have you guys heard about the greenland shark. some crazy shit happening there.
they are sexually mature at ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS OLD.
their (live!) young gestate for. wait for it. eight to eighteen (??) YEARS. can have up to 10 at a time. good grief.
longest lifespan of any vertebrate, up to five hundred years
toxic flesh
has giant eyes but is usually blind because of a weird little crustacean that's evolved to live on and eat their eyes. this doesn't seem to bother them much.
lives in deep cold water and has the lowest swim speed and tail-beat frequency for its size across all fish species. just generally lives life in extreme slow motion
largest genome of any shark
eats everything including moose and polar bears
ma'am you are delightfully strange and I'm privileged to share a planet with you
this post prompted me to refresh my memory on Greenland Shark Facts and this detail about how they feed goes so hard
just vacuuming up their unsuspecting prey. whole !
Good news good news good news! Recent research suggests the eye parasites do NOT blind them!
Dorota Skowronska-Krawczyk sits in her office, eyes fixed on the computer monitor in front of her. "You see it move its eye," says the UC Ir
I <3 you a normal amount Greenland sharks
Mate, youâve got a chubby lizard on your dashboard
Graced by Geckolepis typica from Madagascar. I love that theyâre quite round creatures and then they have these dainty little toes. Also, their scales are full bone and both scale and skin come off when they get grabbed, which isâŚunpleasant. Consequently, catching these geckos for research without damaging them requires special techniques. 19th century researchers used bundles of cotton wool, but I imagine this wasnât very effective, because cotton still has a lot of friction and the friction would pull the skin and scales off. In my (quite extensive) experience, the best technique is to carefully and quickly flick the geckos from their tree trunk or branch into an open dry plastic bag using a finger or stick.
'scuse me, Mr @markscherz, does it harm the gecko for the scales to come off?
like, of course it harms them but... can they grow back? like how some lizards can drop their tails and eventually the tails grow back
Not only do they grow back, but they come back so well that we cannot even tell where they have ripped off before. This is very weird, because when a lizard loses its tail, it is very obvious where it has been lost and regrown. Not so these chaps. They seek out a humid place to hide, and within a few weeks, skin and scales have started to regrow. The fact that they can do this so well is the reason a team has just sequenced their genome. I believe it is hoped that the skin regeneration tech they have built into their cells could eventually be harnessed for human skin grafts.
I have a sinking feeling about Qifrey and where his story is headed.
MASSIVE spoilers and maybe slightly long-winded theorizing below the cut.

So what ARE your opinions on field vs water retting? Iâm gonna farm some fiber this year
Water retting makes flax a beautiful golden color, but field retting is easier to keep an eye on.
ALSO, I've come to the conclusion that Tolkein's Teleri elves did field retting for the sails of the swan ships, because field retting leaves the flax a beautiful silvery gray, and while all flax will eventually bleach to white with washing in lye and sun the sails are supposed to be pale and the silver would suit the aesthetic better than the golden color you get from water retting. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
Oh youâre SO right about that. Now Iâm thinking about elven textile manufacturingâŚ.
Welcome to our super niche nerd Tolkien Elves Textile Work Fan Club. Me and @batsintheshadows are founding members. We both have Opinions about linen and nettle fiber.
The amount of time they have to master stuff no arthritis or aging eyes their lace craft is probably sickenly good.
THAT'S WHAT WE'RE SAYING LIKE
These MF folks can casually spend 300 years mastering bobbin lace and then can casually spend 100 years making one full length entire ass bobbin lace DRESS out of linen spun as fine as a sigh. Can you fucking IMAGINE the absolute Bullshit they get up to with fancy weaving.
And you'd be far less likely to lose techniques to time. Like, there's a bunch of stuff we don't know about even just flax processing, because most of the people who were insanely good at it lived before the world wars. The world wars messed up linen production at scale in a lot of Europe, and people didn't have the resources to get back to it until after a lot of the experts had already died of old age.
Old age is not an issue for the elves. Quite aside from having the individual ability to spend time on their work, you just wouldn't lose the experts.
My guilt has been part of an effort to reprint the Davison green book, in cooperation with Marguerite Davison's descendants. Imagine if we just, like, still had Marguerite Davison.
I mean, we can't know how many techniques were lost to FĂŤanor's BS, but I bet there were some Teleri sail weavers with special techniques. But at least time itself wouldn't be the problem.
@systlin if I could make a formal introduction: @dreamingdormouse is one of my best friends from college who is a veritable encyclopedia of knowledge on many topics but esp. fiber craft, using spreadsheets in novel ways, and fantasy literature.
@dreamingdormouse, @systlin is a distant cousin of mine who does swords, native flora restoration and takes the piss on bad fantasy and sci-fi authors.
I think you two would be excellent friends.
"Getting into this hobby is actually super cheap and easy!!!! First, start with a section of land and a house that you own and can mess up at your discretion"
The original inspiration for this is that I've looked up a lot of basic woodworking stuff multiple times to try and make better and better tortoise enclosures, and ended up in this trap every time lmao
"It's much cheaper to just buy this size of wood and take it to your table saw" WHAT FUCKING TABLE SAW
the secret is that people who have a garage with a table saw are constantly looking for reasons to justify that use of space and money. so if you find somebody with a table saw and ask if you can use it, you're actually doing them a huge favor by justifying the saw continuing to take up space. "of course I need a table saw. what if somebody needs to upgrade a turtle enclosue."
#1. go to local gay bar 2. find group of 50-60 yr olds. 3. ask if anyone has a table saw 4. watch eyes light up
With this four step plan you get a place to practice woodworking with optional sex with some older men
For anyone wanting it, they can cut your material for you at most Home Depots if you need it
But can I have sex with older men there
I am never leaving this site
There are no servals in this post
Thanks đ

oh my god he did a bobbin lace. out of parachute cords, both military and protective in nature. of the guy who saved someone from the water and then ran to fire his gun with his fine ass out. This is so gorgeous and so gay
HEY @sweaterkittensahoy LOOK AT THIS
Genuinely one of my very favorite pieces of art ever. It's a masterpiece of design, materials, and execution.
I never get tired of seeing it.
Japanese is an incredibly fun and rewarding language (if youâve ever wanted to learn it for ANY reason, most importantly including the âsillyâ reasons) but the fearmongering and capitalist intervention involved in the language learning process have given it a reputation as an âimpossible taskâ for English speakers, leading to confusion and dkn learners and weird pessimist attitudes about the whole thing. In this thread I will explain how to effectively learn and retain Japanese. This is a tried, tested and true method; probably 99% of all people who try to learn Japanese give up, but everyone Iâve met who has tried and stuck with this has been at or above N3-N4 after 6 months or less including me
You can teach yourself Japanese for free if you have a little free time every day and a computer
1. Drill yourself on hiragana and katakana. These are the phonetic building blocks of Japanese, think of them as equivalent to english letters. This site is a good resource in general. Once you have a solid grasp on this, DO NOT LINGER HERE; move to step 2. You will master kana later.
2. Download Anki. This is a flashcard service. They have a paid app if youâre willing to invest for it, but if not, they have a mobile website (create an account and sync it with your computer).
This is the deck youâre going to download. Import it to Anki and do this every day. I have learned the hard way (twice) that skipping this is bad. If you become overwhelmed, you can change the number of new cards and reviews by clicking the cog next to the name of the deck!
3. Cure Dolly (Youtube, grammar) + transcript. She has kind of a posh accent, you might want to turn subtitles on. Watch a few videos when you feel like it but most importantly set up 4 and 5 as soon as possible
4. Yomitan (must have) is a browser extension that functions as a pop-up dictionary. you need to install dictionaries for it to work. here are some dictionaries you can use with yomitan and explanations of what they do
5. READ. DO NOT LET YOURSELF GET STUCK BEFORE THIS STEP. JUST READ!!!! Most people who fail to learn Japanese do so because they are afraid of not being ready to move on, which is counterproductive. Just read. When you were a child did you spend years on vocab and grammar before reading? No I bet you did not. Pick something to read and learn what you donât already know by reading in Japanese.
Jiten.moe has a list of novels and visual novels that you can read on your computer sorted by difficulty. So does jpdb. Thereâs also this document. Thereâs also this document. Hey look this website is cool too
For visual novels: download LunaHook. It âhooksâ to your VN and allows you to use Yomitan on words you donât know. Turn off the translation feature, it does nothing to help you learn
For literary texts: ttsu e-reader supports epub and htmlz files.
You can also learn Japanese by watching anime, but itâs a little more convoluted and requires a lot more patience.
For manga, utilize Mangatan, but I donât recommend this right out the gate because when youâre first learning sentence structure youâll want something with complete sentences.
Set your computer up for mining vocab before you start reading. Once you finish your kaishi deck, you can drill your mining cards (I didnât do mine until after finishing kaishi because it was too much).
Most importantly: reading is going to be hard at first. It is going to piss you off. You need to muscle through with this because this is where the bulk of your learning will happen. After a while you will just feel like reading because you love reading! Try not to pick something too hard for your first read, but if youâre interested in the story you might be able to muscle through something a little tougher.
Remember to consult yomitan and cure dolly where needed, thatâs what itâs there for. As you can see I am quite normal about the Japanese language, so if you have any other questions or need help with anything else feel free to shoot me an ask and I will get back to you promptly. Japanese is not your enemy and it is not impossible. It is your friend
repeating this to myself forever and ever
Not gonna lie, encouraging my clients to write a shitty first draft is sometimes half my job. It's also half my job when I'm just writing for myself. There's real existential anguish in wanting to be A Writer, but not knowing how to make your story follow the exciting mix of ideas and impressions in your head.
But the shitty first draft is essential. Or, at least, giving yourself the freedom to write poorly. It's absolutely 1000% easier to improve bad writing than to write something perfect from nothing. However, it's also a lot easier to write something pretty darn good when you loosen up enough to have fun again!
When I was training to be a battered womenâs advocate, my supervisor said something that really blew my mind:
âYou can always assume one thing about your clients; and that is that they are doing their best. Always assume everyone is doing their best. And if theyâre having a day where their best just isnât that great, or their best doesnât look like your best, you have to be okay with that.â
Any now whenever anyone in my life, either a friend or a client, frustrates me, disappoints me, or pisses me off, I just tell myself They are doing their best. Their best isnât that great today, but I have days where my best isnât that great either.Â
Op Iâd like to thank you for sharing this. Ever since the first time Iâve read it Iâve held it in my mind and it really has helped me to be kinder to others and to myself.
