This is a small detail from a devotional altarpiece made by the hospital nuns in Mechelen in the 16th century... These little "enclosed gardens" or "besloten hofjes" like they are called in dutch are made with all sorts of precious decorations. Goldthread, silverthread, flowers made from parchment, crystals, little rolls with prayers, wooden figures and so on. I can't start to imagine how they made all of this.
