It still drives me insane when I think about how much hate Erica and Lucas got and by default their actors, for playing slightly caustic and rude characters in their first introduction and having a personality (both of them being sassy is another issue itself) compared to how much hate max and mike got for also playing caustic rude ass characters (which is none) and the way to this day people will deny it had anything to do with racism.
Lucas was slightly mean season one and the fandom treated his character and Caleb like shit and were racist af to him. Mike was mean af randomly throughout all five seasons and crickets.
Erica comes in super sarcastic and bratty season three nd they jumped down her and Priah's throats. Meanwhile Max was introduced that way season two, and lowkey so was Robin, but again crickets.
'But they're just better written'. My ass. The same fandom where half of yall still doesn't believe Billy was racist even after Caleb and Dacre literally spelled it out for you. Fuck outta here with that nonsense. This fandom can be so infuriating and if you call it out especially on reddit, it's why you gotta bring race into it, as if the fandom didn't do it themselves (Priah and Caleb both being insulted ad called slurs for. characters)
Backlash so bad for both of them after their introduction season they don't do shit and have little to no real plot of their own they might as well be background characters for the rest of the series.
The way it's just like real life and it irks me so bad. Everyone gets to be an asshole without major backlash besides black people. Always have to be a model citizen cause people are just itching to start going see told you they were bad any moment they get. (Usual suspects, 13 percent, etc comments) let a non black person do something and it's fucking crickets. But somehow one person represents as all, but ignore all the shitty people another groups doing the same shit.
Don't even get me started on byclair (it's cute) but so many people use it as a prop to make Will more desirable and don't give a fuck about Lucas about as character, just like they do lumax.
The reason that the duffers say Erica will be fine is due to the adultification of young black children and how they are not seen as young and innocent who also deal with issues and personal traumas to overcome. It’s probably because most of their struggles come from racism and white supremacy and how the media disregards them as insignificant in comparison to white children who they believe is more relatable to general audience which couldn’t be further from the truth. Like you, I do t appreciate characters of color only portrayed based on stereotypes and not giving more dimensional like white characters. That’s why I didn’t like how the duffers wrote Lucas and Erica stories in the show. Like they don’t even touch on their parents and how even though their financial status is privileged like the wheelers, they as black people are still seen as inferior despite being so accomplished. So many things could have been touched on in the show but the duffers couldn’t be bothered to tell it beside shoving their self insert in the front.
