distressing yet poetic that the Door to Hell is located in a country with one of the most restrictive visa policies in the world. imagine a magic portal to a kickass demonic dimension opened, but you had to cross the world, evade the border guards, and break into a whole ass country just to access it. now THAT is a QUEST.
anyway gimme a story about a demon trying to get home to hell but she keeps getting foiled by immigration control
oh, the Door To Hell aka the Darvaza gas crater is a real place in Turkmenistan fyi. yes that really is its colloquial name. for uh, self-evident reasons:
it's a natural gas crater formed by a collapsed cavern. it's been burning for over 50 years!
Gaud you forgot the best part which is that the dictator of Turkmenistan did donuts next to it to prove he was alive
I mean shit, dude's living it up you gotta give him that
[Freeze frame in the middle of an amazingly wild chase scene of some poor soggy bastard getting chased by an enraged crowd]
"Yep, that's me. You're probably wondering what's going on, and how I got into this situation in the first place."
[The stop unfreezes for a few seconds as this terrified target takes a few more desperate running steps, pausing again just as someone is about to grab his ankle]
"Well, the truth is, I still actually don't know what this was about. But I do know how I got here: I can never resist an angry mob. Now watch me get this fucker."
[the seizing hand grabs the runner by the ankle, he falls down and proceeds to get unceremoniously beaten to death. The protagonist brushes the dust off their clothes and the rest of the movie continues normally. The killing at the beginning scene is never mentioned again.]
Look I know this is a scientific publication but you don’t understand— we need to include milk and cookies in the photo. We have to. Otherwise the science suffers
Religion in fantasy worlds: Everyone believes the exact same things about Green Nature Goddess and has official rituals for her that are the same everywhere
Religion irl: Technically it’s heresy for me to worship this skeleton but my spiritual advisor said that it’s legit so I’m gonna keep giving it offerings of yogurt
Religion in fantasy worlds: We’ve gotta pour water over this statue or else the god will get angry
Religion irl: We’ve gotta pour water over this statue? Why? Idk man that’s just what you do. Just do it alright.
Religion in fantasy worlds: These are the rules. The rules are law. Nobody can break the rules.
Religion irl: Okay you say that there are “rules” but how exactly are we defining “rules” here? Like is a suggestion a rule? How are we defining suggestion? No come back. Listen. Are we going by nuance in the original language or are translations fine or-
High control religions/cults recruiting in fantasy worlds: Join us! For we shall all eat the moon! This is a legitimate position to have!
High control religions/cults recruiting irl: We have free snacks. That shirt looks sooo cute on you btw. What, you heard that we wanna eat the moon? The media is always telling lies about us you know. We may have some unorthodox opinions about the moon but, tell you what. Come get some snacks, make some new friends, maybe chat about the moon a bit. See what you think. We’ve got pizza.
Religions in fantasy worlds: We must make a sacrifice to appease the gods! *draws up a sacrifice circle and completely destroys the sacrifice*
Religions irl: We must make a sacrifice to appease the gods! *has a communal barbecue*
you can say Christianity if you mean Christianity
No I don’t actually. You’ll notice that I referenced sacrifice here. Christianity doesn’t generally practice sacrifice.
In order my inspirations were things I’ve seen that Catholics, Buddhists, Jews, Scientologists, and many traditional local religions do that are referenced in research that I’ve done or people who practice those religions in the modern day have actually told me about something that they or their families do personally.
In fact I have Hmong friends whose families still do animal sacrifice for their own personal traditions. They sacrifice chickens, spill the blood in a specific way, and eat the animal afterwards.
As a Christian myself I’ll remind you that religion does not automatically equal Christianity. And in fact that sort of assumption is sort of what annoys me about fantasy religions. I have my faith but I also have an interest in world religions in general and human spirituality in fantasy media is often just completely flattened out to being a misunderstanding of Christianity or a satanic panic view of satanism sloppily copy pasted over a misunderstanding of how paganism or spiritualism works.
Also re: the water statue one:
"How did this tradition get started? I'll tell you: .......I don't know. But it's a tradition." --Tevye, Fiddler on the Roof, aka an extremely not-Christian story
I've seen three kinds of sacrifice. Maybe a 4th,but it's less religous.
"Let's ritualistically kill this animal for *reasons* and then feed the meat to our family/community."
"Let's have a feast, this specific animal we ritualistically kill can only be eaten by the holy leaders, but we're feeding everyone brcause there's more than one animal."
"Let's prepare an extra plate of food and leave it out for the focus of our beleifs." and then at the end of the night/celebration the food is either thrown away or left to nature, based on where they are and what the food is.
And the not really religous one: "Pour one out for the homies." which could be considered a form of ancestor worship, but that's stretching it to a lot of people.
I know of a fourth, in the Palo Mayombe Cuban-African-diaspora religion:
"This sacred cauldron, the nganga, can help me perform acts of magic, and to keep its power it must occasionally be fed with the blood of animal sacrifice."
I first learned about it from a crime podcast because no matter what the subject there's always gotta be That One Guy who goes "do you know what this needs? Murder," but most practitioners use the nganga for healing or protective magic. I'm not sure what happens to the bodies of the animals, but I know the blood is poured into the nganga and remains there.
Pouring one out for the homies is actually a form of libation and has historically been pretty common. If you read the Iliad for example there’s a scene where Achilles is praying and as he does so he takes out a dedicated sacred wine cup and uses it to pour libations on the ground. Pouring alcoholic drinks or oil out onto the ground or pouring them over sacred alters or graves as an offering to gods or to the dead is a pretty common ritual historically.
There’s actually a little bit of debate in modern Christianity about if libations should be allowed because ritual sacrifice isn’t really allowed but in general people don’t care about you pouring one out for your homies.
In any case it’s an extremely ancient practice.

Hilarious to know Aragorn and Bilbo were friends before the Fellowship events because it casts a whole new light on him chasing down the orcs that kidnapped Merry and Pippin. Like sure he would have done it anyway because of brotherhood and honor and all that but most importantly those two little hobbits grew up listening to Bilbo's stories and stealing his pies. If I had to choose between going back to tell Bilbo I lost his little cousin and his best friend or running for eight straight days and nights you bet your ass I'd already be halfway to Isengard. Aragorn's survival instinct told him it's death by asthma attack or death by Bilbo and he chose correctly
In The Road to El Dorado there is only really one inexplicable thing within the plot. Miguel and Tulio plausibly bluff their way through or slip out of most situations. However, I’d never figured out why the volcano actually stops erupting when Tulio commands it.
The conclusion I finally came up with is that the actual gods were watching their big entrance go down, and thought “oh, this’ll be hilarious”
theres a lot of evidence throughout the movie to say that the armadillo (whose name is bibo) is a god.
they first find him in the jungle, where an armadillo has no business being
they find the entrance to the city, while being followed by him
he is present when the volcano starts to erupt (previous concept art also showed him in the background actually stopping the eruption)
miguel and tulio sucked ass at the ball game, so they used Bibo as a ball. He ricocheted himself all over the place and defied physics to get into the hoop every time
they come up with the flood plan to stop cortez when bibo pushed a glass over in front of them
YOUR TELLING ME THEY USED GOD AS A BASKETBALL?
I actually think the god wanted to be a basketball as a form of enrichment but yeah
contrary to popular belief i think calvin's adhd is, funnily enough, medicated. he takes extended release ritalin every morning alongside his chocolate frosted sugar bombs. this is because he appreciates being more easily able to focus on his various Schemes, Projects, and Machinations while more effectively ignoring schoolwork
calvin's dad pulling up to the house and seeing the whole driveway covered in a (completed) snowman recreation of the entire terracotta army and he takes a deep breath and greets calvin's mom with "i see calvin remembered his methylphenidate today"
There is another way

I have a very funny story to share but it requires some context: so, you guys know how Suez was hit by a magnitude 5.0 earthquake yesterday (So far there were no casualties reported, thankfully) and the shockwaves were felt all over Egypt, right? Now, me and my entire family are from Brazil, which is a country that experiences no seismic activity whatsoever, but my dad is currently living in Cairo for work.
With that in mind: my dad was sleeping last night and was woken up by his bed shaking and his closet doors swinging open on their own and his first, immediate thought was “Holy shit, it’s a poltergeist!” and the way his half-asleep brain decided to deal with the situation was by screaming “FUCK OFF GHOST!!! GET OUT OF MY HOUSE BITCH!!!” at the top of his lungs.
The way I found out about it was via my mom getting a text message from my dad and coming into my room running in a panic telling me about the earthquake only for him to finish typing out his story about valiantly standing his ground against the poltergeist, which made her start laughing so hard she was unable to tell me anything at all for the next couple of minutes.
Old News, but I do love how Ukrainians looked at this flat packed cardboard drone invented in Australia to deliver medical supplies to hard to reach places, and went "drone? flat packed? hard to reach places?... I'll take everything you have"
Ukraine is using Australian-made cardboard drones which are light, cheap and easy to transport. They've also proved to be highly effective a
Sometimes paper wins
beats rock
Especially with the preferred Ukrainian mod... Crammed full of explosives instead of medical supplies
God I love Ukraine, and Australia, what a brilliant innovation
I had an idea for a traveling photo stand with Magnus. Now I can have this man explain the world to me and his sons
Hilariously funny that they let the guy known for wandering off without warning to look at birds was allowed to do this
#famously few birds in space#probably the safest place to take him
genuinely i don’t think it’s possible to easily explain the explicit part of online friendships to people who don’t Understand. i don’t mean like, explicit in the sense of “oh you’re sexting” or whatever. no. i mean when you and your friend start gleefully making up explicit sexual scenarios for your shared blorbos and you get giddier and giddier as you add more detail and you’ll be grinning at your screen as you type away at mach speeds. and it’s entirely nonsexual in an interpersonal sense, you’re not really getting Into it, but ohhhhh it’s soooooo fun and satisfying. and you can NEVER tell someone who doesn’t also do this that your mood is actively improved like fivefold because you and your friend played Sexual Tuoys together because they’ll go “what the FUCK.”

That largely depends on the shuttle you're using.
