Saint Francis of Assisi, with scenes from his life, depicted on an altarpice at the Church of San Francesco in Pescia, Italy. The painting in tempera on wood is attributed to Bonaventura Berlinghieri, and was completed in 1235, about ten years after the death of Francis. In several of the panels he is shown wearing the knotted cinturón that has loaned its name to these beautiful flowers.
