one of my favorite this american life segments of late is about the people who played orchestra pit for phantom of the opera on broadway and how, like, a sizeable majority of them had literally been playing the show since it opened in 1988 (on broadway. I know it opened in 86 on the west end, you random pedants, but I am specifically talking about broadway musicians) because their contracts stipulated that they'd have jobs throughout the show's entire run... but nobody anticipated that phantom would become the longest-running broadway show of all time.
and none of these people wanted to walk away from a guaranteed job, so very few of them ever quit. they just kept doing the same show eight nights a week... for twenty or thirty years... and by the time it finally closed last year most of these musicians (who had been working together for DECADES) hated each other and really really fucking loathed phantom. I can't stop thinking about it. it's indescribably hellish to imagine but also the funniest thing I've ever heard in my life.
can you imagine.
[ID: excerpt from an article reading: One of my favorite stories, which should drive anyone who has every played in a band crazy-- thereâs this bassoon player who has sat next to the same clarinet player since 1988. Sheâs convinced he plays half a note4 flat on every note heâs every played. He denies this. /]
it's cool how in the 6 years since this tweet was written it's become significantly less useful not because anything has gotten better but because the majority of products on Amazon are now from fly-by-night brands called "ZZPORK" and "GLUM4PANT"

ART - RORONOA ZORO: (via: @lecowwwsx).
friend of mine recommended a video essay that's like 5 hours long about why it's currently a whole Thing for fascists to claim they only eat meat and demonize vegetables etc etc, and it's genuinely quite well researched in many places and contains some fascinating history and has made me feel very weird about my status as an adult who enjoys drinking milk. but I've not finished it and I genuinely don't know if I will because at one point the ol' "you can't say you care about animals and also eat animals" chestnut got dropped by the white vegan essayist and it put such a bad taste in my mouth that I had to leave instantly
like idk man it just feels genuinely parodic to dedicate hours to analyzing how foodways have frequently been used as white supremacist propaganda and then casually toss out an argument that pretty invariably demonizes indigenous hunting practices with 0 regard for traditional knowledge and land stewardship guiding those practices
Every time I hear a white vegan say that I want to throw the rubble of the Klamath Dams at them.
The largest dam removal in U.S. history. So successful that the salmon that havenât run freely in the river for literally over a century came back the next year. Not steady progress over a decade as expected, the very next salmon run they came home. No one alive saw salmon in that river outside the hatcheries kept by nativeâs tribes and the Department of Fish And Wildlife scientists desperately trying to save them. One of the activists who helped bring the suit spoke of their dying grandmother making them promise to bring the fish home, and they didnât know how that was possible, but they spent decades doing it.
The legal basis for successfully suing the power company who owned the dams was Indigenous treaty rights to eat the fish. Eating the fish was the one thing in a century that succeeded in being a clear and legally binding right that superseded the desires of white capital and industry. I have been going to the public interest environmental law conference off and on for 20 years where a lot of organizing for Undam The Klamath happened. Iâve heard updates about every legal tact they tried as they happened, and they tried everything.
There are healthy, thriving salmon, trout, and lamprey in a rewilding and recovering Klamath River right now as a direct result of Indigenous people eating them. Of their legally binding right to eat them. They sure as fuck care more about those fish than any white vegan ever could. They are salmon people that the Creator sent Salmon to feed, while charging the People with protecting and stewarding them. Itâs not possible to learn about salmon and trout in the Pacific Northwest without learning this, and itâs unambiguously racist to dismiss this symbiotic relationship.
The white vegans are trying to get all hunting and fishing banned in Oregon, and thatâs quite possibly the single most catastrophic thing that could be done to the animals here because we killed off all the major predators of creatures like deer and without anything hunting them their numbers will explode, eat all the vegetation, destroy the ecosystem, and then die along with everything else in that failing ecosystem. Controlled hunting of deer is vitally necessary for the deer to survive. This is something Native people know, but patronizing racist savior-complex white people refuse to listen to.
I have a whole collection of Oregonâs Public Broadcastingâs documentaries about Klamath River or the larger story of fish and people in the region. If you watch nothing else, watch Klamath Dams Are Coming Out, First Salmon Ceremony, After The Dams, and First Decent (Native made). It could not be clearer that the salmon are being protected and nourished by the people who eat them, and that stewardship is a massive part of their creation myths. But it contradicts political vegan dogma so they donât listen.
The Klamath River Runs Free
#also do you have any idea how much conservation is funded by people who want to eat those animals#at least in the us anytime someone buys ammo or hunting equipment or hunting licenses that money goes directly to state wildlife agencies
Yoshiro Kimura's new game Stray Children is a spiritual successor to Moon: Remix RPG, but it has more than a little in common with Undertale
If youâre enjoying Moon: Remix RPG Adventureâs newly released Switch port, you probably have Undertale creator Toby Fox to thank. In a recen
There is no 'Undertale' without 'moon,' the so-called "anti-RPG" that took the many tropes of the JRPG and turned them on their head.
Putting all these interviews here to emphasize the importance of Moon Remix RPG Adventure's in inspiring Toby Fox, and how Undertale in turn inspired one of its devs, Yoshiro Kimura, to take a chance and make a game like Moon again
i just think thats beautiful to find out that a little known game you made when you were in your 20s inspired a kid (who was like probably fucking 7 years old when it came out) who grew up to make one of the most beloved games ever made
âeveryone is mad at me and they just wonât tell meâ â> âno one has said anything about being mad at me and i havenât done anything to warrant being mad at so if someone is silently fuming about me and not saying anything thatâs their problem and actually quite weird of them and i can effortlessly move on with my lifeâ
this took SUCH a huge deal of unlearning because, like so many of you, i came out of a home where being quietly in trouble WAS the default state, and i DID grow up not just with the assumption but borderline religious conviction that Everyone Is Mad At Me, I Am Bad, I Must Exist In A Constant State of Attempting to Pacify The Natural Rage I Inspire In Everyone. and no it actually turns out that my family are the freaks . and yours are too
âthis isnât true because i DEFINITELY silently fume at people in the hopes theyâll figure out what they did and apologizeâ thatâs not good. you shouldnât do that
âthis isnât true because the ex-friendship that traumatized me ended explosively after they were mad at me and never told me whyâ thatâs not good. they shouldnât be doing that
âi donât think this is true because my current friend group is constantly icing me out until i figure out what ive done to upset them and properly apologized without being toldâ hey thats not good. they should not be doing that
if the peacefulness of your relationship with someone (familial, romantic, friendly, anything) can be destroyed by effective communication/asking them for effective communication, you have got to get out of there. if you canât get out of there, youâve got to throw away any ideas about what that person thinks of you because they have their own shit to figure out before they can accurately read anyone else
but above all, one must not concern oneself with the opinions of people who censor the word fuck

invented a new word today. its 'plagiarism'. im a genius i know
This gives me an idea; I'll tell you all about it after I get back from the patent office, wait right there
I learned in my political science class that all major famines in the 20th century and onward have been caused by oppressive groups or political situations restricting access to food, NOT natural causes like crop failure
This is literally the point that Indian economist Amartya Sen made that won him the Nobel prize in economics. As a child, he survived one of the several Bengal famines that were organised by the British colonisers in India. He developed his theory on famines, which is that they were more about distribution of food rather than production or availability of it
The same is true of the Holodomor. Food shortages may be naturally occurring and no oneâs fault. But famines are always a policy choice.
Some people have access to food. Some people donât. Who goes in which category? Thatâs a choice.
@i-like-reblog-maps I heard you like large maps ^â _â ^

it's not frequent enough to be considered a meme or a trend, but I like how every so often this site gets a new "woke mafia boss" variation.

THIS IS SO COOL
woah
This is from âBeasts of Burdenâ, a really cool comic about a bunch of dogs (and one cat) protecting their town from the supernatural things that threaten it. Itâs spooky and sad and really just fantastic. At one point they teamed up with Hellboy. Everyone should read it (if you donât mind some pretty dark things happening. it is not a cheerful comic but it is a good one).
Hey! So, I loved this comic, and still think about it occasionally, and tonight it was linked to me again with just the right timing so that I hyperfocused and squirreled off to go read everything! They arenât really numbered well, but the Wikipedia page has a list of them in release order and what anthologies to find them in!
But given that itâs a pain to seek out each one one by one, Iâve got a list of links in order a smidge further down! Please try to support Dark Horse Comics if you can, but if youâre broke like me and still want to read, the Internet is a beautiful place. According to the wiki page, there are at least two more installments to come, scheduled for May 1st and June 5th, but thereâs no real update schedule for the series as a whole.
Do note: they are graphic, gory, and sad, with a lot of body horror. But theyâre really fantastic.
Beasts of Burden: Animal Rites contains: 1. Stray 2. The Unfamiliar 3. Let Sleeping Dogs Lie 4. A Dog and His Boy 5. The Gathering Storm 6. Lost 7. Something Whiskered This Way Comes 8. Grave Happenings
9. Sacrifice (Hellboy Crossover)
Beasts of Burden: Neighborhood Watch contains: 10. Food Run 11. Story Time 12. The View From The Hill (the one in this post!)
13. Hunters and Gatherers 14. What The Cat Dragged In 15. Wise Dogs and Eldritch Men
The trade collection for âWise Dogs and Eldritch Menâ came out a couple of weeks ago, btw.
âNeighborhood Watchâ is due out in October and contains more stories than listed above (including the Hellboy crossover).
This is one of my favorite series ever and Iâm so glad itâs finally getting proper collections instead of one-off anthology appearances.
Warning, though, the story about Hazel and her pups will *destroy* you.
mass effect 2 is INSANE. you are a decorated soldier, special ops of the galaxy. you possess knowledge of the deadly future to come, no one believes you. you die. you die gruesomely. you are brought back to life by a terrorist organization you've been fighting against. you owe them your life. you use them. they use you. the future you knew would come is here. no one is safe.
is that still you, by the way? in that body? that died? is that still you? how do you know?
