib forcibly removed and other long-term injuries that get highlighted in the second book.
The Princess will Save You by Sarah Henning (Kingdoms of Sand and Sky Trilogy) - YA Fantasy Romance
Luca, a stable boy who is close to the princess is kidnapped, beaten, rescued, poisoned, captured again, then has his chest cut open and tortured. His wounds bother him up though the second book.
Bound by Ravens by Jesikah Sundin - adventure fantasy romance
Finn is a thief elf who is cursed, injured, and cursed again. He gets progressively sicker throughout the book, as noted by himself as well as his partner.
Red Rider by Kate Avery Ellison - adventure fantasy (bit of romance, mostly whump)
Vixor is a werewolf who escorts werewolf hater Meredith to the capital. They are attacked & Vixor ends up injured. Meredith debates letting him die but has plans in the capital and doesn't know how to get there so she rescues him. Like literally because Vixor does nothing but struggle, stumble, wheeze, shiver, faint, almost faint, bleed and occasionally save Meredith's life as they make their way to the capital.
Book 5 has Meredith rescuing Vixor AGAIN from enduring torture in a prison and we get to see them on the run and in hiding while Vixor continuously passes out, is weak or runs a fever.
The Flame and the Blade (Meredith Hart) - adventure romantasy
Vethe is a wildmage who toward the end of the book overuses his magic and it ends up hurting him, sending him into mage fever which few survive from. Lyria, the guard hired to escort him on his travels, does the impossible to keep him alive and deliver him to someone who can help him.
The Path of Flames (Chronicles of The Black Gate - Phil Tucker) - 5 book series epic fantasy
Asho is one of 6 POV characters. A former slave turned squire turned knight turned sorcerer, his magic is one that can't be used without immediately getting sick, unless he has someone to take up most of the "taint". In the first book he returns home injured and exhausted to bear some bad news. During all 5 books he ends up very sick after most battles since he almost always overuses his magic. A few of the other POVs get whumped as well.
Winter Be My Shield (Children of the Black Sun series) by Jo Spurrier - adult fantasy (grimdark?)
Isidro was captured by blood mages and tortured for a week. They performed rituals, burned his back and broke his arm in many many places. On the way to get executed he is rescued by his foster brother but almost drowns in a frozen river and develops pneumonia. He spends 80% of the first book in pain, ill and weak and everyone tries to get him to rest, but life has other plans and there are many incidents causing him setback (battles, travel, ptsd).
Beware of s**c*dal thoughts trigger for this one.
