The streets of Venice, if majestic in the daylight, are magical at night. After the sun falls, and it’s warmth recedes from even the highest windows and rooftops, the lanterns of the city sit at the center of pools of soft light, throwing shadows across the time worn walls of the old city. Stone bridges span the canals, which are washed in new moonlight, and the canvas-covered boats creak with movement as they pull against their pilings. Where there were crowds of people whose voices clogged the air in the narrow alleys, there are the now the calmer noises of individual footfalls, the unhurried staccato of wooden heels on stone. We walked more quickly, not to rush, but to see more- before the sun rose and transformed the city once again.
