hey guys, stuart semple just posted this
and all the proceeds from the shirts are being donated to the callen-lorde health center to promote health education and wellness in the community.
pass this around, if you could? it seems like a really bold statement with really good intentions
When you are writing a story and refer to a character by a physical trait, occupation, age, or any other attribute, rather than that characterâs name, you are bringing the readerâs attention to that particular attribute. That can be used quite effectively to help your reader to focus on key details with just a few words. However, if the fact that the character is âthe blond,â âthe magician,â âthe older woman,â etc. is not relevant to that moment in the story, this will only distract the reader from the purpose of the scene.Â
If your only reason for referring to a character this way is to avoid using his or her name or a pronoun too much, donât do it. Youâre fixing a problem that actually isnât one. Just go ahead and use the name or pronoun again. Itâll be good.
Someone finally spelled out the REASON for using epithets, and the reasons NOT to.
In addition to that:
If the character you are referring to in such a way is THE VIEWPOINT CHARACTER, likewise, donât do it. I.e. if youâre writing in third person but the narration is through their eyes, or what is also called âthird person deep POVâ. If the narration is filtered through the characterâs perception, then a very external, impersonal description will be jarring. Itâs the same, and just as bad, as writing âMy bright blue eyes returned his gazeâ in first person.
Furthermore,Â
if the story is actually told through the eyes of one particular viewpoint character even though itâs in the third person, and in their voice, as is very often the case, then you shouldnât refer to the characters in ways that character wouldnât.
In other words, if the third-person narrator is Harry Potter, when Dumbledore appears, it says âDumbledore appearsâ, not âAlbus appearsâ. Bucky Barnes would think of Steve Rogers as âSteveâ, where another character might think of him as âCapâ. Chekov might think of Kirk as âthe captainâ, but Bones thinks of him as âJimâ.Â
Now, there are real situations where you, I, or anybody might think of another person as âthe other manâ, âthe taller manâ, or âthe doctorâ: usually when you donât know their names, like when there are two tap-dancers and a ballerina in a routine and one of the men lifts the ballerina and then she reaches out and grabs the other manâs hand; or when there was a group of people talking at the hospital and they all worked there, but the doctor was the one who told them what to do. These are all perfectly natural and normal. Similarly, sometimes I think of my GP as âthe doctorâ even though I know her name, or one of my coworkers as âthe taller manâ even though I know his. But I definitely never think of my long-term life partner as âthe green-eyed womanâ or one of my best friends as âthe taller personâ or anything like that. Itâs not a sensible adjective for your brain to choose in that situation - itâs too impersonal for someone youâre so intimately acquainted with. Also, even if someone was having a one night stand or a drunken hookup with a stranger, they probably wouldnât think of that person as âthe other manâ: you only think of âotherâ when youâre distinguishing two things and you donât have to go to any special effort to distinguish your partner from yourself to yourself.
This is something that I pretty consistently have to advise for those I beta edit for. (It doesnât help that I relied on epithets a lot in the earlier sections of my main fic because I was getting into the swing of things.) I am reblogging this so fanfic writers can use this as a reference.
A good rule of thumb: a characterâs familiarity with another character decreases the need for an epithet (and most times you really donât need one at all).
Good writing advice.
Even if they did exist, the Stark Internship is probably super unpaid and thatâs the That in that.
youâre right and you should say it

Y'all think your professors are salty or petty? My freshman year my intro to anthropology prof overheard some dudebro say some homophobic shit and altered the entire semesterâs plan to accommodate three new lectures about homophobia and gender identity and presentation in various cultures. This is to say three ADDITIONAL lectures to go with the one she already have planned.
Important addition: She changed the wallpaper on her computer to a picture her with her wife and two kids. So the first thing we saw when we came into class every day for the remainder of the semester was basically their christmas card
That ainât salty, thatâs her being my hero
Thought: I do NOT think that 50% of the worldâs billionaires should be women. I think there shouldnât be any billionaires at all.
So you are saying 0% of the world should be billionaires?
Why shouldnât their be billionaires? That makes no sense.
Because the existence of billionaires is predicated on the exploitation of human labor and unsustainable environmental harm. That level of wealth hoarding is harmful to economies, as it reduces the amount of money in circulation. No one person, no family, could ever conceivably even SPEND a billion dollars anyway, and it is inherently immoral to accumulate wealth so narrowly while so much of the world lives in abject poverty. Â
Better then to create a wealth ceiling, a point at which all wealth over a certain point is taxed at or very near 100% to incentivize people to actually spend their money rather than hoard it, stimulating the economy and bettering the lives of far more people. Better even still to create and regulate economic systems that protect workers and the environment in a way that such extreme levels of wealth accumulation arenât even feasible.Â
The problem with this is that it reduces the incentive to actually do fiscally well. Whatâs the point of starting a business if you canât become wealthy?
There is a very real difference between âreasonably wealthyâ and A BILLIONAIRE
No one is saying you shouldnât have a nice house, we are saying that having multiple really, really ridiculously nice houses while your employees are either homeless or at serious risk of becoming homeless is immoral.
Iâll never understand why this concept is hard for people. I think itâs because they canât actually fathom how much $1 Billion is.
Seriously.
Letâs say you have a badass job. A great job. You make $100 AN HOUR. You work 10 hours a day ($1000 A DAY), 5 days a week ($5000 a week!!!), every week ($20,000 A MONTH), thats $240,000 Every Year.
It would take you 4,167 years to make a billion dollars.
letting my mom watch queer eye was a mistake. she just walked into my room, pointed at some clothes on my floor and said âhey. what would tan say about this???â and i just shuffled over to pick them up like a sad child cause i would want tan france to be proud of me :( fuck :(
Hereâs what gets me about choice feminism (shaving, makeup, other performative femininity):
If you feel anxious, ugly, embarrassed, or generally bad about going out in public and around others when you have failed to do it, how much of a choice is there?
WOW

Iâm all for fighting for marriage equality in the LGBT community. But weâre so focused on that no one knows about this problem.
WâŚwait Thats a thing????
Yep! The man I refer to as my husband? We arenât actually married. We canât be.
If I married him, the government would literally expect me to care for him and be his sole source of income. He would lose all of his benefits, including SSDI. Spouses are expected to share income and that effects ALL of his benefits, even his health insurance. We simply canât afford to be married.
But it goes even further than that. If I were disabled, our incomes would STILL be combined, meaning BOTH of us would have our benefits cut.
For people reviving supplemental income, their benefits can be cut anywhere from 25% of their current income all the way down to 0%
In fact, one of the stipulations of receiving income under the adult disabled child program (which provides benefits for people who were disabled before age 22) is that they LITERALLY never be married.
I normally donât link to blog posts as resources, but since social service resource sites like to dress this problem up and make it seem smaller than it really is, Iâm gonna call it appropriate! Check it out!

Iâm upset about the situation in case you couldnât tell.
Gorgeous thread this morning on Twitter by @jeffreymarsh!
This judge had exactly the right reaction to the shameful way nonviolent prisoners are treated in US jails
A woman was denied pants or tampons after being arrested for not completing a diversion course that was part of her sentencing from a shoplifting charge. But see how the judge reacts when she finds out that the prisonerâs humiliating treatment is apparently routine.

This is why itâs so important to vote for your local judges after doing a minimal amount of research. Most people just pick whatever judge is there or has a funny name, but this woman is changing the way prisoners are treated and she was voted in by the county. Always do your research before voting for judges, but donât discount it as unomportant. You may need someone like her on your side one day.
The fact that we can accidentally bite the insides of our cheeks has to be the biggest design flaw of the human body.
