With narcolepsy, is it like a blackout thing where you kinda pass out, or a "exhaustion leading to needing more sleep/intermittent throughout the day hypersomnia" type thing?
This is a good question! Thanks for asking!
Typically people with narcolepsy don’t actually black out.
Narcolepsy is categorized as “Chronic daytime sleepiness” l
The way I describe it is that I always feel like I’ve been awake for 2 days straight without sleep. No matter how much sleep or rest I get.
Sometimes I have what’s called a Sleep Attack, where I get even more exhausted for a period of time. I’ll just be going about my business and suddenly I feel like I’ve been awake 5 busy days with no rest. I don’t black out, but I need to stop and rest or close my eyes.
I can fight through sleep attacks if I need to, but it’s hard and it’s not good for me and it feels like shit. When I fight through sleep attacks I get worse at functioning and sometimes start doing automatic behavior (finishing tasks on autopilot without really processing what’s happening). I’ve also found that I have trouble forming memories during sleep attacks, and when I’m fight through them. It’s not really worth fighting off a sleep attack because I can usually just take a small nap and be relatively fine after.
I have Type 2 Narcolepsy, but Type 1 Narcolepsy has a system called cataplexy which causes people to have a sudden loss of muscle control, but typically they are still awake and entirely conscious. I believe this is where people have gotten the misconception about narcoleptics blacking out from
Type 1 but this just represents us all so well! 🖤

An estimated 2.8 million people worldwide have multiple sclerosis (MS).
An estimated 2.8 million people worldwide have multiple sclerosis (MS). This autoimmune condition is the result of the immune system damaging parts of the nerves in the brain and spinal cord, which can lead to problems with movement, vision, balance and sensation. While many MS symptoms can be managed, there's currently no way to cure or prevent the condition. This is due to the complex immune response that leads to this disease. But a blood test recently developed by me and my colleagues has allowed us to estimate the strength of the immune response in people with MS. This finding may not only bring us one step closer to understanding the causes of MS, but to developing better treatments for the condition.

Life with Narcolepsy
being chronically ill is like having the (expected) health of a 70 year old at 20

Erythromelalgia is crazy like you're telling me I have MAN ON FIRE syndrome and I'm supposed to just walk around like that's not the most metal shit I've ever heard?
Shout out to disabled people who are, ya know, existing with symptoms - whatever they may be. Who are exhausted/fatigued some (or all) days. Who are in pain. Who live in a world that doesn’t understand them, a world that isn’t built for them.
I hope you have the time to cuddle your favorite stuffed animal. I hope you watch an amazing episode of your favorite show. I hope you meet a doctor that smiles and sees you and works with you. Much love to you all.
Moment of silence for all the heat sensitive disabled ppl as the world actively tries to kill us this summer
