Hello thank you for answering my ask! I have a follow up question: what do you think Andrew’s bad days would look like as a SAHD and freelancer? How does his family assuming they have kids, take care of him?
Hmm that’s a good question! It’s tough since we don’t really know what his diagnosis is and the show is wildly inconsistent on it. I do think we can assume at minimum he’ll have times of depression, as well as times of sensory overwhelm. Probably bouts of insomnia. They also lean even more into an OCD indication in the later seasons.
I like to think about his life with Amy and Chris (and any other kids) as one where he’s taking some steps to address his mental health. Maybe he wouldn't do it just for himself, but to take care of his new family? I do think that would be a push to, if nothing else, get on appropriately prescribed and monitored meds (i.e. by a doctor and not by his self-serving demon bitch of a mother). We’ve seen the lengths he’ll go to to make sure Lena is cared for.
He would benefit massively from therapy/counseling too of course but that could be more of a stretch for him. Though with Amy’s encouragement, who knows? I’m sure she’s in counseling to work on her own struggles (and it would be required for her as part of getting custody of Chris back).
There’s something very special to me about the idea of Andrew getting to build the life he wants despite his mental health issues and his upbringing—all those ways Smurf hindered his development and ability to form much sense of self, all the trauma and abuse that he experienced and witnessed. There will be road bumps and difficulties and nothing is perfect, but people with many kinds of mental illness can still have happy, “normal” lives.
Smurf and the brothers rarely help him for his sake—Andrew’s issues are an inconvenience or a joke or a useful tool when they need it. So for him, the seemingly simple change of having a support system is huge. As many people with mental illness know, family and friends can’t just love you into being “cured”. But having those people firmly in your corner? People who you can really trust, who encourage you to take care of yourself, who assure you they love you on your bad days as much as they do on your good ones? Life-changing.
When it comes to his family caring for him, I think that it takes the form of mutual care and Amy reframing it for him as "taking time to look after yourself is taking care of me and our family."
He and Amy work together to have things in place so that if he’s struggling, their lives can still run smoothly. And it works both ways—she has her own issues, and everyone needs breaks.
Andrew thrives with structure and routine, so he meal-preps to make sure there's always easy options for them even if he's down for the count. He has a cleaning and house maintenance schedule so that everyone knows what gets completed when. Bills are on auto-pay. Whatever his job ends up being he pads the completion estimate on each project so that he has plenty of time even if there is a stretch of days he can't work.
We don't know much about Amy's family but if Andrew and Amy do have a baby then maybe her mom and/or dad are on deck to come if Andrew needs help once Amy goes back to work. They have a nanny or babysitter in the wings if Amy's parents can't make it or if they need someone to pick Chris up from school or get him to any activities. There's a daycare or playgroup at church the kids can go to.
Amy is very social and outgoing and likes forming relationships with people. That isn't a strength of Andrew's, but through her they have a great network of friends and church members happy to help them out. (Her ability to draw people in helps Andrew form relationships too—we've seen that people do like him once he gets a foot in the door. He’s never going to be wildly social but just a sense of familiarity and feeling like people are happy to see him would be so nice for him.)
They’re honest with the kids about Andrew’s situation, in age-appropriate ways. So it may be simple explanations and reminders that “sometimes Daddy doesn’t sleep well so he’ll need to rest during the day” and things like crafts and puzzles and other quiet activities they do together on Special Days which are the ones when he can't handle a lot of noise or input. The kids are comfortable with the fact that Daddy can get really quiet sometimes because that’s their normal—he still gives really good cuddles on those days anyway. Kids are chaotic so it's not always going to be smooth or simple, but they manage.
And when it happens that Andrew can’t go to Chris’ first baseball game of the season, Amy knows Chris is disappointed. But she makes sure to note the fact that Dad packed his snack (Chris’ favorite, stubbornly made in the short stretch Andrew had that day when the insomnia-induced migraine let up just enough for him to function). She reminds him that Dad cleaned and conditioned Chris’ glove a couple days ago because the leather was starting to dry out and Andrew wanted it to be in perfect condition for his boy. She reminds him that Dad promised Chris they’ll go out for ice cream when Chris’ team wins their first game.
It doesn’t mean Chris isn’t disappointed Andrew’s not there, and Amy isn’t telling him not to be. But even though there are times of disappointment, those are only moments. Andrew is at every game he can be. The ones he can’t, Amy makes sure that she videos as much as possible so that Chris can regale his dad with the highlights as soon as Andrew’s up to it again. Chris never questions that his dad loves him and is interested in the things that matter to him.
