wish lion's mane jellyfish would stop doing that
doing what?
i was going to say doing THAT
but apparently this photo is fake which is an enormous burst of relief to my already fragile, suddering psyche.
sadly though THIS photo of a barrel jellfish is real
donāt like that
Yeah sure that photo is fake, but what ISN'T fake is the fact that the largest lion's mane jellyfish found was about 36 meters long. The average blue whale is about 25 meters long btw.
Here if you'd like to see it:
we DO NOT TALK ABOUT TENTACLE LENGTH that is VERBOTEN
damn, the girth on those tendrils tho
WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT TENTACLE GIRTH
Idk what the fuck yall talken about but I see jellyfish and by god do I love dem on bread.
Some of my favorite jellyfish (sorry if I go on a tanget and vear off jellyfish)
are the Stygiomedusa gigantea, which I believe is also called the blanket jellyfish, but like dude look up a video of it moving it is chilling and fantastic! This thing is 10 meters long, so not the largest here, but ohohoho look at my love
It is a deep sea jellyfish and is one of the largest invertebrate predators known. However, according to Cambridge, it has been consistently recorded in the twilight and sunlight depth zones down south so do with that what you will :)
If we want to keep going down the large and length category of ocean creatures, allow me to introduce the current longest recorded ocean animal. A deep sea siphonophore that clocks in at around 46 meters; my beautiful death halo
Technically siphonophores are hundreds upon hundreds of tinier organisms that grouped together to make a bigger one, but for all intents and purposes, this is one animal. Some of them are incredibly beautiful!
However there is also ones not so pretty, main one was something I saw a month or so ago and it looked like someone had fused like a dozen human limbs together and they were flailing to move and jesus christ yall can go mentally scar yourselves.
Man I canāt find a good picture but Deepsea Oddities has a really good video on them (and on other ocean related things⦠mostly deep sea)
Let! That! Baby! Eat!!!!!!

Weāll never die
For future confused Tumblr cockroaches, this post is about Facebook and itās affiliated sites, Instagram and WhatsApp, temporarily crashing on October 4th, 2021.
We all gathered together to celebrate our refusal to fucking die and put a collective middle finger up to Mark Zuckerberg.
Like or reblog to flip Mark Zuckerberg off and receive good vibes :)
additional context: apparently this outage is global, longest thus far in facebook's history, and follows close on the heels of a whistleblower coming forward with proof of facebook knowing the way their sites run causes harm.

no one ever talks about gimli being not even slightly tempted by the ring. motherfucker had no hesitation just walked up with his axe and immediately tried to wreck it. obviously that didnāt work but like, the ring had zero visible effect on him. amazing⦠gold sickness in the line of durin WHOMST?? not in gimli son of gloin
He wasnāt going to let himself be embarrassed in front of all these fucking ELVES
the ring: gimli son of gloin you can have your deepest desires if you just take me~
gimli: oh?!
elrond: the ring tempts all who come into contact with it
gimli: my deepest desire is to not look like a lilābitch in front of all these fucking elves

thank god for the mythbusters though because it used to be that whenever i knew i had insomnia iād just kind of accept it and stay up doing whatever until my morning classes and spend the day feeling like shit
but then they did an episode where they established that even just fucking laying there for a half hour, not even sleeping just laying there and not even for an hour, makes a significant difference and youāll feel way better
it has made a huge difference in my life to know that itās okay if i canāt fall asleep, it takes a lot of the pressure off and ironically helps me fall asleep better
ā¦i did not know this, thank you
If anyone wants to look it up, the episode was specifically the Deadliest Catch crossover ep, and the myth was that itās better/safer when working a 30 hour shift to take a 20 minute nap every six hours rather than try to power through. They did an obstacle course test, one without naps and one with, and even though they couldnāt even sleep half the time the naps resulted in their scores doubling.
So actually I undersold it, even if itās 7:40 and your alarm goes off at 8 just lie down and shut your eyes and it will still be better than nothing
This was immensely huge for me as someone with anxiety issues. I used to drive myself delirious trying to ācalm down before I went to sleepā by staying up and just working myself into a panic. Having this knowledge and knowing that laying down and closing my eyes is a better option and counts as rest was way more helpful, eased my mind and actually sends you to sleep faster.
Sarah: *Iām* the Goblin Queen, bitches - you go wave your fans somewhere else.
(From Labyrinth: The Ultimate Visual History)
The Labyrinth commentaries are an Absolute Fucking Delight, seriously - from Goblins of the Labyrinth Ā to the deluxe edition DVDs, they are replete with balls-out nerdery from Froud/Henson/Lucas, over-the-top teenage delight from Jennifer Connely who, at 14, got to SLOW DANCE WITH DAVID BOWIE!!!!!!!!!ā¦and, wonder of wonders, sheer fucking dorkiness in the person of aforementioned rock god.
Likeā¦
-He kept stumbling on the stairs in the ballroom scene. Jennifer keeps laughing at him because, oh my fuck, youāre David Bowie, aged 40something, Rock God Supreme, stupidly beautiful, actually trained in all this shitā¦.and my adolescent ass remembers these stairs are here, but you donāt?!?!???????/
- The script originally called for Jareth and Sarah to kiss, but David Bowie straight up refused because Jennifer Connely was a minor and he was a grown-ass adult.
- Henson wanted a famous musician to play the Goblin King and had debated casting Michael Jackson, until David Bowie came over andā¦hopped up onto the table, and, with a wicked gleam in his eye, pulled a bone flute out of his pocket, hopped up onto the table, and, crouching thereon, played it at him and Henson was likeĀ āthat is the Goblin King right thereā
- Jennifer was apparently an absolute dream to work with and they didnāt realise how dangerous some of the stunts she acted were until they saw an actual teenager, say, going down the shaft of hands
- David Bowie was TERRIFIED OF HEIGHTS. Ā During the Diamond Dogs tour in the 1970s, he got stuck on an elevating chair on stage, and later, in the 80s, during Glass Spider, he had an elevated prop fucking PRECIPITATELY DESCEND under him. Ā Nonetheless, he did a lot of the Escher Room stuff himself - not all of it, some of it is a stunt guy, but damn, for a dude with acrophobia, doing ANY of it is impressive.
- Basically Jennifer Connely and David Bowie are/were fantastic to work with, and Jim Henson, who decided of his own free will to work with a baby, a teenager, numerous chickens, and a neurotic musician, was a madman. Ā A magnificent madman, but a madman nonetheless.
Reblogging for this glorious comment. Thanks @tyrannousstars!
@setepenre-set
Okay, I NEEEEEED to see those.
The bone flute was actually made for David Bowie by Jim Henson and Brian Froud, which they gave to him when they went to ask if heād be interested in the role. But he did then hope up on the table and totally get into character with it.
So yāall know who the choreographer for this film was, right?
(She went by her first, rather than middle, name back then)
I love The Labyrinth
Technically true.
He got the job.
I loved them SO MUCH I couldnāt resist.

Posting mostly for the cute vaccine booty.
This was a little tough to source because this was originally in Chinese. That said, I *think* this is the artist's bilibili page.

Uhhhh..... heads up Amazon device users, I guess????
Heres how to turn it off btw:
1. Open your devices Alexa app
2. Go to settings
3. Select "Account Settings"
4. Select "Amazon Sidewalk"
5. Turn it off
Tweet by Dunny ( @DunnyInvests ): What the fuck
Amazon devices will soon automatically share your internet with neighbors. "If you use Alexa, Echo, or any other Amazon device, you have only 10 days to opt out." [Included is a link to the news of Amazon Sidewalk on arstechnica.com .]
Amazon's decision to make Sidewalk an opt-out service rather than an opt-in one is also telling. The company knows the only chance of the service gaining critical mass is to turn it on by default, so that's what it's doing. Fortunately, turning Sidewalk off is relatively painless. It involves:
Opening the Alexa app
Opening More and selecting Settings
Selecting Account Settings
Selecting Amazon Sidewalk
Turning Amazon Sidewalk Off
Additional corroborating information at this link:
The company's Sidewalk mesh network goes live June 8. The good news is that you can turn it off.
Thank you for the link!
Important info: The date that Amazon Sidewalk goes live is June 8th, 2021.
I think it's interesting how the two big holidays we celebrate today have completely exchanged places over their lifetimes.
When it started, Towel Day was very much a memorial. The date - May 25th - has no textual significance whatsoever. Rather, like the feast day of a Saint, it is the anniversary of Douglas Adams' death. The observance with the towels and all is/was a Fandom reference, but the purpose of the holiday was to honor the memory of a Great Man - and how more appropriately than with a bit of silliness? And in the, what is it, 20? more? years since his death, the memorial aspect has been eroded away, until it is now basically a celebration of the work more than the man, fun unalloyed by grief, a way to fly your geek colors. And perhaps that's what he would want in the end.
The Glorious 25th of May is exactly the opposite. It is - or was - purely a Fandom thing. It's a holiday in text, and we celebrate it alongside the characters because, well, Night Watch is a frickin amazing book and deserves to be celebrated. And there's admittedly always been a melancholic aspect, deriving from the text itself, but the date and the celebration were ultimately fictional. What I used to say is that I celebrated both, but I celebrated Towel Day harder because it commemorated something real.
And then Terry Pratchett died.
And this silly fandom thing we were already doing proved a ready made memorial to honor the memory of a Great Man. The fan art now us bursting with lilac covered fedoras. It now celebrates the man in addition to (perhaps even more than) the work.
I always wondered if Pratchett chose May 25th in honor of Adams. And I wonder what this day will look like in another 20 years, when the grief of this death has faded as well.
GNU Terry Pratchett. GNU Douglas Adams.
Happy Memorial Day.

Thereās a regular at the fabric superstore. Sheās at least 80 years old, and she just got back into sewing after giving it up for 40 years. Weāll call her Irma.
I love Irma.
Irma is constantly surprised by the newfangled sewing gadgets our store sells. Today she bought some extra-fine glass-head pins and a magnetic pincushion. As Iām ringing her purchases up, she tells me very seriously, ādid you know, if youāre careful, you can sew RIGHT OVER those pins? You donāt need to take them out!ā
I told her that I liked that you canāt accidentally melt the head of the glass pins with your iron, and she nodded. āThey used to all be like that, but times changed.ā
I love old sewing machines and asked what kind of machine she has, and she goes, āOh, itās an old Singer Featherweight that my husband bought me when we were first married. Itās probably not worth anything anymore, but the thing sews fine. Have you seen the ones those girls over thereāā indicating the sewing machine sub-store in my location āāhave? Those things go in every direction and the needle always comes to the top when you stop sewing! Imagine how handy that is!ā
I mention that I used to sew on my grandmotherās Featherweight but now thereās a intra-family war about who owns Grandmaās Featherweight and so no one gets to use it. Itās genuinely the best portable straight-stitch machine Iāve ever used.
I warn her to never let anyone tell her that Featherweight isnāt worth something. āI know, I miss my husband and itās always going to have a place in my heart, just like your grandmaās.ā
āI mean, Irma, thereās that, but theyāre also worth a really notable amount of money. The Singer Featherweight is really financially valuable. I almost never see them for sale around here for less than about $400, and thatās in bad condition.ā
āItās a good thing my husbandās dead, honey, because if you told him that he managed to buy a sewing machine thatās worth more in 2021 than he bought it for in 1950, well, heād be so smug that I just wouldnāt be able to tolerate driving home with him.ā
