can't believe I've been calling Scarlet Hollow Avery "a bit of a freak" (affectionate) and then chapter 5 happens and I'm sorry, Avery, I underestimated your freak credentials
Strictly speaking, "ultimate" means "last", not "best". It's often figuratively employed in the latter sense to suggest that the thing so described is the final word on the subject, after which nothing more need be said, but if we're being real technical, describing a game or movie that was so bad it killed its entire franchise as the "ultimate" is in fact correct.
Now I'm thinking about the prefix "pen," which as far as I can think I may have only ever seen in "penultimate"
It's Latin for "nearly" or "almost", and it does pop up in a few other English words. "Penultimate", "penumbra" and "peninsula" are the only ones I can think of that you'd even remotely expect to encounter in everyday speech, though; the rest are all medical or mathematical jargon.

Suddenly struck with a need to explain to you how boat pronouns work (I work in the marine industry).
When you're talking about the design of the boat, you say "it".
When the boat is still being built, your say "it".
When the boat is nearing completion, you can say "it" or "she".
When the boat is floating in the water you probably say "she", unless there is still a lot of work to be done (e.g. no engine yet) then you say "it".
When the boat is officially launched and operating, you say "she". If you continue to say "it" at this point you are not incorrect but suspiciously untraditional. You are not playing the game.
If you are referring to a boat you don't really know anything about you may say "it" ("there's a big boat, it's coming this way"). But if you know its name, it's probably "she" ("there's the Waverley, she's on her way to Greenock").
If you are talking about boats in general, you say "it" ("when a boat is hit by a wave it heels over")
If you speak about a boat in complimentary terms, it's "she" ("she's a grand boat"). If you are being disparaging it may be it, but not necessarily ("it's as ugly as sin", "she's a grotty old tub").
If she has a boy's name, she's still she. "Boy James", "King Edward", "Sir David Attenborough"? The pronoun is she.
If it's a dumb barge (no engine), you say it. But if it's a rowing boat (no engine), you say she.
I hope this has cleared things up so that you may not be in danger of misgendering floating objects.

Not so much my favourite line, but I am always reminded of that one Mystical dialogue where you can talk about the feelings in his paintings... hold on, let me grab the dialogue.
"When I'm working on them it's like I'm channeling whatever's plaguing me into the paint, and when they're done I feel like I've been emptied out, and all the vile things inside me have been sealed away in the canvas. It's why I make so many of them. Sometimes, when I return to a piece, it's almost like I'm offering an invitation for those feelings to slither back under my skin."

I'm not surprised he's willing to kill there. I'm not surprised that those feelings can so easily take him over. I think in the Matricide route, that's exactly what happens - it's only in Tame the Beast route that he's able to snap out of that wave of feeling, gain some amount of control over himself again. ...Listen. I know Reese and Avery have canonically never met. But I see the potential, okay? I think they would click.
It first occurred to me because Avery would totally do TTB route. They probably have the trait for it, too. And then I started thinking about it...
There's the obvious 'supernatural nonhuman meets person extremely excited about the supernatural'. Even before that, though, I think they'd click, if only because of this line from Reese:
"I guess it would be for the best if nothing bad happened. Too bad, though. With your track record, I was hoping we'd run into some unimaginable horrors."
That, and the rest of chapter 4 - Reese wants to see this stuff too. Maybe it's just because it's something different, but it's a desire he could bond with Avery over.
And I think Avery... might be something Reese needs. Having someone who will just accept him, no matter what... that's hard to find.

...Look, I don't generally ship things myself, but I'm not saying you couldn't do a romantic Avery/Reese. You absolutely could. I think Avery would think he was hot.

I don't know that anyone actually ships him with anyone outside Player Scarlet? But I don't know that I'd read Stella/Reese or Kaneeka/Reese. Like do what you want, but I would prefer to read explorations of their friendship. That'd be fun. If anyone knows any good fics for friendship trio, let me know.

I don't know if this counts, but my friend who I was playing scarlet hollow with was very surprised about my insistence on not locking Reese up. Like!! I might see Dr Kelly's reasoning but that does not mean I agree with it!!!

Confession. I don't actually like the way he looks. Actually, y'know what, there's my unpopular opinion. I think Reese looks boring in human form, grotesque in full monster (which I'm sure was entirely the intention, and they did great!), and not particularly interesting in-between either because did they have to have him rip off his shirt completely.

uhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I mean I had a thing I did for a fic where I decided Hilda and Tikala were somehow related? Though nowadays I have different ideas about Tikala (Metta it's Metta they're the same shape)
