hi i want to talk about the blatant inequality that the new gender rules of hockey USA may cause. and how this may affect the future of womens hockey.
released on april 1st of this year, usa hockey has released a policy stating that all leagues and teams under it's governance must restrict players to their assigned sex based team (excluding coed leagues and teams). this is not only incredibly disruptive to just trans athletes, but moreso female athletes
as you probably know, hockey is a predominantly male sport, so most local and smaller teams are more likely to be all-male teams. in the past, girls have been able to get around this by joining male teams as a female, playing the same game.
this is no longer possible, and female athletes, even beer league or low level leagues, are restricted to teams, leagues and games that are either female only, or coed. both of which are hard to find and usually are only low level--meaning it restricts a lot of girls and women from playing at a higher level.
most olympic level or professional hockey players in the PWHL were able to reach their level via playing in boys leagues and teams, because girls teams weren't available. with this new policy, it could be harder than ever before for girls to play and access hockey.
despite girls hockey growing exponentially in the past couple of years, this may prove to be a bigger challenge for girls than any actual trans athletes. this ban not arguably harms more athletes
the policy's an act of hostility towards women's sports and gender equality in sports. it may not explicitly state that it will put such barring limitations on women, but it does and will.
some notable players who played in boys sports:
abby roque (olympian and pwhl player): played in boys teams for her childhood, and was on her highschool's men's hockey team as the only girl. she also was the only freshman to make varsity hockey, and was alternate captain her senior year.
manon rheaume: played in boys hockey for her youth, also was the first and only woman to play in the NHL
megan keller (golden goal in milano-cortina 26, gold medal olympian, pwhl player): played in boys leagues in her youth as there weren't enough girls teams in her area
caroline harvey (the overall first draft in the 2026 pwhl draft): played boys hockey in her youth, also the first woman to ever practice with an NHL team
marie-philip poulin ("captain clutch", three-time gold winning olympian and regarded as the best hockey player in the world, captain of team canada and the victoire, pwhl player): grew up playing hockey in boys teams.
other notable people: renata fast, erin ambrose, kendall coyne schofield, taylor heise, brianne jenner, blayre turnbull, a lot more!!
this video has been the last hinge holding me together for weeks now. I need to watch it once a day or I'll start disintegrating

"But AI can't do your job. It can help you do your job, but that doesn't mean it's going to save anyone money. Take radiology: there's some evidence that AIs can sometimes identify solid-mass tumors that some radiologists miss, and look, I've got cancer. Thankfully, it's very treatable, but I've got an interest in radiology being as reliable and accurate as possible. If my Kaiser hospital bought some AI radiology tools and told its radiologists: "Hey folks, here's the deal. Today, you're processing about 100 x-rays per day. From now on, we're going to get an instantaneous second opinion from the AI, and if the AI thinks you've missed a tumor, we want you to go back and have another look, even if that means you're only processing 98 x-rays per day. That's fine, we just care about finding all those tumors." If that's what they said, I'd be delighted. But no one is investing hundreds of billions in AI companies because they think AI will make radiology more expensive, not even if that also makes radiology more accurate. The market's bet on AI is that an AI salesman will visit the CEO of Kaiser and make this pitch: "Look, you fire 9/10s of your radiologists, saving $20m/year, you give us $10m/year, and you net $10m/year, and the remaining radiologists' job will be to oversee the diagnoses the AI makes at superhuman speed, and somehow remain vigilant as they do so, despite the fact that the AI is usually right, except when it's catastrophically wrong. "And if the AI misses a tumor, this will be the human radiologist's fault, because they are the 'human in the loop.' It's their signature on the diagnosis." This is a reverse centaur, and it's a specific kind of reverse-centaur: it's what Dan Davies calls an "accountability sink." The radiologist's job isn't really to oversee the AI's work, it's to take the blame for the AI's mistakes. This is another key to understanding – and thus deflating – the AI bubble. The AI can't do your job, but an AI salesman can convince your boss to fire you and replace you with an AI that can't do your job. This is key because it helps us build the kinds of coalitions that will be successful in the fight against the AI bubble." - Cory Doctorow, The Reverse Centaur’s Guide to Criticizing AI

To you, is your romantic partner (pretend you have one + you like it) the person you care about most/hope to care about most in your life after the relationship has progressed?
To you, is your romantic partner (pretend you have one + you like it) the person you care about most/hope to care about most in your life after the relationship has progressed?
Yes
No
I don't agree with this as worded, but I may agree with the sentiment? My partner is certainly *one* of the people who I care about the most, but not the only one: there are multiple people for whom I care deeply, and there's no strict hierarchy among them. (Also, the presumption that someone only has 1 romantic partner is ehhhh)
Should "beforenoon" become a word?
(I find it disturbing that the english language has a word for afternoon but not for the opposite, this is clearly a GAPING linguistic hole. English should follow the example of other languages and use beforenoon)
Should "beforenoon" become a word?
Yes
No
No, “morning” doesn’t count. “Morning” is equivalent to “evening.”
“Afternoon” and “evening” are only normalized as separate times because we have separate words for them.
There’s no reason to not have a separate word for the time between sunrise and noon except that we don’t have one. I never thought about it before.
Either we should have both “afternoon” and “forenoon” or we should have neither. Why do we only have one?
Language is interesting
Huh - I'd say morning is equivalent of afternoon, and if you really wanted to split it up, we should have a new word for very early morning. I think of anywhere before 9 as early morning, and 9-12 as "morning proper", as it were!
More from that one post
I think those fancomics where Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes is transgender are cute and fun but I also think it's a deep misunderstanding of Calvin's character to think he would transition into a heterosexual normie who goes to her high school reunion. That girl would have neopronouns and fang implants
Adult Calvin is a tattoo artist named Panthera who is the bassist in a terrible metal band called Captain Napalm and Hobbes helps do faer E injections
I know it's like 2 weeks too late to change it but I'm so mad I didn't realize that the band would obviously be called "Get Rid Of Slimy GirlS". I walk the road of shame
History and Conspiratorial Thinking
I'm not sure whether this is primarily a rant or a warning or a PSA, but one thing I've been seeing a lot of in the summer courses I'm teaching is conspiratorial thinking that flies, bafflingly, in the face of the facts.
My students (presuming this isn't an LLM thing that I haven't figured out yet) will often write, in the style of a YouTube clickbait headline, about how sad it is that so many voices are LOST TO HISTORY because NO ONE THOUGHT THEM WORTHY OF RECORDING.
And, like, on the one hand, yeah, probably 99.9% of humanity throughout history has gone through life without having their voices directly recorded. And the whole "Can the Subaltern Speak?" question is a good one to wrestle with. (I read Spivak in a 2nd-year undergrad history course. I am not making my students do the same thing because I suspect they would riot.) What baffles and confuses me is that they will write this... while reading carefully curated -- thank you very much -- sources about the very people whose experiences are allegedly LOST TO HISTORY FOREVER. We even get some firsthand accounts. And I wish I could figure out why I can assign a whole bunch of sources about the lives of marginalized people (queer, disabled, female, trans, enslaved, etc.) and still get responses about TRAGICALLY, SUCH PEOPLE'S STORIES WERE NOT WRITTEN DOWN. What do they think they're reading? Why doesn't it count if it's assigned rather than passing organically before their eyes in some other way?

is it weird if i say i genuinely wish there was more positivity aimed at people w large chests
"having a large chest is the beauty standard" no having a large chest is the Sexual standard theres a difference. i can only even be Hot and everything i ever wear will be deemed too sexual for every single situation. tank top shows too much cleavege or side boob a button up is always too busty and a crop top will always show too much skin. having a large chest leads to so much back pain and sexualization and complaining about it makes people go "ahh grass is alwahs greener/you are the beauty standard, why complain?" like genuinely i urge yall to watch anything with a larger chested woman and notice, REALLY notice, that her chest is her entire personality. notice that people critiqing misogynist charavter designs alwayd tend to rally in the statement that large chest=misogny, casting aside the Many Many Many women and people who look like Me and just . have a large chest? and exist? and deserve respect and not to be seen as nothing more than a sex symbol by both sides? idk ikdayy
also if there's one thing that is constantly highlighted in fandom discourse And Also Every Day Of My Life, it is this:
people straight up believe that having visible big tits means you're not non-binary(/trans/GNC).
PLEASE explain the Latin fuck words. for science
Okay so. The Romans think that sex doesn't count as real sex unless Someone Is Getting Penetrated By A Dick Or Dick-Adjacent Object. Very sort of dick-centric system.
So Latin has six words for "to fuck", divided into three pairs: one pair for each of the possible Holes (ass, mouth, pussy). In each pair there is a word for topping and a word for bottoming.
Most people who know a little about Latin fuck verbs know 'pedicare' and 'irrumare' from the first line of Catullus 16 (Pēdīcābō ego vōs et irrumābō), which is a poem about saying "absolutely shut the fuck up and piss all the way off" to fandom antis and purity police who are making repulsive accusations about you personally, based on things they're reading into your work from a bad-faith perspective. Catullus was so real for that and it's incredibly endearing to me that he was dealing with the same thing we are still dealing with. I got a hater in my askbox doing this about The Wisdom of Emperors just the other day, but I took the high road and, unlike Catullus, did not tell them "I will assfuck you and I will facefuck you" So here sort of a chart about the verbs: Topping | Bottoming Mouth: irrumare | fellare Ass: pedicare | cevere Cunt: futuere | crisare
Another fun fact related to the fuck verbs was that the Romans didn't think about sexual orientation in terms of who you're attracted to, they thought about it in terms of "which is your favorite hole and what do you like to do with it." So you'll get graffiti (ancient roman subtweeting) about things like "Marcus is a fututor [cunt-fucker] and a pedico [ass-fucker] but omg girlies I also heard he's a fellator [cock-sucker] 👀👀👀👀" In the modern day we'd just call him bisexual, but in Ancient Rome it is not enough to know if someone is bisexual (they think it's kind of perverted if a man only fucks women, like do you have some kind of freaky pussy fetish???? you've never once even fucked a twink??? dat's gay, bro. gay to not be bi), you also have to know if he's being bisexual in a respectable sort of way
You will notice that pussy-eating is not on this list, because those words do not mean "to fuck", they translate more directly to just "pussy-licking" (cunnilingus), and because the Romans are sexist as all hell and think that's gross and filthy anyway. This is not ONLY because of pussy terror, it's also that the mouth is the most sacred part of the body -- so eating pussy or sucking a dick is actually considered slightly more "shameful" than getting fucked in the ass. (Please note as well that the fuck verbs are gender neutral -- if you're a roman man and your girlfriend owns a strap-on, she can [pedicare] you. but be careful because your sworn enemy in the forum will have a fucking FIELD DAY if he hears about that and will write a Mean Poem about you or subtweet you on a public wall)
The moral of this story is that the Ancient Romans were absolutely *GAGGING* for social media (see Martial's Epigrams, aka My Best Tweets), and the second moral of this story is that if this was a fun post for you, you should look at my kickstarter for alllllll of this kind of nonsense in the form of A Fantasy Novel That's Pretending To Be An Academic Paper With A Fake Bibliography And Foonotes aka The Wisdom of Emperors. And please signal boost this so everyone can know about Latin Fuck Verbs and Roman Subtweeting, we've really learned so much here together
inspired by a rant i was going on elsewhere bc someone tweeted something very stupid and uninformed about hamlet and it got my back up as someone who took two single-text-focus english literature courses in college and they were on wuthering heights and hamlet, i now put it to all of you on here:
what's "your" shakespeare play?
hamlet
macbeth
the tempest
merchant of venice
midsummer night's dream
twelfth night
richard iii
othello
julius caesar
king lear
another not listed (specify in tags) (i really just put my own top 10 here nbd)
i have no particular feelings about any shakespeare play/results tag
Honestly, god bless my wee auld Scottish dad. It's been nearly a full year and he's still telling everyone he meets that his wee girl off living in America wrote a book about vampires and werewolves kissing and I do mean everyone.
Half expecting a review one day that's just "learnt about this after sitting down next to some wee auld guy on the bus who wouldnae shut up about it. anyway, no really my thing, but the patters good."
This is the same family I was afraid to come out to and accidentally did it by becoming a bestselling author, and now there's an entire call center on the northside of the Glasgow Quay that has to clock in every day listening to the wee auld guy on the front desk shilling his daughter's queer vampire porn and I think that's beautiful lmao
Whatb is the name of that book!??!!
Hunger Pangs: True Love Bites!
There are links all over my pinned post :)
It's 2026, and my wee auld dad is still telling everyone over five years later that his wee lassie wrote a book about vampires and werewolves kissing. Who is he telling now? The hospice nurses handling his end-of-life care. 😭😭😭
The man is on his deathbed and still telling anyone who will listen that they should read my book. I am simultaneously gutted with grief and laughter. God, what a way to be loved.
Oh thanks but what the fuck does any of that mean
I’ve seen quite a few of these in my time, but this one takes the cake.
This is fucking killing me
Golp: a roundel purpure.
Repeat this to yourself until it begins to have meaning
Okay then since some of you need to be reminded of this:
Roundels are circles in heraldry. They are named according to their color, which also has its own lingo. Let’s meet them!
Bezant: roundel or (gold) 🟡
Plate: roundel argent (silver) ⚪️
Torteau: roundel gules (red) 🔴
Pomme: roundel vert (green) 🟢
Hurt: roundel azure (blue) 🔵
Golp: roundel purpure (purple) 🟣
Pellet: roundel sable (black) ⚫️
If your field is strewn with roundels, you can describe it appropriately as being bezanty, hurty, golpy, and so on.
