in reality, the concept of self-harm is heavily socially constructed and an issue of bodily autonomy. as humans, we seek out physical pain all the time. we eat spicy foods. we get tattoos and piercings. we engage in BDSM. so why do we forbid self-regulation through pain?

when people are told to cover up their scars, when people are kicked out of DBT support groups for self-harming, when people are conditioned to lie about their self-harm to avoid getting sent to the psych ward, you are telling them that their body is not their own.

Like. I'm not fucking playing? It's not toys for me? It's my identity and you should treat it seriously. You wouldn't say that about binary identities, would you?

Yes, trans women exist (and should be welcomed, accepted, and validated) in gay men's spaces. But let's not pretend that trans women on *double checks post* fucking grindr are being treated with respect.

Trans women helped build the gay community. Trans men helped build the lesbian community. Trans women helped build the lesbian community. Trans men helped build the gay community. Nonbinary people have helped build the gay and lesbian communities. We have ALL intersecred with each other before we had the words gay or lesbian or transgender.

4: The same person says, “… and I’ve had that. I’ve had police stop me and pull their guns because I was perceived as a black male.” They lean forward with a furrowed brow as they speak.

5: Text: “If I’m walking around in a baseball hat and a baggy shirt and baggy pants and I go into a store…” The person mimes putting on a baseball cap. They have a shaved head and glasses, and wear a black turtleneck shirt.

6: The same person says, “Then I do get treated like any other black man that would be in a baseball cap with baggy…- they’d be people following me around.” They point with their hand as they speak.

7: Text: “Sometimes going to the bathroom can be a little [bit] of an issue depending on how busty I’m looking.” The person raises an eyebrow. They have a shaved head and wear a black shirt.

8: The same person says, “If I’m not looking really busty I can walk straight into the men’s bathroom and not have them say a damn thing to me.”

9: Text: “I’m a butch woman but I’m a woman nonetheless and if I have to use the restroom there’s a little sign that says ‘Women’!…” A women’s restroom sign fades into the footage of the woman talking and nodding, wearing glasses and a red button down shirt.
