The sign many left wingers have subconsciously accepted moving right on covid and embraced lowering public health standards is when people seem to think “masks should be mandatory in healthcare settings /airplanes “ is somehow a radical position to take in an ongoing pandemic
its so fucking weird because "masks in healthcare" should be the default all of the time. Doctors and nurses are literally employed to go from sick person to sick person, treating immunocompromised people especially often.
It should have been mandatory BEFORE covid
Look, as the former caregiver for my post-stroke mother with aphasia (inability to speak, very limited ability to understand spoken speech) there are COSTS to masking.
Not money, but life, quality of life.
My mother communicated almost entirely in facial expressions! What words she said were whispered because she wad physically incapable of raising her voice. She and I wore masks in public at the height of the pandemic and it took away her ability to communicate. She lost the ability to interact with anyone but me, because I was the only one whose face she saw, who saw her face. Good thing I was NOT an abusive asshole, because communicating with health care providers is how most elder abuse is disclosed.
A speech therapist cannot wear a mask while working. "Watch my mouth" was an established sign--tapping your lips with two fingers--because seeing how a word is formed is key to reproducing it.
Children and the elderly with dementia experience more distress and confusion in medical situations if they cannot see the faces of their healthcare providers. Medical PTSD is worsened.
I emphatically and vocally supported masking from 2020 until well after the vaccine was widely available, because the benefits of masking were worth the cost--even the cost to people like my mother. But unless you can show me evidence that staff to patient transmission is a significant risk within medical facilities today, I can no longer support it.
My mother died almost two years ago without ever getting Covid. But her mental health and acuity deteriorated rapidly during masking and lockdown.
First of all I am very sorry for your loss and I acknowledge that there are disabilities or conditions that can make masking not an option for some people such as your mom. In cases like those then yeah- masking may not be possible but clean air legislation and sick leave are other policy options to reduce spread of covid. A speech therapist who works with children could have an office with high quality air filtration and a strict sickness policy for an example.
But that’s not an excuse for engaging in covid minimization such as “covid is endemic not a pandemic “ and “staff to patient transmission is not a significant risk “ (it is. I see stories frequently in CC circles of people’s elderly parents contracting covid in a hospital and even dying) but anecdotal evidence isn’t data so here
Here’s a study showing hospital acquired covid infections hindered recovery
And another
Please look into research on hospital acquired infections in general- not just for covid 19. It’s a significant issue.
I know people have trauma from early covid days but kindly that’s simply not an excuse for covid denial. I have been isolated for 4 years with severe long covid I have lost my job and my life to this disease and reinfection could easily render me worse to the point of becoming bedbound. Millions of people have post covid complications and the science on covid is very clear that catching it repeatedly is not safe and we don’t have the longitudinal data on what problems we might have in 20 years because covid is a new virus.
Unless you can procure a study suggesting the harms of not seeing a providers face outweigh the risks of long term damage from covid your argument is shaky.
Again I am very sorry for your loss. There are no simple or perfect solutions but making the world more accessible to everyone is important. I wont accept being kicked out of the planet because I am vulnerable to covid and you should not either.
it has become so normalized to completely ignore nonbinary people in conversations about trans community as a whole, to the point where people react with active hostility if you bring them up.
if you point out how "trans women and men" isn't an adequate synonym to "trans people", you are nitpicking the wording. if you bring up how most issues harming binary trans people are affecting nonbinary people to the same degree, you are derailing, but at the same time if you "make your own post" binary people won't engage with it. and they for sure won't try to talk about nonbinary people themselves at all. we are the ones who are always expected to compromise, to stay quiet so "real" trans people can talk, to make sure binary people aren't threatened by us.
you have to be nicer to nonbinary transfems and that's literally the bare minimum
maybe just like. consider us at all please
@ fic authors what do you personally consider a successful fic? What’s the bar?
actually writing the fic down

female-presenting vitruvian
i appreciate the amount of people reblogging this despite me not really tagging this at all. im glad many of people feel the same anger i do.
Being a writer is more about googling words to make sure they absolutely mean what you always assumed they meant than simply writing.
Abelard voice: "Yuri? On MY Voidship??"
Love those two. Want them to kiss 👌
do you ever start writing a comment on the internet and then think “oh what the fuck am i going on about” and delete it
I also enjoy writing an entire paragraph, thinking "you know, I don't actually need to be involved in this conversation," and deleting it
watching massive franchises bomb at the box office while Backrooms has made $212 million on a $10 million initial budget has brought me hope for the future of cinema
audiences do NOT want Star Wars slop, audiences want a movie made by a guy who really wanted to make a movie

First art of 2026 ✨
what would I do without my emotional support piles of random shit
sometimes i think love triangles should be resolved by polyamory but badly like everyone’s still mad
my mutual will post “i just blocked one of my mutuals” and i’ll be reading it on my own dash with my own eyes directly from their blog thinking “it was probably me………….😔”
you have to forgive the printer because it's one of the most machine-ass machines we interact with on a day to day basis. that thing says kerchunk. hardly anything says kerchunk these days. you can't get mad at her when she kerchunks up a little.
Crazy that tech has gotten so bad that we're doing printer forgiveness now

Hold up. Computer. Zoom. Enhance
What the goddamn?
abandonware should be public domain. force companies to actively support and provide products if they don't wanna lose the rights to them
Game companies hate emulation, but none of them seem to understand that a lot of us would just buy ROMs from them directly if we could. I don't want a fifth remake of Final Fantasy IV, I want to pay five bucks for the 3MB file you already made bank with thirty years ago. Nobody who wants to play something for the purpose of retro gaming is going to consider a $40 remake as the alternative option, and we're certainly not going to let the original dissappear. They're crying about opportunity cost for a product they're not even selling.
op i know you're probably talking about like, video games, etc, but this is also critical for research science - my lab has so much abandonware, either because the company's out of business, or the company decided to not maintain it, and it's a fucking nightmare. we have two windows 95 computers that are CRITICAL for performing experiments/data analysis because the software needed is abandonware. one of the main roles for a guy in my lab is to maintain these little dinosaurs because if they go out, we lose access to ~20 years of raw data for research. part of why is that these companies also make their own file types, and make it difficult-to-impossible to convert those file types without their specific software. by habit, i convert all research files to more generic versions (txt, pdf, tif, etc) so that i minimize risk of losing my shit, but some stuff can't be converted.
for example, we have a microscope that is perfectly functional, good microscope, but its software is abandonware because the company refused to maintain it. the company is still in business, still makes essentially the exact same software, but they made all of the old tech incompatible with new software to force people to buy the new microscope tech. it would cost a quarter million dollars to replace this microscope. this perfectly good microscope.
so like, i know a lot of people look at the original post here and go "well op just wants old video games to play" (which is valid! games companies should not be able to push shit to abandonware and then close it off) but also this is critical for like. biomedical research. if y'all had any idea how much basic infrastructure built on science relies on shit that is technically abandonware, you would probably be horrified.
#there is so much abandonware just...out there being used and carefully maintained#because nothing quite replicates the functionality
