and my take today is that framing misogynistic writing as an "inability to write female characters" subconsciously takes away most of the blame, implying that women are an alien creature compared to men and that it is no fault of the writer because it's out of their skill set. it's not an inability, not a lack of expertise, it's the simple refusal to consider women as individual people and give them the same depth and grace that comes easily to the writer when they write male characters. it's not that christopher nolan, stephen king, james cameron (and frankly anyone using the argument, both professional and hobbyist; yes, that includes fanfic writers) etc can't write women, it's that they just won't. at that point in time it is a conscious decision driven by the laziness to unpack their misogynistic biases, and should be addressed as such

The simple answer is likely true: just misogyny. For me, looking at it backwards helps to solidify it: if men can create complex and empowering heroes like Buffy and Coraline but (obligatory allegedly) harm the real women in their real lives, their creative skills are not connected to or reflective of their beliefs and behaviors. You can be nice to your sisters and women coworkers and friends' girlfriends but still create (however unintentionally) misogynistic art; and you can create feminist art while hurting women. They are separate, and they are both choices, whether active or passive.

the idea that restrooms, locker rooms, etc need to be single-sex spaces in order for women to be safe is patriarchy's way of signalling to men & boys that society doesn't expect them to behave themselves around women. it is directly antifeminist. it would be antifeminist even if trans people did not exist. a feminist society would demand that women should be safe in all spaces even when there are men there.

As I (to be clear, anti-terf) was reading this, there was a part of me that was like "hmm I conceptually agree but still don't know if I'd feel safe." The more I sat with it, I remembered that even in women's locker rooms, I'd usually change in a bathroom stall to hide from their mean comments, or even just from being perceived at all. I remembered not being able to pee even as a child if my guardian (whether male or female parents or grandparents, didn't matter) was speaking to or even looking at me; and I still don't like going to the bathroom with other women (a meme) because that's a private activity to me. I remembered I don't like being naked around anyone I'm not some form of intimate with. It's my own issue with nakedness and bathroom activities, and not at all about sex or gender; and I could address it by going into a bathroom stall in a non-gendered locker room just like I've always done in women's locker rooms. So yeah... if not because we can't imagine men not being inherently dangerous, then why else must there be separate spaces?

i just woke up from a dream where i was being interrogated by a bunch of people asking me if “furbies are kosher” firstly…. im not jewish. secondly……..what the fuck

please stop sending me asks pertaining to the kosher status of furbies. i really do not know. this was just a manifestation of my subconscious. im assuming that they are not kosher because furbies aren’t even food. but who knows! ask a rabbi, if you must. 

Jew here! Furbies are actually worse than unkosher–they are not permissible as food, even for gentiles. This is because the Torah teaches that it is forbidden for any human to eat the meat of an animal that is still alive, and the Furby cannot die.
