Ok so I reread DITF (for fic writing reasons) and this panel...
FASCINATES me. Just the way it's phrased. "He must have really loved his mother." Not "he must have really loved me." His mother.
And I have a theory that Sheila wasn't his mum.
This had been said before, I think, but I can't find the post. We know that Jason finds his birth certificate, and his mum's name has been blanked out, but it starts with an S. And there are 3 candidates.
Lady Shiva gets ruled out.
And when Jason meets Sheila...
Notice three things. One, she clocks Bruce first, and that he's rich. Two, Jason calls her mom first. And she doesn't say no, but she doesn't say yes. All she says is Jason. The reaction to her being his mum is all on Jason. He speaks first, he hugs first, he assumes first. And Bruce just told her his name. And three, she reacts to the name Todd. Not Jason. And we already know that she knew Jason's dad.
So I have two theories.
One, she isn't the one listed on the birth certificate. Catherine is a grifter. She's stealing money from the aid camp she works at. And she's being blackmailed, she's in trouble. She is not above lying. And in walks a boy who thinks she's his mother, accompanied by one of the richest men in the world. This is an opportunity. She can exploit this! At least for a bit, but that's all she needs. So she sells Jason a sob story about how his dad kept him from her.
And Jason, who is so desperate for his mum, believes her. And she plays along right up until it's not convenient for her.
Theory number two. She IS the one listed on the birth certificate. But she's not his mum.
What if his mum was someone who couldn't be listed? What if his mum was someone that, if she were, would put Jason at risk? And Sheila, who was a doctor and a friend of Willis, said "put me down". And then promptly left the country.
Now, who could be Jason's bio mum? Who would not want listed on a birth certificate? Who would not want people knowing she had a child? I dunno, maybe an Israeli special agent?
Note the conversation. She's dodging the question, and then answers with a leading statement. "Not in Gotham." That's not a no, that's a statement that demands a follow up! But Jason storms off, and never asks.
I think this is Jason's bio mum. Her, right here. And she knows why he's asking.
Also, look at her face as they drive off.
She knows that's her son, she knows what he's looking for, and she can't give him it right now. Jason's bio mum is Sharmin Rosen.
As for who blanked out the name on the birth certificate? My guess is either Willis or Catherine did it.

i think carol and talia are shockingly similar with enough to differentiate each other that they can bounce off each other as foils. both were established as major (and in carol’s case, primary) love interests to some of dc’s biggest heroes. both were introduced as daughters of incredibly powerful men with large organizations and strong paternalistic misogyny streaks. both are largely defined (at first glance) by these two men in their respective lives. both have whirlwind, deeply passionate, equal-but-not, tragic, doomed romances with their respective loves (who are embarrassing white guys). both are heavily, heavily gendered characters; male carol ferris and male talia al ghul would be so radically different as to be unrecognizable because both women are shaped hard by the misogyny of their worlds. both feel love so strong it hurts. and both have been ceos!
but it’s the differences that are the most interesting, because they clash so directly. compare the topic of male heirs from the first introductions of both fathers:

carl ferris has no sons. he begrudgingly hands ferris aircraft in the hands of his daughter so he can go fuck off and play golf or whatever. carol does an amazing job with it, but carl continuously fails to respect carol’s work because she’s a woman beyond lip service, outright bemoaning how disappointing it was that she was born a woman. carol struggles between her need for power and respect, her internalized misogyny, and her own desires. she wants love and intimacy, but because her society has gendered these as feminine and she has been raised to understand femininity as shameful, carol represses them to focus on the (gendered masculine) pursuit of ambition, which then explodes into a cocktail of passion and violence as star sapphire and predator. carol has been fighting for respect from a father who never respected her from the day she was born, and in turn, fighting herself. even her name is a mark of the carl ferris jr. she failed at being.

ra’s al ghul (at this point) has no sons. he wants to find an heir, and passing the torch onto talia is a no-go because she’s a girl, so he goes for a son-in-law. i wouldn’t be me if i didn’t point out that this is a racialised decision; how on earth could the orientals be more progressive than us at a time when we in the wonderful west are still wrapping our heads around female leaders in the great year of 1971, denny o’neil thought. but i think this is also true to talia’s character. at this point in time, talia is only ever in the action as a reaction to someone she loves (ra’s and bruce) either 1. asking her to do something or 2. getting hurt and talia goes out on a tear of vengeance (also racialised: duty over personal ambition.) she doesn’t want to be heir and has zero qualms with being passed over. she is a woman who would rather be in the spa, lounging about, smoking a cig and having a gorgeous cuppa and reading a fashion magazine or blowing off her medical school work. she’s very feminine and she knows it and likes it that way! talia is content staying out of her father’s business in a way that i think carol would find pathetic, which is fun!
talia is also a fair bit younger than carol, especially at the point of their introductions. she wises up to the fact that being nothing more than ra’s al ghul’s little girl and bruce’s doomed love sucks big time. she has a secret baby. she leaves her father to die. she goes into a depressive, self-indulgent spiral—and then lex luthor knocks on her door and hands her the keys to his company, and not only does talia do a fantastic job of both running lexcorp and sabotaging it simultaneously, but this is her arc of identifying who talia al ghul is on her own two feet, something carol also had to do the painful way.
wouldn’t it be awesome to see them meet as two brilliant women in the corporate world butting heads while finding common ground? both of whom are far more dangerous and bloody underneath those circumstances? where they can bond over their struggles with sexism and gender roles? where they can have a strong relationship with another woman, someone important in their life who won’t use that gendered relationship against them? who knows what its like?
and then in the 2000s both had their arcs and steady development snapped in half and left to rot when carol became a flat pink girl power character and talia became a dragon lady so we will never get that beautiful vision. but we’ll always have the power of the word doc and tumblr post. amen
I’ve heard far too much of Bruce’s take on Jason’s death. Far too much. Enough is enough. If I have to hear any more, I’ll have a stroke. I need him to never speak of Jason’s death again, especially since he never has anything decent to say. I also don’t need to see any more of aditf from his perspective; honestly, I want to see aditf from Sheila’s point of view. I want to see the perspective of a woman who ran far away to Ethiopia to escape her past mistake, so scared that she was willing to sell out her own son when the past came back to haunt her. I want to see what she thought when she first reunited with her son. What she thought when his son turned out to be Robin. What she thought when she sold him out. What she thought when he crawled through his own blood to get to her. Her last moment. Hell, I think about her last word so fucking often.
But all we really have is just the aditf scene being redrawn like a hundred times now… At this point readers who see those picture would just think that aditf has been explored and exploited too much. Too much, maybe true, but the right word is actually too excessive. Too redundant. We just have too many about Bruce’s thoughts and perspective and how he failed to save Jason and… who even cares about how Jason’s mother sold him out to the Joker! Who even cares about how he went through hell to save her. Hell, who even cares about how he tried to cover her from the blast and Sheila’s last word or anything. We just have to focus about the image of Bruce carrying Jason through the explosion only. That’s the only thing that the readers need to know about Jason’s death that’s it. Not even the image of him hugging Jason when he found him. This is not even the story about a father that lost his son who he loves so deeply, this is just the story about how the oh so perfect Dark Knight failed to save Robin. And all we have to know about that Robin who died is just that he’s a bad Robin, and he is very very reckless. Who even cares about how he wanted to save his mother or anything.
It’s just that that image in aditf being exploited so many time but they never actually dive deep into the issue okay. It’s just that the comics refered to aditf so much but never actually explored the aspects in the issue in a serious way. And how Sheila just being completely ignored in the whole aditf story is insane. Talk more about Sheilaaaa.
It also got pretty boring with me how they keep using Joker and the crowbar as Jason’s deepest fear or whatever okay. He got over Joker long ago. Use Sheila or Gloria’s suicide or the batarang (how could they never explored the batarang?!?)
AND PLEASE PLEASE TALK BOUT SHEILA. MENTION SHEILA. SHEILA’S IMPORTANT. DON’T IGNORE SHEILA. JUST DON’T IGNORE HER. WHY DID PEOPLE IGNORE HER.
i simply cannot buy into the idea that sheila ‘back alley abortions provider’ haywood wouldn’t have tried every method in the book to try and abort jason the second she realized she was pregnant. in fact, i think it strengthens the running theme of jason being categorically unable to Stay Dead, and adds a layer of horror and complexity (and, perhaps, unsettling sympathy) to sheila’s character and her betrayal of jason in aditf. it deepens jason’s traumas around betrayal, rejection, and the pervasive fear (conviction) that he’s inherently bad/irredeemable/unforgivable, and it interacts in fascinating ways with his canonical distrust of authority figures (aka people who could potentially rob him of choice) and aggressive defense of vulnerable populations (violence against women + children - populations systematically disempowered in our society - has historically been one of the most consistent reasons he’s gone no-holds-barred beatdown on somebody).
i need people to understand that jason dying for sheila had nothing to do with him loving her for herself and everything to do with atoning for not being able to save catherine

i won't abide anyone insisting jason loved sheila and that she should therefore be a mother figure to him. putting aside her cruelty, jason didn't know sheila. he was fixated on reenacting his trauma with catherine. he wanted to save "his mom" because he couldn't save his mom: catherine. sheila was totally irrelevant.

“Jason looks like Dick. Jason looks like Bruce.” Fun. Nice. Popular in the fd. But when I first knew about Jason Todd and was reading Batman #410, my only thought was just “omg he looks exactly like his dad.” Willis, yeah, and he has Sheila’s eyes.
Sometimes i wake up feeling like that one panel of bruce hugging and telling damian he loves and jason is just next to him very much looking like he would die for a hug and some comfort.
Thinking about this random scene in Gotham War... how Steph never had the option of saying Bruce's name for the longest time because she never knew and yet he knew who she was all along and how he repeatedly used that against her. How he once told her "remember, Stephanie, we know who you are under the mask." How when Bruce fires her as Robin he calls her 'Stephanie', and him saying her name is what tells her something's wrong. How Bruce asked Cass to give Steph Batgirl in Reborn era but still calls her Spoiler time a 'liability'. So Stephanie Brown, currently Batgirl, asks a question about Bruce. And Bruce walks in and says: no names in the field, Spoiler.
While all of the Robin suits are amazing and unique in their own way, there is genuinely NOTHING more adorable than Jaybin with his knee and elbow pads. All art of Jaybin should include them; they make him look so much cuter. Like, just look at the baby with his elbow pads! He's so little!!

It's awesome that you think if he'd just been found by the batfamily early after resurrection all would've been happy and well. But tell me how this helps JASON and not just the bats getting to have him back free of the horrible sin of murder. Like cool awesome there's no crime lording anymore. How does being found early benefit Jason though. Please explain the mystical line of events that has Jason accept the batfam without any tests. Like being mean rn I guess but I have a headache and I can't stop thinking about how nothing is ever allowed to be about Jason and whatever his problems are.
Fresh from the pit fresh and immediately set loose. Jason's early plans are to blow up Bruce and kill him. It's through lost days that he realizes what he wants- to recreate his death so that he can see Bruce choose him. This would've left Jason feeling more secure and of course Bruce was MEANT to pass. After Bruce fails Jason moves on to Dick with lower stakes and still Dick fails. Maybe a Jason beaten down and depressed since rhato re would would fall in line better in this hypothetical found early. But that's not who you're getting. Early resurrection Jason is gonna be doijg home alone shit to them if he's found early. He's gonna attempt patricides and back out when he realizes thats not what he wants and then he's gonna figure out his recreation plan LIKE tbh I don't really see at all how being found early would change anything for JASON. Other than like. Less training . I guess he's meant to realize his family loves him during the healing process and for his removal to be less prominent but like I dunno man. He needs to know Bruce would choose him, choose him over the joker, that Bruce could stick by him if he was bad, that Bruce would allow the worst of the worst to die if theyre going to get away free otherwise. He ran away believing Bruce cares more about cases than him and his needs and like everything that lead jay to aditf doesn't magically go away even if you take him in before he commits any yucky murders and bundle him up pat him on the head and then leave him alone to heal and leave him alone in the manorwhike dealing with a joker breakout. Jason has problems and worries with Bruce he needs solved and he tries to get them by doing utrh. If you bring him back early you're just getting first draft utrh plan
Just went through a comic where they draw Jason looks just as old as Dick who is like 8 years older than him, and looks very much older than Tim who's like 2 years younger than him. With the bonus of him calling Tim "kid" who is again barely 2 years younger than him. And I already felt like I want to rip my hair off. What am I going to do when I see they draw Jason like he's the same age as Bruce. Rip my head off?
