Bonnie also received an invitation to the Mikaelson Ball, from the last vampire she ever wanted to speak to.
or
Elijah asks Bonnie for a favor, and she makes sure he keeps his word.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Bonnie flipped the ornate invitation over in her hands again and read the neat script written on the back.
I know we did not part on friendly terms, but I have a simple request to ask of you. Call me.
His number was already dialed on her phone, but she hadn’t put the call through yet.
Why did he send her this invitation? What did he want from her? Why did he think she would want to help him? Was this even from Elijah, or was Klaus an excellent forger? Or was this a new threat entirely?
She sighed and pressed the call button on her phone. It only took two rings for him to answer. “Miss Bennett,” he greeted before she even had a chance to speak.
“Awfully presumptuous,” she muttered.
“My apologies. Are you interested in my offer or is this a courtesy rejection call?”
“Your offer?” She stared at her phone incredulously. “You didn’t offer anything. You asked me for a favor.”
“Yes, and I will offer you something in exchange to make it worth your while.” His condescending tone made her grit her teeth. “Now, are we going to continue arguing semantics, or are you willing to hear me out?”
“...What is your deal?”
“Thank you for being reasonable. Now, as I mentioned, I have a simple request. My mother has sent a special invitation, much like the one I sent you, to the lovely Elena, asking her for a talk. I fear she has ulterior motives, and I would like you to listen in and report everything back to me.”
“You can’t do your own eavesdropping?”
“No. She’s taken to using privacy spells in the house. I know a counterspell that will allow you to listen through it, but it requires a strong witch to be in close proximity. Just come to the party and I will have everything prepared for you.”
Bonnie chewed the inside of her cheek. Elena hadn’t mentioned any special notes from the Original witch on her invitation – then again, Bonnie hadn’t mentioned Elijah’s note either, even when Caroline brought up Klaus’ creepy addition to her invite. This couldn’t lead anywhere good. The last time Esther had alone-time with a doppleganger, she created a new species. And with Elena’s good nature and determination to find the good in people, she could easily imagine her getting suckered into being the linchpin of an evil plot.
But that didn’t mean she wanted to help Elijah either.
“And what would I get in exchange?”
“Keeping an eye on your friend isn’t enough of a reward?”
“You said you would make an offer, Mikaelson. Are you trying to set a record for breaking your word?”
Elijah chuckled, a warm sound that sounded wrong coming from him. “I did say that, didn’t I? Very well. I propose that in exchange for your help, I will owe you a favor at a later date.”
“No.”
“Pardon?”
“You expect me to put my ass on the line for a vague promise that you’re going to do something for me later? Hell no.”
“Vulgar language doesn’t suit you, Miss Bennett.”
“Oh you haven’t heard vulgar from me, Mikaelson.” If they were having this conversation face to face, Bonnie could have him on his knees right now, begging for mercy. “You want my help, you’re going to have to give me something more reliable than your word.”
Elijah was silent for a long moment. She’d almost hung up just to make her point when he spoke up again. “Very well. Name your price.”
She hadn’t expected him to agree so quickly. She almost asked for time to think about it, but thought better of it. Knowing him, he would deny that this conversation ever happened when she finally came back around to it.
“Rebekah said your mother got the spell to make vampires from her companion Ayana.”
“That is correct.”
“Is she my ancestor?”
“...Yes.”
Her heart quickened and she was glad he wasn’t in front of her to hear it. “Do you have her grimoire?”
“I can get it.”
“Get it to me before the ball. Then I’ll be your spy.”
“Very well. I will deliver the grimoire before the ball along with the dress.”
“The dress?”
“Given the short notice, I didn’t think you would have anything prepared for an event of this caliber, so I arranged for a custom gown. I hope you find that acceptable.”
She was prepared to snap at him for assuming she wouldn’t have something nice enough for the ball, but bit her tongue. She most likely did have something, or Caroline would help her get something. But, she had to admit, she was curious what Elijah had gotten for her.
“A custom gown? I wasn’t aware you had my measurements.”
“I gave the dressmaker an approximation and a few photos.”
“That is extremely creepy, you know that?” She didn’t even want to know where he had gotten photos of her.
“I call it efficient.”
“You would,” she muttered, not caring that he would hear or how he would take it. Then, she hung up.
-------------------------------
A few hours after the invitation arrived, just after lunch, two boxes arrived on Bonnie’s porch.
The smaller box held a very old tome. The pages were brittle and the writing was faded and almost illegible in some places. But the binding was impeccable, brand new with a carefully detailed cover.
There was also a small card with Elijah’s careful script on it.
I considered having the pages copied, but I thought you would prefer a look at the original first. If you decide you want a newer copy that is less likely to crumble in your hands, that can be arranged. No additional favors required.
She set the card aside and returned to the tome.
The pages were extremely old, though well preserved. She was almost afraid to touch them, turning each one carefully. A newer copy would be nice, but he’d been right to think she’d want some time with the original.
This was Ayana’s hand. She could see it in the brushstrokes, feel it in the weight of the words on the page. She didn’t even need it to be translated. She wondered if that was a witchy thing or if Ayana had predicted the changing of language and created some spell to ensure her descendants would always be able to understand her work.
She wished Grams were here so she could ask.
Before she opened the next box, she decided she would make her own copy. She wondered if Elijah would give her the tools to make it, favor-free. It would technically be him “arranging” for a new copy, after all.
Inside the large box was a massive gown. What must’ve been miles of fabric carefully folded into a box that Bonnie would never be able to get back into. Emerald green sparkled with jewels (some of which may or may not have been actual emeralds) embroidered onto the skirt in flowing, flowery patterns. The bodice had built-in breast support, meaning she could wear it alone. There were more jewels sewn in there, continuing the flower theme into the sleeves that rested just off of her shoulder.
There was also a pair of long, green, silk gloves that came to just above her elbows.
It all fit her perfectly.
Her phone buzzed with a text as she admired herself in the mirror.
I trust the book and the dress are to your liking?
She rolled her eyes and backed out of the text menu to message Caroline instead. She needed makeup ideas.
----------------------------------
Elijah informed her three hours before the ball that he would be sending a car to pick her up early. Apparently, he wanted extra time to talk and explain the counter spell before most of the guests arrived and the family would be on high alert for trouble.
That meant she couldn’t get ready with her friends like they’d planned, but she still did the best she could. She thought Caroline would be very impressed with her eyeliner work. Her hair was swept up into a neat bun with two soft curls framing her face.
For the 15 minutes after she completed her look and before the car arrived, she felt like a princess.
Some people had already begun to arrive when the car pulled up to the front steps of the manor; mostly people from the city government and some others she didn’t recognize. None of her friends would be there for at least another hour.
Elijah was waiting for her just inside the doors. “Miss Bennett.”
“Mr. Mikaelson.” She slid her arm into his offered elbow and allowed him to guide her further into the renovated manor. She couldn’t help but look around the space; Klaus had the eye of an artist and it showed in his work on the house. She did try not to look too impressed though.
“I am pleased you were able to join us, though I wish the night didn’t come with such...complications.”
She hummed. “You make it sound like you would’ve invited me even if you didn’t need me.”
“Of course,” he said. “It may not have been as personal, but I would’ve set one aside for you regardless. Not doing so would’ve been a terrible oversight.”
She didn’t know what to say to that.
They discreetly made their way up to the second level and he guided her into a small sitting room. “The room next door is the study my mother has taken to hiding away in,” he explained. “You will do the counterspell in this room to listen in on whatever she discusses with Elena. When you are ready, come downstairs and find me. We can find a place to have our own private discussion while the others are dancing.”
Bonnie nodded. “Show me how the counterspell works.”
----------------------
The moment she and Elijah arrived back on the ground floor, they separated. Bonnie knew some of her friends would be arriving soon and she didn’t want them to be suspicious. There were enough people around to blend her arrival in without raising any eyebrows – though that may have more to do with the Salvatores causing a fuss than any discretion on her part.
She had to admit, schemes and certain murder aside, the Mikaelsons knew how to throw a party. They invited all the right people and had a near endless supply of drinks and food entering the room. The decorations were darling, but not too eye catching as to distract from the party, and even the Christmas lights hanging from the staircase managed to not be tacky.
She supposed their penchant for plotting to topple kingdoms would translate into event planning as well.
She’d hoped to speak with Elena before anything happened, but the Salvatores kept her busy and the next thing she knew, Elijah was calling for a first dance.
She allowed him to take her arm as they entered the ballroom.
“I thought we were being discreet,” she murmured as the music began.
“I didn’t want to take the risk one of my brothers would try to corner you,” he responded, not missing a step.
She hummed. “Well, Klaus seems preoccupied with Caroline and Finn looks like he would rather be back in the coffin.”
“And the only thing my youngest brother, Kol, loves more than causing trouble is flirting with witches. If he got his hands on you, you would be occupied for the remainder of the evening. And we can’t have that, can we?” He smirked as they spun around the edge of the dance. “Though now I see there is a new wrinkle in the plan.”
Bonnie shook her head. “I wouldn’t worry about the brothers.”
“Damon seems rather determined to keep Elena out of harm’s way.”
“Elena wants to speak with your mother.” She didn’t have to talk to her friend to know that. She would want to hear Esther out at the very least. And if there was something nefarious going on, she would want the chance to warn her friends. “She’s as stubborn as she is compassionate. She’ll find a way.”
The dance required her to switch partners, and she was lucky enough to end up with Matt. “I didn’t know you were invited,” he said as she slid into his arms. “We could’ve come together if you’d told me.”
“You didn’t tell me either,” she pointed out. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Elena and Stefan sneaking away. “And a car was sent for me anyway.”
Matt’s eyebrows raised. “Someone really wanted you here. Are you okay? You haven’t been threatened or anything, have you?”
“Not yet, but the night is still young.” Her joke fell flat. “I’m fine, Matt. And I can take care of myself. I’m more worried about you. Besides Elena, you’re the most vulnerable one here.”
“I can take care of myself,” he echoed, but she heard the uncertainty in his voice.
“Hey,” she said, lowering her voice. “if you start feeling unsafe, come find me. We’ll ditch together and go get fries at the Grille.”
Matt relaxed, and she wished she could too. “And a milkshake.”
“Only if we get to use your employee discount.” He laughed, and she joined in.
For a few minutes, at least, things felt normal again.
---------------------------------------
It was less than half an hour after the first dance that Elijah came to get her. “Elena is heading up to my mother’s study,” he muttered, just loud enough for her to hear.
She nodded. “Keep an eye on Matt; I don’t trust your sister.”
He nodded, and she left, not thinking about why she’d asked him for that favor, or why she assumed he would agree to it.
It had only been a few hours; she couldn’t be going soft on him already.
She watched Elena enter the study before dashing into the small room next door and setting up the counterspell as quietly as she could. She probably could have been faster, but she would rather do it correctly.
As it was, she began to hear their conversation mid sentence.
“-the witch Ayana preserved my body with a spell. She was a good friend of mine. She is an ancestor of your friend, Bonnie.”
Bonnie relaxed, only slightly. Elijah hadn’t lied to her, about the spell or her ancestry.
That calm disappeared the moment Esther requested Elena’s blood. Doppleganger blood and secret rituals were not going to lead anywhere good, no matter how nicely Esther dressed it up.
“Elijah is more suspicious than the others, so he may need more persuasion. But they must all drink at the toast in order to be linked as one.”
Her heart sank like a stone. She knew it. She didn’t need to hear the full explanation to know what the real plan was.
Esther was going to kill them all.
It should make her happy, but it didn’t. As much as she might want Klaus dead (and possibly also Elijah and Rebekah), she knew it couldn’t be that simple. Creating vampires had changed the world; killing them would as well. There would be ripples, aftershocks of a magnitude no one could predict.
Her eyes flew to the clock on the wall. The toast would be happening soon, at the climax of the evening. Elijah would need to know soon. But she couldn’t leave the room now, not with Finn pottering in the hallway waiting to escort Elena back down to the party. He would get suspicious and probably know exactly what she was up to.
There was nothing she could do but wait, and listen.
-----------------------------
Bonnie made her way downstairs as soon as she felt safe to. By that time, the catering staff was already beginning to hand out the champagne for the toast and she didn’t see Elijah anywhere. She considered calling him, but all of her friends were back in the ballroom; they would see, they would wonder, they would as questions.
She tried to wander and look without looking too suspicious, but it was hard with how many people were funneled into the main room of the manor.
By the time she found him, he had a glass in his hand and he was speaking to Elena.
She watched her best friend lie to his face under the heavy gaze of Esther.
It was too late to warn him now; she had to hope he would accept the truth with grace later.
A glass was put in her hand and she held it stiff in her hands as the rest of the party cheered with the Mikaelson family.
-----------------------------
Elijah found her after the crowd dispersed and began to speak, but she quieted him with one finger to her lips. She silently glanced up at his mother, then to his siblings, and he nodded. He offered his arm once again, and she took it.
As they walked, she considered lying to him as Elena had. It’s not as if there was anything he could do about it now; they’d already drunk the blood.
But they had made a deal, and Elijah had already fulfilled his part. And she still couldn’t shake the terrible feeling that Esther’s success wouldn’t really be a victory.
“We should be able to speak freely out here,” he said as he led her into the gardens at the back of the house.
“Can’t your siblings hear for miles?”
“Only if they’re really paying attention. And it’s loud enough inside that they shouldn’t mind anything out here.” He stopped them just by a fountain and allowed her to sit and rest her feet. “Elena informs me my mother simply wished to apologize to her and that she means to keep our family together.”
“Elena lied.”
His eyes narrowed and his neck snapped back to look at the house. “She promised-”
“Maybe if you hadn’t asked her in the middle of a party where your mother was watching her and your siblings were listening, she could’ve been more honest.” She did think Elena had laid it on a bit thick, but so had Elijah. “Your mother is the real liar here.”
Elijah’s jaw clenched and he nodded once, returning his gaze to Bonnie. “Yes, you are right. What is she really planning?”
“She wants to kill you all.” She elected to leave out the part about Esther seeing it as her sacred duty to do so.
He was silent for a long moment. “I see. Did she mention how?”
“She performed a ritual tonight to bind you all together. When one falls, so will the rest of you.”
“Performed a- And you didn’t think it would be prudent to warn-”
“I didn’t have time,” Bonnie snapped. “I was trapped in that room while I waited for Elena to leave and Finn to quit standing guard and then I couldn’t find you and then the toast was happening and it was too late.”
“The toast?”
Bonnie sighed. “Your mother put a drop of Elena’s blood into the champange you and your siblings drank.”
He hummed. “That alone wouldn’t be enough to bind us. There must be another part that she has yet to complete. There will be a spell and she’ll likely need more blood. There may still be time to stop her. Perhaps I can delay her completing the ritual.”
“And then she would try again. And it’s not just her you’d have to delay; Finn is working with her. And coffin time or no, he’s just as strong and just as cunning as you are.”
Elijah growled. “Of course Finn is going along with this scheme. I never should’ve let him out-” he stopped himself. “That complicates things. We will need to-”
“Hold on, we? Our deal is done. I wore your dress and did the spell and I told you what your mother is up to. We both held up our ends of the bargain, and now it’s done. You can’t expect me to-”
Elijah turned his head suddenly and held his hand up. “Quiet.”
“Wha-” His finger was on her lips and she jerked back. “Do not touch-”
In a flash, he was on the bench next to her and holding her very close. Very intimately. He bent his face close to hers, almost close enough for his lips to touch. “Someone is coming.”
“I don’t-”
His lips covered hers, swallowing her gasp as his hands tightened around her. It took her brain a moment to catch up to his rouse. She tentatively put her hands on his shoulders as his hand traveled down the back of her dress.
She had spent a lot of time thinking about Elijah Mikaelson since the night of the ritual that killed her friend and life as she knew it. She’d thought about what she would say to him, how she might make good on her promise to kill him and his brother since he had failed to keep his word. She’d thought about making him pleas for his life, giving him reason to fear her. She’d thought about putting him on his knees.
She had not, in all her fantasies, imagined kissing him in the back garden of his family home to disguise their plotting.
She heard the footsteps approaching and tried to remain relaxed. Elijah was quite a good kisser, at least.
“-bloody horses and- Oh, my, brother….” Klaus’ chuckle let them break apart. Bonnie hid her face with her glove as Elijah released her. “Oh, don’t let me interrupt. It’s about time you allowed yourself some simple pleasures….”
“Niklaus,” Elijah sighed, “the very point of coming out here was to have some privacy. Now, if you don’t mind…”
“Of course, of course….” He continued laughing as he walked away.
Bonnie stared at Elijah’s face as he watched his brother walk away. She tried not to stare at his lips or think about what they felt like on hers or how little she would mind if she felt them again or-
“I think it would be wise if we returned to the party.” He stood and held his hand out to help her up.
She took it, and they walked back to the party.
“You said you could arrange for a newer copy of Ayana’s grimiore, no favors needed,” she said after a few moments.
“I would.”
“...What if I asked for a blank tome and a nice fountain pen set?”
“I’ll have them delivered in the morning,” he said.
Her grip on his arm tightened, and they continued their walk in silence.
Those of you that enjoyed my complaints and ranting about The Secret Circle might be pleased by another liveblog experience I am toying with: Sight Unseen rewatch #7
Alternative option would be my rewatch of Tracker in the hopes I can get more people involved on the "this family is Not Normal" side of my ranting about this show

For the fourth year in a row now, it's time for Small Fandom Summer! Join me for Small Fandom Summer! It's real easy to play:
Make a fanwork for something that has fewer than 1000 English-language works on AO3
Post it to AO3
And then you've done it! You've made a thing and you've diversified the fandom ecosystem! You're basically a hero.
Q: The fandom I want to create for has more than 1000 English-language works on AO3, but the specific pairing I want to write for has fewer than that. Does that count?
A: Yes!
Q: What if it has more than 1000 English-language works on AO3, but, like, just barely?
A: Okay!
Q: What if it actually has a lot more than 1000 English-language works on AO3, but it still feels small?
A: Sure!
Q: What if I don't want to post it to AO3? What if I don't even have an AO3 account? Can I post it somewhere else?
A: Wherever!
Q: What if--
A: Just do a thing, friend. Make a thing. Share the thing. This is not meant to be restrictive; this is meant to be inspirational. Create the fanworks you want to see in the world. Make a stranger happy by appealing to their niche interests. Bring joy.
And if you want to give yourself some silly little Steam-like achievement badges to commemorate your accomplishments, well, you're in luck! I've made a bunch of them right here! You can grab the ones that apply to your work and paste them wherever you like and feel good about what you've done. Here's a few of my favorites:
So you see? This is meant to be silly and fun.
There's nowhere to sign up. There's nothing to commit to. There's zero pressure. You just do it if you do it, and don't if you don't. But if you do want to play (yay!), tag your stuff with #small fandom summer so we can all swoop in and appreciate everyone else's efforts.
Just some quick drawings I had done of these three. Although they literally have the same face, I like trying to come up slight differences between them. For example, I'd like to imagine Tatia was older than any of them were at the point when most of the plot happens, hence the slightly different facial proportions between her and the other two. I also like taking into consideration of how they do their makeup, so I had given Katherine sharper shapes for her eyes. And I had also intentionally given Elena the most youthful look out of the three :) I plan on doing full body drawings of them soon. Then, the salvatore brothers... don't know when I'll get to them but I WILL!.. Eventually 😀😄😀
