For those who are just seeing this now and don't know the context, basically this happened during a pride parade in Portugal. This man was standing outside his house waving a Portuguese flag, which made a lot of people worried because they figure maybe there was a kind of nationalist thing going on here. He also gestured at people in the crowd, which again a lot of people read as maybe being threatening. Keep in mind that pride parades are really, really loud, so no one can hear even a shout from more than a few feet away, so who knows what the guy could be saying. But one of the people he gestured at goes over to talk to him, and he gives them his flag, and they give him theirs and hug. All he wanted was to show his support and did it in the only way he knew how.

When I was training to be a battered women’s advocate, my supervisor said something that really blew my mind:
