I guess now is as good a time as any to let people know I've moved my main blog.
I'm @hauntedlamppost (typo in URL now fixed ๐ ) if you're wondering where I went.
Please know it's nothing personal if I was following you here and haven't followed you from that blog yet. I was getting overwhelmed by this one and needed a quieter space to hang out on tumblr (I know that this blog was never particularly big, but my brain likes to find fun new things to be anxious about and my dashboard here was one of them).
If you want to follow me over there please do, and I promise I won't take any offence if you don't. The new blog is 18+, though I don't plan on posting NSFW content. I would just prefer it if minors do not follow me.
I'll probably delete this blog at some point, but at the moment I'm still trying to decide what to do with the art and writing I've posted here. There probably won't be much of my own art/writing on the new blog for the time being, but hopefully in the future I'll get back into making fandom content more.
21) Based on the scraps of canon we have I like to write John as very caring character. I think he puts his compassion for others above his military orders more often than he'd like to admit and is extremely critical of himself and his own actions. He's also very stubborn, suspicious of new technology, and forms strong opinions about sometimes oddly specific things, so it's really fun to give him new quirks. He also has a really distinctive way of speaking which I try to get across when writing him as well.
25) I first watched TGWDLM a long while ago when it first came out, and I think my impression of John was 'ah, he's a joke about clichรฉ American tropes! That's funny!' My obsession with him and Wilbur didn't strike until after I watched Black Friday years later and loved both of their songs and how they work as narrative foils to one another.
28) Kate Lethbridge-Stewart from Doctor Who, because they're the same character in different fonts. Or AJ Griffin from Pulp Musicals, so that Jeff can talk to Jeff about how they're both haunted by creepy eldritch villains, one of which is also Jeff.

The next morning, bright and early, John found himself waiting out in front of one of the obstacle courses, stretching out his body. Of course Captain Jones would put him through something grueling after forcing him to take a week vacation.
He heard his name being called and turned, frowning when he saw Captain Jones, accompanied by Wilbur and Xander. His eyes darted between the three of them as they approached before landing on Captain Jones. โWhatโs this?โ
โWell, the colonel and I were talking about our mentees and who we thought was better,โ Captain Jones explained with a slight smirk. โI think itโs a bit unfair, seeing as you have more training than Xander, but letโs see what the kidโs got.โ
That ignited a fire in Johnโs chest. He glanced over to see Wilbur and Xander conversing in low voices and felt his heart clench in his chest. โI wonโt let you down, sir.โ
As Xander and John took their places at the start of the course, Wilbur taunted, โCareful, Johnny, donโt wanna hurt yourself after taking it easy on your vacation.โ
Gritting his teeth, John locked eyes with Wilbur. โDonโt worry, colonel. I got plenty of physical activity during my time off.โ
The sight of Wilburโs jaw clenching made John smirk as he looked forward once more.
โOn your mark,โ Captain Jones called, โGet setโฆ Go!โ
John bolted forward before Xander seemed to register the signal to go. The course was like second nature to John. He was pretty sure he could do it in his sleep at this point. He finished the last rope swing, jumping off to land at the finish line.
Captain Jones and Colonel Cross clapped politely. John turned around to see Xander still working to get through the low crawls. Pride swelled in Johnโs chest as he fell back to watch.
When Xander finally finished the course, Wilbur and Captain Jones cheered, clapping him on the back, congratulating him.
John frowned, not fully understanding whatโs going on. By the time he walked over to the trio, Wilbur and Xander were already walking away.
โSergeant,โ Captain Jones sighed, turning to look at John. A deep frown rested on his face.
โYes sir?โ John didnโt like that. The captain almost always called him by his first name.
The captain studied John for a long moment. โYou know the other name we call the obstacle course by?โ
โYes sir. Confidence courses.โ John wondered where this was going.
โCorrect. Why do you think we call them that?โ
Blinking in surprise, John wracked his brains as he tried to think of an answer. โIโm not sure, sir.โ
โItโs a place to build confidence in different skills, learn what needs work, to encourage your fellow soldiers,โ Captain Jones described. โWhen you were starting out, what would happen if you fell behind in the course?โ
โ...the ones who had finished cheered me on,โ John answered stiffly, โOr some of them would jump back into the course to finish it with me.โ
Captain Jones nodded. โSo tell me why you stood idly by while a new recruit ran the course? Not a single goddamn sound out of you. No attempt to make him feel not alone. Soldiers donโt work alone, Sergeant. Weโre a team, a unit.โ
Shame creeped up the back of Johnโs neck, turning his ears red. โI-โ he started.
โColonel Cross mentioned this morning that you were developing a bit of an ego, giving the new recruits a hard time,โ Captain Jones interrupted, โI was hoping it wasnโt true. Now I see it was.โ Disappointment and contempt dripped off the captainโs words like venom.
John shrunk back slightly. His heart sunk in his chest. โCaptain, I-โ
โYouโre bright, MacNamara, but that doesnโt mean shit if you canโt work in a team.โ Captain Jones shakes his head. โAs punishment, youโll be running drills with the new recruits for the next week, starting tomorrow. You know the schedule?โ
โ...yes sir,โ John answered quietly.
โGood. Dismissed.โ
John turned, marching stiffly back to his dorm. After a shower and a change of clothes, his shame had burned away to anger. Gritting his teeth, he grabbed his pillow off his bed, slamming it against his mattress over and over again. Feathers floated in the air with each hit before he finally collapsed on his bed, face buried in the pillow.
He screamed, the sound muffled.
He wanted nothing more than to go confront Wilbur, but he wasnโt going to give him the satisfaction. Wilbur wanted to play hardball? Fine. John could play too.
The next week was hell. John forgot just how tedious new recruit training was. He knew why: weed out the weak-willed ones. He had been lucky. He had gotten out of the majority of these training sessions, having trained under Wilbur.
At the thought of the colonel, he gritted his teeth. The thought of the other man still made his blood boil after the stunt he pulled at the obstacle course.
At the end of his last day of training with the new recruits, John laid in the grass, staring up at the sky. His chest rose and fell slowly as he breathed, drinking in the sight of the oranges, reds, and purples that painted the sky as the sun set.
A rustle next to him caught his attention. He looked over to see Xander sitting in the grass next to him. โPermission to speak, Sergeant?โ
โPermission granted,โ John replied before looking back up.
โWhatโs your problem with me?โ Xander questioned bluntly, โI heard all of these great things about you and you turned out to be kind of an asshole.โ
Sighing, John closed his eyes. โ...I donโt have a problem with you,โ he replied truthfully. He hesitated as he chose his next words carefully. โI have aโฆ complicated relationship with Colonel Cross. He was my mentor before I got promoted. Ever since I got promoted, it feels like he does things just to rile me up, yโknow? Itโs frustrating.โ
โ...yeah, I get that feeling from him too,โ Xander admitted. A beat of silence passes. โWere you assigned to him?โ
That made John open his eyes. โWhat?โ
โWere you assigned to him?โ Xander repeated, โI was. Apparently, he didnโt want a new mentee, but since he did such a great job with you, they wanted him to mentor someone else.โ
John took a moment to let this information sink in. โNo. No, he requested to mentor me, as far as I know.โ
โYouโre lucky then. You donโt have to feel like a burden,โ Xander said bitterly.
Sitting up, John crossed his legs as he faced Xander. โHey, youโre not a burden,โ he replied seriously. โColonel Cross may not have wanted to mentor you initially, but thatโs not going to stop him from being the best damn mentor he can be. The man doesnโt do anything by halves.โ
Is that why I'm still hearing their voices in my head?

It's always more difficult to accept a person's death when one isn't told about it first person. It's harder yet to accept that fact when the words come from the newspaper that used to employ the recently deceased.
Benjamin Park picks up a newspaper in printing house square, and immediately regrets it when he starts reading the headlines.
