Fantasy racism exists because your characters won't kill human beings if they have to see them as people. It's embedded in the genre, even if you strip away the reasons behind why a group might get persecuted in a story.

Coming up with reasons why a fantasy race is persecuted can sometimes be more racist than not having any reasons at all. That's why I think it's better to keep it as vague as possible. Racism in reality doesn't make sense, so trying to justify the persecution of orcs and elves is just a waste of time.
