i think i've finally put my finger on exactly why it's been giving me such an ick seeing all of this fan culture in the media recently. it's because having all of these intimate inside fan culture information on display for everyone to see is actually commodifying the act of being a fangirl. it's turning something so pure and genuine into something a corporation can milk for profit. once you see a headline on. news article using the word 'omegaverse' you're introducing that part of fangirlism to bodies that intentionally seeking out new demographic to mine and squeeze and optimize. you're exposing something that was born organically from a simple desire to celebrate joy to a frontier that froths at the mouth to discover new ways they can occupy your space and time and money.

this concept of 'being a fangirl' as something to strive towards is incredibly new in the marketplace. like, it has to be since 2020 that it became such a public and widespread conversation topic that is actively being talked about in the news as some new lucrative market that has yet to be tapped into. it did not used to be like this!!!!! being a fangirl was actively looked down upon and sequestered away into their designated corners of the world. when fangirls were talked about in the press it was usually deragatory or talked about as some kind of baffling enigma. we had JUST gotten to the point in 2014 where it was considered 'cool' to be a geek or a nerd.

now you have celebrities reading about fanfiction and articles discussing ao3 and red carpets discussing what their favorite trope is. it's all a fucking pipeline to get to the highest amount of clicks and profit and relevancy as quick as possible which in turn imo is making new gen fangirls not explore and grow into the culture like the rest of did. now they're finding out about ao3 through tiktok and asking for people to find them fics to read because they don't know how to use the tagging system and they just want to get the best fics as soon as possible. do you see what i mean. introducing such an inner world to the outside world has warped it and it makes me very scared indeed.
