They are past tense emotionally married, currently divorced to me (hence the exes, not romantic, not dating but married, in some kind of relationship lol).
I can see these two as becoming the sort of very close, emotionally dependant 'platonic' friends that starts based on initial similarities, then the lines blur on and on until one of them acknowledges it and then it disintegrates completely based on fundamental differences.
I always love the dynamic of city mouse/country mouse, I love the dynamic of 'loyalty/family is everything' characters colliding and collapsing when you factor in their core groups not blending well together, and with these two specifically, I love the vibe of two very emotional and empathetic characters who buckle under pressure in very different ways.
I love that Art is languid and casual and strangely insightful but flips a switch to viciously angry when he's met with hostility or sees something he views as unjust, I love that Collie uses rigidity to cover his own softness and emotions just bubbles out of him when he's distraught and worked up. They're both sensitive and seek companionship, but they go about it in very different ways - Art gels easily and early, Collie closes off his own nature to protect himself. I'm sooo blurry eyes emoji imagining how this would present itself and unfold as a ship.
I think these two would chill hard 90% of the time and find themselves at complete odds in high stakes emotional situations. There's a 50/50 they would either latch on to each other in a very unhealthy way, and a 50/50 that they would just explode and things would be completely irreparable in a delicious sort of angsty way.
