Brain Plops

The final version of the promo poster for my “The Enigma of Amigara Fault” adaptation, entitled, obviously, “Silhouette.” The storyboard first draft is about 33% done. I’m taking only a few creative liberties to make it work on-screen (takes place in the US, the protagonist is swapped to female, and there’s the additional scene here and there [there’s no narration, so I have to fill-in the exposition otherways]). I think 2020 is probably just an ambitious goal, but also I think 2020 can be stylized later in a silhouette-like fashion, so it’s gonna really help me get motivated. I promise it’ll be better than the anime. Infinitely better. 

Another adaptation project. I’m working on creating a teleplay of Murakami novels, the working title is “The Murakami Chronicles.” These are some promo ideas. My vision is to have it be a sort of anthology series with 8-10 episodes per season. Season one will spend the first 4-5 episodes on “The Wind-up Bird Chronicle,” and then the back half (also 4-5 episodes) will be “A Wild Sheep Chase” and “Dance Dance Dance.” I’m thinking of blending the two arcs as well. 

A prototype teaser poster of an adaptation I’m working on. The source material is Junji Ito’s psychological horror manga “The Enigma of Amigara Fault,” and I found a location in West Virginia (Champe Rocks) that absolutely screamed, “Shoot a short film adaptation of Amigara here.” More art and storyboards to follow. 

“Shadow Box Studio,” a theatre production company logo. Tried to show restraint with this one because there are a lot of directions one could go.  

A German/post-punk inspired logo design for a hip clothier. I think this would look awesome on boxing and stationary. 

A sort of minimal approach to Russian constructivism. I didn’t really have a social/political message or an advert to attach to it. I wanted to add some splash of unexpected color to the style, and so to compliment this pursuit, I divided the cream rectangle with different (though harmonious) colors to reinforce the departure in style, and also attempted to give a sense of motion by allowing the severed half of the rectangle to slide down. I don’t know which variation I like most. I tried fifty or more, but eventually had to move on before I hated all of them. 

More of the arcade iconography. A couple snack bar signs and the exit sign. I’ve always really loved the “recognizer” ship from Tron,and thought it’d be a cute frame for the exit sign. The nacho is a fairly obvious triforce from Zelda with cheese and salsa cups and a pepper. The drink is maybe a little obscure: the color scheme of Boba/Jango Fett’s Slave I.

Working on a new iconography project. The theme, if you can’t tell, is arcade. These are the restroom signs. I hope the “FE”male, “MA”le, and “NEU”tral is clear enough. 

Kafka dreaming of a chance encounter between Picasso and Odilon Redon. My attempt at a mixture of Redon and Picasso (during his analytical days) representing my favorite of Kafka’s many wonderful aphorisms: “A cage went in search of a bird.” Someday, I might have to tattoo that on my body. Or put it on a plaque. 

A series of logos in which I attempted to use primitivism to get to an idea of a “sophisticated lion,” but slowly morphed into a minimal approach. I’m satisfied with how I boiled it down, and I think the final logo would be pretty ideal for a martini bar. I thought the nose and mouth shape was possibly the most important aspect of a lion.

Logo design for a YouTube chess channel that I am a fan of. He (Agadmator) is Croatian, and the Croatian coat of arms is perfect for a chess reference!

Just a banner/business card for a fictional (for now) design firm. Paul Morphy is an idol of mine, and I hope to someday display a level of creativity and beauty in design comparable to what he achieved on the chessboard. My pencil drawing of bishop pieces makes them look kinda melty, huh?

Three fairly quick and easy drafts for a recording label. I’m not usually a fan of 3-D logos, but I decided to experiment a little here. 

Some logo drafts for a streetwear startup company. “Sunim” is a Hangul word for monks practicing Buddhism, so I went with that direction. They requested a character logo, which isn’t easy. I attempted to use monks and elephants. I dunno. I can workshop this a lot more. But these are day one drafts.
