Category 10 forestry event . I found a tree at work that no one in the forestry department can ID like we can’t even get it down to a Genus. If we had to guess we’d say Fraxinus (Ash) but THE LEAVES ARE WRONG (not compound, and no it’s not Fraxinus anomola) ……………..

Like this is an entire crew of people whose job is basically identifying trees without effort and we’ve been at this for a week and we have no leads. Yes it’s fun but if we can’t get this nailed down soon we may actually be a danger to ourselves

Oh my godddd . Ok we were right it is an ash but it’s some weird cultivar of the European Ash (Fraxinus excelsior ‘diversifolia’).

Why an extremely rare cultivar of this tree that is pretty much only sold in the UK* is on a parkway in Chicago I don’t know but that was certainly a journey.

*correction: it appears that about 20-30 years ago a small sample of this cultivar was sold to a number of municipalities around Chicago and have been confusing local arborists ever since.
