I'm here, I'm queer, fuck off if that's a problem for you.
Queer/Trans Representation on TV
Sometimes people like to say x group is more represented than y group and I wanted to throw out some stats I looked up last year for a project I'm working on. I'm sourcing these stats from GLAAD, which has yearly reports on TV representation, focusing on Broadcast, Cable, and, more recently, Streaming. They don't have the same reports for any other media (they have some on video games I think? But I haven't looked into it).
These statistics are limited, and not proof of one type of queer person having it better than any other. They are not proof that anyone has "too much" representation. ALL queer people are extremely underrepresented in media.
This also doesn't reflect how good the representation was. Even though they're main and recurring characters, they still could have negative stereotypes or be otherwise treated terribly by the shows.
The statistics look at regular and recurring characters only, so not one offs, and only characters that have their identity stated, not hinted at. More details can be found on the previously linked site.
Note: For some reason, they only have the total number of characters they looked at for Broadcast TV, not cable or streaming.
I'm only doing a few selections to not bog you down with stats, but you can check the stats yourself to learn more.
2008 - 2009
16 out of 616 (2.6%) regular Broadcast TV characters were queer. The total between Broadcast and Cable was 87 regular characters and 106 including recurring.
4 of all queer characters were trans women.
1 of all queer characters was a trans men.
The did not have statistics for nonbinary characters at this time.
Let's skip a few years.
2015 - 2016
This is the first year streaming is taken into account. Still no stats for total characters for anything but broadcast.
35 out of 881 (4%) regular Broadcast characters were queer. The total regular queer characters between Broadcast, Cable, and Streaming was 162. The total incurring recurring was 271.
6 were trans women.
1 was a trans man.
None were nonbinary.
Let's skip a few years again.
2023 - 2024
39 out of 454 regular Broadcast TV characters were queer. The total regular queer characters between Broadcast, Cable, and Streaming was 296. The total including recurring was 468.
11 were trans women.
5 were trans men.
Nonbinary is tricky because they both say there were 19 nonbinary characters on streaming, but when they broke down the trans stats, they only said 6 were nonbinary. I know not all nonbinary people consider themselves trans, so maybe that's the disconnect?
So either there were 24 or 8 nonbinary characters in total.
And now the most recent report.
2024 - 2025
40 out of 432 regular Broadcast TV characters were queer. The total regular queer characters between Broadcast, Cable, and Streaming was 320. The total including recurring was 489.
24 were trans women.
7 were trans men.
6 were nonbinary.
Summary
From the studies they did for 2008-09, 11-12, 15-16, 18-19, 23-24, and 24-25 there were:
62 trans women.
20 trans men.
And either 34 or 18 nonbinary, depending on how you count 23 - 24's stats.
In 2011 - 2012 there was only 1 trans man and no trans women. This is the only year there were more trans men than trans women. There were no nonbinary characters until 2018 - 2019.
Again! This is a TINY percentage of all queer characters (8%!) much less all characters on TV! This is not meant to say "trans women have more rep thus they have it better!" It's more to say "you are not being flooded by any amount of queer rep, much less trans rep! Do not let your confirmation bias and personal hurt cause you to lash out at your fellow trans and queer people!"
The idea that asexual people are incapable of consent because they don't experience sexual attraction really pisses me off for reasons I can't really articulate but probably boils down to "I am a grown adult, stop trying to police my activity."
not to say that i have no understanding at all for (straight) allies identifying with niche labels and feeling at home in the community but y'all would not believe how many nickels i'd have from both women and men for specifically the label "kinky poly-leaning panromantic (demi) heterosexual, cis but maybe also nonbinary" only to find a kinda alt, very very heterosexual virgin/late bloomer in their first relationship who is slightly at odds with gender roles. like this specific combination beats all odds. and it's always, oh, i'm sorry for assuming, ofc you're just as queer as me i shouldn't have assumed (*mentally edits life story talk to exclude bits of homophobia and blatant sexism they'll be annoyed at not understanding*)

learning that their are trans men and women fighting each other has been TERRIBLE for my mental health
I mean it when I say we have bigger fish to fry then which queer person experiences more hatred from the big issue that is modern day republicans
(hint: the real answer is that we both experience hatred and misogyny in ways that are both huge and hurtful whether currently or in the past, but in very different ways and to compare them is basically comparing apples and oranges. ALSO at the same time we do experience pain that is similar with our current political climate and the bills every country either has or is trying to put in place. they hurt both parties. This is a nuanced issue that fighting each other wont fix. )
"god this country sucks i wish i was born in- oh no nvm nvm theyre much worse"
